Les Editions Vévé présentent
l’Orchestre Kamale & son Célèbre Chanteur
Nyboma ( Davos ), african 360.109, 1977

Orchestre Kamale, front

Good evening groovers, how are you today ? Welcome at the
Global. I have another sweet record on ‘african’ for you. It’s a
true beauty with the great Nyboma Mwan’dido doing the vocal
parts. Directed by Verckys and I think originally on Editions
Vévé. Nice picture of the two in wintercoats, I bet it wasn’t
taken in their tropical home country. How do you like
Nyboma’s Afro hairdo ? Isn’t that wild ? Great stuff.

tracks;

1 Ayindjo
2 Andoya
3 Abissina
4 Zaina mama

    Excellent music as usual, Moos. Thanks for posting. Nybomba’s hair-style is the “Afro” that for some reason was all the rage in 1977. East Africa’s Slim Ali of the “You Can Do It” used the Afro as a trade mark. I believe the craze came from our Afro-American brothers. Chic had made it very popular with their “Le Freak” golden success.
    As for the photo, it must be from some European album. Why in Africa would a man as young as Nyboma (then) need a scarf and a winter coat? Only if he was perfoming at the Altas or Drankensberg Mountains!

    Timothy & Moos, The reason why I say it may as well have been taken in the Tropics has a precedence. In my own country, the ‘fashion conscious’ wear winter coats in the heat of the coastal regions. From what I gather, the Congolese were even more fashion conscious than the Kenyan blokes, I wouldn’t put it past them…. :)

    @Ryder:

    You say “In my own country, the ‘fashion conscious’ wear winter coats in the heat of the coastal regions.”

    The people you describe are the very antithesis of fashion-consciousness. Wearing the wrong clothes in the wrong environment is NOT sign of fashion-consciousness. It is a clear indicator of the very opposite.

    Verckys is an icon of “finesse”, elegance and all things good. He can not be classified with the kind of people you describe. And he’d be the last to imitate anything just because it’s European (remember the message of “Nakomitunaka”).

    I don’t know which country you’re from but I’m Kenyan and I know that even the slightest cotton shirt will stick to your body in Mombasa. In Congo, things must be worse.

    Of course, there are warm coats in Kenya, the variety you can buy downtown Nairobi in places like ‘Colpro’. But these are anything but winter coats. The real ‘Loden’-style winter coat is so heavy that no one dares wear it in any other season. In Italy, it is virtually taboo to be seen in one until after November 2nd! And a good one can easily set your wallet back €1,000 (Kshs. 100,000), so where are the right minded Kenyans out there who will spend so much on an inappropriate coat, only to put it on in Mombasa! That would be news!

    Timothy,

    Point taken. My basis was that Verckys was generally outlandish in his costumes. And considering that Nyboma was of the generation that took the “Sapeur” insanity to its peak I couldn’t give a conclusive answer on where the the pic was taken.

    On wearing warm clothes in warm climates, it may be dumb, but what about this :)
