Sly and the Family Stone – Stand!
Epic 1969
After yesterday’s comment by El Profe I decided to end
the Willie Colon row of posts. It is time for something
quite different. I just learned about a marvelous docu-
mentary. It is called ‘Summer of Soul’. In 1969 there were
a couple of festivals in the New York area of which this
one was almost forgotten. Everybody knows about the
‘Summer of Love’ referring to Woodstock of course.
Same time there was the ‘Harlem Cultural Festival’
known as ‘Black Woodstock’. It was spread over 6
weekends and had a range of black artists; Nina Simone,
B.B. King, Sly and the Family Stone, Chuck Jackson, Abbey
Lincoln & Max Roach, the 5th Dimension, Gladys Knight &
the Pips, Stevie Wonder, Mahalia Jackson and Moms Mabley
among many others. I thought it would be appropriate to
post an album with Sly and the Family Stone from earlier
that same year. As from today the film ‘Summer of Soul’
is shown on Disney Channel, go there and enjoy ..
na het commentaar van El Profe gisteren heb ik besloten
de reeks Willie Colon posts te beëindigen. Het is tijd voor
iets totaal anders. Zojuist ontdekte ik dat er een prachtige
documentaire bestaat genaamd ‘Summer of Soul’. In 1969
Simone, B.B. King, Sly and the Family Stone, Chuck Jackson,
Abbey Lincoln & Max Roach, the 5th Dimension, Gladys Knight
& the Pips, Stevie Wonder, Mahalia Jackson and Moms Mabley
en vele anderen. Het leek me toepasselijk een plaat van Sly and
the Family Stone te plaatsen van eerder dat zelfde jaar. Vanaf
vandaag is ‘Summer of Soul’ te zien op
Disney Channel, Ga zeker kijken ..

Thanks for this one and all the other amazing albums lately. My collection is seriously growing and a new external storage needs to be bought soon. If you have anything from George Clinton`s Parliament, kindly share this too. All the best, Pete
Summer of Soul is a GREAT film with amazing performances. A terrible shame – a crime really – that the footage was ignored by the “powers that be” in the mainstream media for 50 years. But better late than never.
Blimey that looks amazing. Not sure I can see that unless it comes out on DVD though. Thanks Moos.
As an aside, I’ve long wondered what happened to the rest of the concert footage from the “Soul Power” gig in Zaire.
