Prince Nico Mbarga & Rocafil Jazz
Sweet Mother, AIT 1976

Prince Nico, front, cd size

Did you like Prince Nico Mbarga ?
This is a special album, the song ‘Sweet Mother’, how strange
this may seem, is the biggest African song of all time.
Not one other African song sold so many copies throughout
the world. It’s not that special on first hearing.
Prince Nico’s music in general however is great, I love it.
And how about you ?

tracks;

1 Sweet mother
2 Wayo inlaw
3 Aki special
4 Christiana

I don’t understand either what’s the big deal with “Sweet Mother”, but “Aki Special” is one of my favorite songs ever.
More generally… thanks for spoiling us SO MUCH :)

My favorite is “Christiana,” but this guy’s great all around. Never heard of him before, so thanks for spreading the goodness.

Nico Mbarga was bigger than any Western star, one thing, he was a star in the poor part of the earth. I can still remember Sweet Mother in Liberia, When I was just about 4 years. I travelled to Vietnam in 2003 and Australia in 2005. I heard Sweet being play on birth party and graduation in Vietnam. Eventhough, the people cannot understand the language in the music. He was really gifted. By putting pigen english together and love by the whole world. I need a little history about Nico mbarga, his birth place, early years in music. Father’s and Mother’s name

A great star indeed he was, we African have to learned to tell and brand our own story. If we allow other people to tell our story for us, they will cherry pick, and tell it the way the see it and it will not be well narrated. Prince Nico Mbarga was more than only a Nigerian-Cameroonian born STAR.
Sweet Mother sold more copies than the Beetle’s I Want To Hold Your Hand. By the end of 1976, Sweet Mother had 13.8 million copies sold. I read this in BBC archive. If He was recording for audience in America, Europe or Australia, today his royalty would be in billions. Up to today’s date, Sweet Mother is widely play in Columbia, New Zealand, Brazil and other pats of the, more than years after its release date.
