Les Shleu Shleu
1975

At last,…news from Haiti. It’s been a while but this one
is here to stay. I am not listening to ‘compas’ very long yet
but from the few LP’s I’ve heard, this is absolutely one of the
best. It contains some of their most played tracks; Devin ‘pa’ ou,
Ce la ou yé and L’evangile to call a few. This one’s for you Arnaud.

tracks;

1 Ce la ou yé
2 Haiti & Shleu Shleu
3 Devin ‘pa’ ou
4 Sept jours de la semaine
5 Ceremonie Loa
6 L’evangile
7 Plaisir vacance
8 Reve
9 Trois forces

Thanks Moos! The weather man’s calling for 12″ of snow tomorrow, and frigid temps to follow. This’ll help to keep the house warm!

    More awesome stuff.
I’m going back and getting all the older compas now. Similar guitar ascetic to High life or Congolese, but an undeniable island feel.
    thanks for your amazing blog!

oops, nevermind. it is a (probably temporary) problem with mediafire’s own site, the link is likely fine.

you don’t have to approve either of my comments now lol.

    once again, great blog!

I have the CD from; it looks like a bootloeg.

Songs 1 – 4 are from their album “Cé la ou yé” in 1970. Tune 5 is from 1969 from the album “Grille ta cigarette”. Songs 6 – 9 from their “Shleu Shleu á New York” from 1975.

You can hear the sound between these songs is different.

Track 6 “L’evangile” was rercorded by Colombia’s Wganda Kenya as “El Evangelio.” It’s interesting that you posted an lp by Fruko since Wganda Kenya was formed by him. In fact, the Colombians covered numerous Haitian songs.

    Thanks,

Moos, for some reason I’ve not been able to DL the file. I only get an MF message saying that “there are currently no free servers available with the required data on them. Please try again in few minutes”. It’s been like that for three days now. All the other posts are OK. Can you do something?

I can corroborate what Goofy said. I have been unable to download the Les Shleu Shleu album and get the same error message from MediaFire. I’m still able to download the other things you’ve posted, so the problem seems to be specifically with the Les Shleu Shleu album.

Like you, I only recently stumbled upon Compas and stuff. Pretty addictive.

While posting another Shleu Shleu album today, and browsing around for info on the band, I found yours here. Thanks! If you haven’t got Haiti terre de soleil yet, take a look at

wOw, now it’s getting interesting. This foto there has a better quality but it has no corners. The original must come from another place…

The cd I have contains nothing about the recordings and production, just a dutch “stemra” number on the disc and for dutch prices it was cheap when I bought it.

    JeanLuc,

You must be looking at a re-issue.
The original release of “Ritual” has the same shot in full color.

I do seem to remember seeing more images from the same photo shoot somewhere…but it escapes me at the moment where that was.

ow yeah, Shleu Shleu is absolutely fantastic. Had this one on vinyl first, and yeah, bought the CD later on…
never tired of listening to them. Great rhythms. Lifts the spirits right away. Who needs anti-depressants if you can listen to music like this?
