Dear groovers, on ‘Merengue’, a sub-label of Discos
Fuentes we find this old record with both José Maria
Peñaranda and Calixto Ochoa y sus Conjuntos. The
first is well known for his parrandas with naughty
lyrics, but he also did vallenatos and other genres.
On this 1963, according to Discogs his first album,
we find twelve songs in various styles. A rare
slice on the old yellow Fuentes label ..

Beste groovers, op ‘Merengue’, een sub-label van Discos
Fuentes vinden we vandaag deze oude plaat met zowel
José Maria Peñaranda als Calixto Ochoa en hun beider
Conjuntos. De eerste is bekend om zijn parranda’s met
ondeugende teksten, maar hij deed ook vallenato en
andere stijlen. Op dit album uit 1963, volgens Discogs
zijn eerste, vinden we twaalf nummers in verschillende
smaken. Een zeldzame schijf op het oude
gele Fuentes label ..

Isaac Carillo

Side one is just with Nicolás ‘Colacho’ Mendoza and his
Conjunto Vallenato on this album with Isaac Carillo. We
found Isaac Carillo in July 2019 on the album with Los
Playoneros del Cesar from 1969. He was one of the
members of the early formation. Isaac appears here on
the b-side of this record, he also performs with Colacho
Mendoza and his Conjunto Vallenato. Vallenato from
around 1970 I assume, no year of release was found.

Voor de liefhebbers van vallenato hebben we vandaag deze
plaat met twee groten uit het veld. Kant één is alleen met Nicolás
‘Colacho’ Mendoza en zijn Conjunto Vallenato. Op kant twee
vinden we Isaac Carillo die ook met Colacho en zijn band optreedt.
We vonden Isaac Carillo al op een plaat met Los Playoneros del
Cesar in juli 2019. Hij was een van de oude bandleden van die
groep. Dit is vallenato van rond 1970 veronderstel ik,
een jaar van uitgifte is niet bekend. Luister zelf ..

Hij opent met de titlel song, een sterke cumbia met de naam ‘Pajaro
Sinsonte’. Abel Antonio Villa was een meester op zijn vakgebied, zijn
muziek bruist van kwaliteit. Helaas is de kwaliteit van de plaat niet
hoe we die zouden willen. Desondanks wilde ik hem je niet ont-

Today we find another album with Colombian band leader
Pedro Laza. It is one made in 1968 and with ‘Su Banda’.
The tracks are mostly instrumental renditions of well
known songs. Pedro laza has been active from 1937
to 1980. Carnavalesque Band Sound
with bombardon or sousaphone.

Vandaag vinden we nog een plaat met Colombiaanse
band leider Pedro Laza. Dit is er een met ‘Su Banda’.
Voornamelijk instrumentale uitvoeringen van een
aantal bekende songs. Pedro Laza was actief van

Pedro Laza was born in Cartagena in 1904. In 1932 he began his first
group, the Bolivar Student Band. When jazz became popular he started
to play the double bass. A new ensemble called Orquesta Nueva Granada
was the next step. In those days the professional relation with Antonio
Fuentes took place. The first records were made in 1937. Laza comes on
the payroll of Orquesta Emisora Fuentes and works as bassplayer and
arranger. In 1952 he begins his group Sonora Pelayera which later
changes in Pedro Laza y sus Pelayeros. It is to honour the town San
Pelayo where ‘Porro’ first appeared. Great exponents of the style
were Climaco Sarmiento, Lalo Orozco and Rufo Garrido amongst
others, but none of them were from San Pelayo. Pedro Laza
recorded over 30 albums with Toño Fuentes in his life. In 1960
he became part of La Sonora Dinamita a group founded by Toño
Fuentes. His music stands symbol for the rise of Colombian
record industry. Pedro laza died on the 4th of April 1980
in his birthground Cartagena de Indias ..

Pedro Laza werd geboren in Cartagena in 1904. In 1932 begon hij zijn
eerste groep, de Bolivar Studenten Band. Toen jazz populair werd ging
hij contrabas spelen. Een nieuw ensemble genaamd Orquesta Nueva
Granada was het gevolg. In die dagen begon ook zijn professionele relatie
met Antonio Fuentes. De eerste platen werden gemaakt in 1937. Laza komt
op de loonlijst van Orquesta Emisora Fuentes en werkt als bassist en arran-
geur. In 1952 begint hij zijn groep Sonora Pelayera welke later verandert
in Pedro Laza y sus Pelayeros. Hij eert daarmee de plaats San Pelayo waar
de ‘Porro’ vandaan komt. Grote exponenten van de porro waren o.a. Rufo Garrido,
Lalo Orozco en Climaco Sarmiento, maar geen van hen komt uit
San Pelayo. Pedro Laza nam meer dan 30 platen op met Toño Fuentes.
In 1960 maakte hij deel uit van La Sonora Dinamita, een groep opgericht
door zakenman Toño Fuentes. Pedro Laza’s muziek staat symbool voor
de opkomst van de Colombiaanse platen industrie. Hij overleed
op 4 April 1980 in zijn geboorte land Cartagena de Indias ..

As you know I’m a sucker for good vallenato. Every once in
a while an artist is posted which you didn’t see here yet.
Today’s turn is Oscar Negrete who became winner in one
of the first Festivals de Leyenda Vallenata in the children’s
category. As an adolescent he pulled that stunt once again.
In 1975 he teamed up with singer Adalberto Ariño and
made this album. Listen and make up your mind ..

