Moses Kwaku Oppong, the leader of Kakaiku’s Guitar Band,
was born in 1916 in Acra. He quitt elementary school aged
fourteen just to be able to play his guitar. The Nigerian tenant
that worked at his parent’s house used to shout at him; ‘Kai ku’
meaning; ‘look here’ or ‘hi Kwaku’, this became his nickname.
He worked as blacksmith, winch greaser and driver of engines
at Aboso Gold Mines and played his guitar at parties, wake-
keepings and funerals. He named his band after his childhood
nickname and made over 500 records, an enormous amount.

I suspect the wierd cover art refers to the famous folk tales of the Ashanti tribe of Ghana which feature Anansi the Spider also known as Kwaku Anansi.

hi Moos, the album tittle is “san ko da wa menam” which means “go back to sleep in your grave”….and the sleeve shows a mouse and a spider overlooking the lion in his grave, with “osebo” engraved on the tombstone, which means “lion”…the spider is considered a wise or cunning creature in the ghanaian society and I identified him by the web on the head…. nice piece of artwork….thanks for this rare album

Hi Moos. The story of this sleeve is the track 7-“Wonfa bone ntua ka”. The story is that: One day, a mouse found a panther (Osebo)prisoner into a hole. The panther begged the mouse to help him come out. And the mouse did it. Then the panther said: now I must kill you. If not, you will tell everybody that you have help me. The mouse was afraid and began crying. The spider passing by asked why the mouse was crying and got the explanation. The spider was so surprised that a small mouse has come out this big panther. So the spider asked the panther to go back down the sleeve to see how this has been possible. When the panther went back into the hole, the spider told him to come out by his own means as he cannot give death as a reward to someone who has been good for you. Sorry for my poor English. Merci beaucoup.
