Search: oliver de coque – Page 1

Good morning groovers, today I dug up this album with Oliver de Coque from Nigeria. He must have been the 'best dressed chicken in town' in his hometown. If you look at the sleeves no explaining is necessary. Oliver may not have been the most gifted singer, but his sound and certainly his appearance were[...]

Post: Oliver de Coque and his Expo ’76
in the U.S.A. , Nke Nakpa Onye

It has been over nine years since we had us an album with Oliver de Coque and his Expo '76 Ogene Sound Super of Africa. Today he returns here at the Global Groove in this last week of 2020. His real name was Oliver Sunday Akanite, he made some 93 records. de Coque was taught[...]

Want another LP of Nigerian highlife ? Oliver de Coque is not the world's greatest singer but his music has a groove I absolutely dig. That much said, it would deserve at least a couple of spins, two Mp3's of a tiny 20 minutes each, give it a go.. tracks; 1 Atutu gepu mpi ekwe[...]

It's been a while since we had us some Nigerian highlife. It has also been a while since we had us an album by the excentric Oliver de Coque. He always looks quite special, original, like no other. This 1981 LP sounds as good as it was recorded yesterday, fresh rhythms and guitars and of[...]

From 1979 is this one by the great looking Oliver de Coque. I love the background vocals on this LP and the stacato guitars in track #3. It was requested by Alexsam and I was so lucky to have it. Now everybody's happy, you, he and me too, enjoy it. tracks; 1 People's Club of[...]

Oliver de Coque was a master in appearing exentric on his covers. How do you like this 1980 version of his majesty, complete with feather- duster and crown, shining like a new crowned king. Even the textual lay-out is totally cool, I just love these covers. And then the music of course is about his[...]

We have seen a few Oliver de Coque's before at the GG but today's LP has something different. I don't know how but this one sounds somehow more original. And a funny thing is the fact that his band is called Expo 79 on this LP, while on all other albums it's called Expo 76.[...]

Good afternoon groovers worldwide, summer is now really coming to an end in the Netherlands. It was long and sunny but autumn is breaking through. To keep that warm feeling, we learned a couple of tricks like playing tropical musictypes. Today's choice is an album by Nigerian hero, Oliver de Coque. One of the last[...]

Ogene Sound Super of Africa
Engirigbo, Afrodisia / Ogene 1987Let's have us a little more Highlife from Nigeria. Igbo Highlife that is with the great Oliver de Coque. I especially like the harmony's on this album, blended with Oliver's Congo style guitar, another Nigerian killer. Sorry for the many crackles and snaps. tracks; 1 Engirigbo 2 Ife gadi nma na Nigeria 3 Klub nationale[...]

Always great covers on Oliver de Coque's LP's. Like this album from 1982, it is a bit worn out but spins like it should. tracks; 1 Ekwueme youth club of Nigeria - Ndi amama nenuwa 2 Onye aghana nwanne ya - Onye nwelumadu nuwa kene chukwu

When I find another Oliver de Coque I always get exited, if it's his exentric way of dressing, the covers are always great. Or the uncomplicated highlife, interlarded with Congolese style guitars, it thrills me playing this stuff time after time. Listen to this gentleman, listen to Oliver de Coque ! tracks; 1 Anyi cholu[...]

The always exentric Oliver de Coque started out in 1976, with this LP if I'm correct. He was one of the first to use Congolese guitarstyle in Nigerian Highlife. I posted a couple of his albums last year, check the highlife section on this page. ( below on the left ) here's one to start[...]

Oliver de Coque was a prolific guitarist who popularised the 'Ogene' dance, an inspiring style of Nigerian High Life. Oliver Sunday Akanite was born in 1947 and started his music career at the age of 11. He played on the Prince Nico Mbarga's evergreen album "Sweet Mother" and recorded himself more than 70 albums that[...]
