Verckys présente Empire Bakuba
La Belle Étoile
Editions Vévé International 1984

Empire Bakuba, front, cd size

Pépé Kallé was big in more than one way. Part from being a giant
in size, he was a great singer with a fantastic voice. This is a production
on Verckys’ Vévé label, with this team nothing can go wrong. The cover may
be a bit vague, the music certainly isn’t. Class A material
from Kinshasa, Zaïre. Enjoy ‘La Belle Étoile’.

tracks;

1 La belle étoile
2 Paralyse bis
3 Nunu tresort
4 Aziza

    Dear Moos,

Many thanks for sharing this album.

Frankly, I am disturbed by a loud non-musical sound (a horn?) that destroys each and every beautiful song on this album.

In the first song, the discordant sound starts at around 4’55” and just goes on to kill the fantastic sebene playing at the same time.

    Apurva from Pune, India.

I see what you mean Apurva, it annoyed me too. At first I thought it came from outside but it does belong in the music somehow. Strange people them musicians..

Maybe some nephew of somebody was given a chance to blow his horn: “c’mon dear, just blow it in time. . .” Quite rare discordancy in normally seamless Empire Bakuba productions; adds a unique element that can be endearing, or not.

    Thanks for another essential recording!

I actually like the horns. I’ve heard that there is another edition of this record that omits the blaring truck (?) horns in the sebenes. My copy includes them, though.

That’s Pepe defining animation. What a pity the animators (atalukus) nowadays think that their voices are more important than the music. Pepe Kalle is singing in animation mode!! Great artist… musician for musicians.. Great LP, the loud hornlike sound isn’t a problem for me.
Thanks a million… keep it up! Our music won’t die easily…
