Syl Johnson – Diamond in the Rough, Hi 1974

Syl Johnson, front

To increase the variety today, we’ll have us a soul album.
This is Syl Johnson, one of the biggest stars at the ‘Hi-stable’.
Like most albums at ‘Hi’, it is produced by Willie Mitchell,
the man who made Al Green sign up at Hi. He produced Green’s
best work. The sound of this album is typical for Hi records
of this era. Another big star at Hi was ofcourse ‘Ann Peebles’,
we’ll see her back later. Now it’s time for the raw soul of
our man Syl Johnson, get down to it !

tracks;

1 Let yourself go
2 Don’t do it
3 I want to take you home ( to see mama )
4 Could I be falling in love
5 Stuck in Chicago
6 Diamond in the rough
7 Keeping down confusion
8 Please, don’t give up on me
9 Music to my ears
10 I hear the love chimes

  1. This album is killer, man! I especially love that piano intro to “Let yourself go.” The only Syl Johnson record I know is his take of “Take me to the river.” I’ll definitely need to check out more of his stuff.

    Many thanks,

  3. Regarding Ann Peebles, Moos, I still think the best bang I ever got for my musical buck was a Ann Peebles “Greatest Hits” cassette I purchased for 99 cents in a Woolworth’s just before it went out of business in Newark, New Jersey. Played that tape it to death. My only complaint about the songs on that tape, like “I pity the fool,” “99 lbs.,” “Tear you playhouse down,” is that they’re too short! Finally ripped the cassette to CD just last week. I’ve also been enjoying your Latin/Salsa posts, especially the Johnny Pacheco albums. Today’s salsa just don’t swing like Johnny Pacheco’s.

    Thanks again,

    Hydrino

  5. Moos:
I am also a big fan of the Hi Records sound. I only own Syl’s “Is It Because I’m Black”, “Back For A Taste Of Your Love” & a greatest hits cd from his Twinight/Twilight records years so this album will be a welcome addition. Thanks
