Belly Steve & Les Soeurs Mariana, Mami’n’do

Belly Steve, front

Another very buisy day, so since I won’t have the time later,
an early posting.
It’s been some time ago I posted Congolese Soukous, need to make up.
Belly Steve comes in at Global Groove with a delightful album.
The fragile voices of les Soeurs Mariana added up, a great spin.

tracks;

1 Lu Buya
2 Tulante ya meinu
3 Seni samba
4 Yame yame

    I have had this same LP for many many years. I have always enjoyed it, but I know nothing about the artist.
    By the way, I would probably not call this a “soukous” record. I associate that word with the high speed sebene-only music that came out of Paris in the 80s. This LP is much more of a pure Congolese style and features the Orchestre Minzoto. Very nice record, very rarely seen.

    Thank you for enlightening me on that subject, I always wondered about the exact meaning of the word Soukous.
    I think I made a few more mistakes, considering this.
    How would you call this style ?

    I would simply call this Congolese rumba. It’s one of those early 1980s recordings that fused the styles of masters like Franco’s Orchestre TP OK Jazz and Tabu Ley’s Afrisa with those of some of the rising youth bands of the day.
    Other bands you may like in this vein are L’International Orchestre Rumbaya and Minzoto Wella-Wella.
    Or the one I featured here:
