Pedro Lima
Pedro Lima e as Relíquias do Passado
Sons d’Africa

Good morning groovers,
Something different today, do you remember our friend Jillem
and his great blog Holland Tunnel Dive ? Ever since his complete
archive got lost Jillem had to quit his works, such a shame. A lot
of music and the possibility to download also got lost. Today I’m
posting one of his files so you can still access it. I hope that’s
okay. Find Jillem’s notes below. Thank you for ever Jillem ..

The two Portuguese-speaking African islands of Sao Tomé & Principe,
located in the Gulf of Guinea, created an unique music called puxa :
refined mixture of various musical components from both sides of
the Atlantic ocean. A blend of semba, merengue, kompas, soukouss,
coladeira patterns, often pushing forward with a voodoo-like energy,
solid bass lines, delicate melodies and backing harmonies of the rich
Sao Tomean melodic traditions. Bringing together Sao Toméan puxa
and rumba with soukous guitar rhythms. born in 1944, Lima began his
career as a teenager with his family band Os Leonenses, and was active
until his death in 2019; Lima’s support for the revolutionary MLSTP party
earned him the title of ‘the People’s Voice of the Island’.
