Calypso Cavalcade vol. I – Various Artists
Sounds of the Caribbean SLP 731, 1974
This is part one from a series of three albums with classic calypso
songs. It has been posted by others in the past but they are worth
being here once more. It opens with a song by the Sparrow which
I heard first on Van Dyke Parks ‘Discover America’ without knowing
what I was listening to. Meantime this is history, listen..
BTW, you can find Van Dyke Parks here as well.
jaren wijzer. Je vindt Van Dyke Parks hier ook..

This is a great compilation for showing the overlapping of the generations. It has some of the later better recordings of the older guard like Lion and Beginner (whose career was mostly pre-war), some of those who were popular in the late 40s and 50s like Melody and Terror, and then Sparrow who was just getting started and would be a force in Calypso over the decades to come.
Melody as always is my favourite.
