    What a post
Definately one of the top rhumba orchestras from Congo, I love their music.
I am left wondering if gege yoka is the g.g yoka who lent his name to a tract by Franco?

    sincerely

    thanks for this!

i found the following little blurb after a quick search, maybe not news to you, but here goes:

“Thu-Zahina were one of the pivotal “youth” bands which brought American funk and acid rock influences into the already vibrant Kinshasha pop scene. With the expansive guitar work of Roxy Tshampaka, Thu-Zahina broke out of the tightly-arranged musical mould set by the older, established rumba bands led by Franco and Tabu Ley Rochereau. Later, bands such as Zaiko Langa Langa picked up this rock-influenced “new wave” and tightened the sound, re-establishing the dominance of intricate arrangements and precise musicianship in Congolese music. Here, though, the sound is new and still quite fluid, perhaps more expressive, if you’re inclined to think of it that way. (In fact, after Thu-Zahina helped Zaiko Langa Langa get its start, the younger band eclipsed them, and stole their famed guitar player…)”

    hope this helps!

Gary Stewart calls them a ye-ye band — one of the youth bands that preceded Zaiko, by streamlining the sound, adding electric bass and trap drums instead of congas and acoustic bass. He also mentions three of their guitarists: Jack Pela Nsimba who stayed in Paris, Thierry Mantuika who joined OK Jazz and Roxy Tshimpaka leader of Zaiko Langa Langa, later of Choc Stars.

Don’t worry if you don’t have much info on the personnel on this release. Your selection alone is compensation for that. They are good, and thanks for this introduction.

The excellent Thu-Zahina CD on RetroAfric shouldn’t be too hard to find?

Gege Yoka is definitely Gege Mang’aya who was one of the founders of Thu-Zahina, he was later poached by Franco & went on to play the rhythm guitar in more hits that Simarro in the late 70s & 80s. He left TPOK a disillusioned & bitter man vowing never to be involved in music again but was lured back into the business by Nyoka Longo. I think he is still with Zaiko Langa Langa Nkolo Mboka….