Zoals je weet ben ik dol op een knap stukje vallenato. Eens
in de zoveel tijd posten we een artiest die hier nog niet eerder
verscheen. Vandaag valt de beurt aan Oscar Negrete die in één
van de eerste Festivals de la Leyenda Vallenata winnaar werd in
de kids categorie en dit nog eens deed in zijn puberteit. In
1975 maakte hij met zanger Adalberto Ariño deze plaat.

Chupando Exitos – Various Artists

On Colombian record label Discos Fuentes we find this great
collection of songs. All artists presented are from Colombia
except for one. Celia Cruz is the strange exception on this
album that mostly has vallenato tracks. No idea why Disco
Fuentes decided to add ‘Quede Zaina’ on which Celia Cruz
appears with Cuban orchestra La Sonora Matancera. One
way or the other, we find Pacho Rada, his son Pachito,
Alejandro Durán, Juan Polo Valencia and even Victor
Salamanca, wonderful ..

Op het Colombiaanse label Discos Fuentes vinden we deze
mooie verzameling songs. Alle artiesten komen uit Colombia,
op eentje na. Celia Cruz is de ietwat vreemde uitzondering op
deze collector die voornamelijk vallenato bevat. Geen idee
waarom Discos Fuentes besloot ‘Quede Zaina’ erop te zetten
waarop Celia Cruz met La Sonora Matancera verschijnt. Hoe
dan ook, we vinden Pacho Rada, zijn zoon Pachito, Alejandro
Durán, Juan Polo Valencia en zelfs Victor
Salamanca, prachtig toch ..

Alberto Pacheco, geboren in Barranquilla, vestigde zich
in Valledupar waar zijn muzikale carrière zich ontvouwde.
Hij leerde accordeon spelen van José maria Peñaranda.
Alberto werd de winnaar van het 4de Festival de la Leyenda
Vallenata in 1971. Tweede was toen ‘el Pollo Vallenata’,
Luis Enrique Martinez. De jury bestond uit José Barros,
Alejo Durán en Antonio maria Peñaloza. Vooral pijnlijk
was het voor Luis Enrique Martinez wiens vriend Alejo Durán
tegen hem stemde. Dit is een tribuut album uit 1983, vlak
na zijn dood. Alberto Pacheco oveleed aan een hart infarct ..

Alberto Pacheco, born in Barranquilla, settled in Valledupar
where his musical career unfolded. He was taught to play
accordion by José maria Peñaranda. Alberto was chosen King
Vallenato on the 4th Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata in 1971.
Second was ‘el Pollo Vallenato’, Luis Enrique Martinez. The
panel of judges existed from José Barros, Alejo Durán
and Antonio Maria Peñaloza. It was especially embarrassing
for Luis Enrique Martinez who’s friend Alejo Durán chose
Alberto Pacheco over him. This is a tribute album from
1983, just after his death. He was struck by heart infarct ..

Plutarco Urrutia y su Conjunto

It was back in 2011 when I discovered the works of Plutarco
Urrutia. The first song I heard was ‘Esperando a Patricia’, to be
heard on my Colompilation no. 5. Later in 2014 we had his ’79
album ‘La Manguita’. Today we find this record from 1978
called ‘La Hamaca Vacia’. In 2020 we saw this title on an
elpee which he did together with Pachito Rada, the song was
quite different however. I’m always excited about the strong
Colombian rhythms, listen ..

Ik ontdekte Plutarco Urrutia voor het eerst in 2011 met het
nummer ‘Esperando a Patricia’. Het staat op mijn Colompilation
no. 5. Later in 2014 hadden we het album ‘La Manguita ‘ uit
1979. Vandaag vinden we deze plaat uit 1978 met de titel
‘La Hamaca Vacia’, deze songtitel vonden we ook al op de elpee
die hij samen met Pachito Rada maakte, gepost in 2020. Deze
versie is echter totaal anders dan degene die we hier horen.
Ik ben gek op de krachtige Colombiaanse ritmes, luister ..

El Combo Bonito appeared with different frontmen during their
active period, 50’s and 60’s. On this ‘Cositas Colombianos vol. III’
it was Ramón Ropain. The album displays various styles such as
pompo, cumbia, paseo, mecedor, porro guapachá, cumbiamba,
cumbia go-gó and porro charanga. This one is from 1967 ..

Tijdens hun actieve priode, 50’s en 60’s, verscheen el Combo
Bonito met diverse ‘frontmen’. Op dit album uit 1967 is dat
Ramón Ropain. Diverse stijlen komen aan bod zoals pompo, cumbia,
paseo, mecedor, porro guapachá, cumbiamba, cumbia go-gó en porro
charanga. Op Sello Vergara uit Bogotá ..

Until the present day we only had some five of his records.
About time to post a couple from the pile Alfredo Gutierrez
albums we have on the shelf. This is an elpee from 1980 on
which we find ten songs credited to Alfredo. He didn’t write
all of them and doesn’t sing on all of them so I guess he plays
on all of them. One way or the other, these are 10 wonderful
tracks. Dated 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1968, absolute killers ..

Tot de dag van vandaag hadden we er slechts zo’n vijf van hem.
Hoog tijd om er nog een paar te posten van de stapel Alfredo
Gutierrez platen die op de plank staat. Dit is een album uit 1980
waarop we tien songs vinden die op zijn naam staan. Hij schreef
ze niet allemaal en hij zingt niet op allemaal, ik ga ervan uit dat
hij ze allemaal speelt. Hoe dan ook, dit zijn 10 heel sterke
nummers. Gedateerd 1965, 1966, 1967 en 1968,
stuk voor stuk killers ..
