Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey and hisInternational Brothers Band – in London, vol.3,Decca West Africa 1972

Ebenezer Obey, front

Hello groovers, there’s something I wish to tell you for
some time now and today seems a fine day to do so.
I am a non-religious person. I know this is a strange
phenomena for some people but in our country I think
more than half of the population is. Money and religion
are the two biggest causes of war in the world and for
one, that’s a huge reason to be like I am, without religion.
In the music that I post, maybe more often than I realize,
religious utterances are made. I wish to keep aloof from
this. It’s the music that I love to hear, often I don’t even
understand the words but that’s okay with me. The
‘groove’ is the most important thing and also the
reason for posting an album. If you think I am a bad
person, that’s also fine with me, I know I’m not and stick
to my feeling about this. So if Chief Commander Ebenezer
Obey speaks of religious things, those are his words,
not mine. Okay, I’m glad I made this clear, I am not
open for discussion but just wanted to make this
statement. Still, hope U like and enjoy.
Peace, love, happiness and health to all !

Of course, some religious endeavors can result in some mighty fine artifacts –
    like this one for instance.

Music and dance is the gateway to happiness! Positivity must be spread around the world like jelly on toast and YOU are a pioneer.

Religious or not the music that you’ve posted has gotten me through some rough times and I thank you for that. Keep it up, the world loves you!

Ahhh. If only I could say the same thing about 50% of my country….60%…80%…90% even…leave 10% in the name of pluralism. But, like you, I’ve had to make subtle justifications to align my atheism (or whatever you want to call it) with my love of religious music. American Gospel music is incredible, AND I understand all the words….Do I believe in the “kingdom of Heaven?”….HELL no! But damn, I love Gospel music..
(all above puns with intended) ;-).
    Thanks for this amazing blog!

It’s funny how religion can be a brutal institution, yet faith and spirit can be such vital and inspiring elements in the creation of art, music, society and culture. It’s an ugly balancing act between the creative urge of the spirit and the Apollinian dominion or the social order. Religion kills many people even without a single bullet being fired. How many have died from HIV/AIDS and other STI after being told that condoms are a blaspheme. Senseless ephemeral death wishes by those in power according to a doctrine that describes transcendence and love. Hard pill to swallow. Thanks for your words, and of course for the music you are showing all of us.

You have great taste and I love what you post – and I can understand why you wanted to say what you have said about religion and religious beliefs.

I think that the love of music is what is important here – and respect for the cultures (and beliefs) of others.

I do believe it is possible for faith to be a good thing… but it can be hard to see – and understand – how that can be when so many of us human beings use it for our own ends. (Which ends up in people being hurt and oppressed.)

Either way, I like the music here – please keep it coming! (And thanks you for the link to my blog.)

    all the best,
