Today’s album is a hell of a find but unfortunately it sounds like
nothing. The whole LP has a disturbing hiss and that is a real shame.
Normally I would not ask but, which one of you smart ol’ digital devils
is the first to give us back a link with a polished version ?
( part from that little rough start )
According to the online discography’s it’s the Star Band’s first album,
from the early seventies, great historic stuff that deserves a clean listen.
Thank you for being such help!tracks;

This LP by the great Youssou Ndour does not give us a single
word of information, we can only guess. Just name and titles are
displayed, and ‘Production-B.Diagne-Bruxelles.Youssou’s picture on
the front cover tells us he was still a youngster and the internet told
me it was released in 1982. If you can tell us who played on it
I would be very pleased. Enjoy Youssou Ndour et le Super Etoile.tracks;

If you take a look at our Senegal section ( below left ), you’ll
find that we have some albums by Super Diamono de Dakar. We also
have one by Super Jamano de Dakar. It seems to me, the band’s name
was first Super Jamano, then Super Jamono and finally Super Diamono.
Looking for the release date of this album on the web, I found that
most auction-sites claim it was 1984, one page said late seventy’s.
My instincts say 1979 or 1980, what do you think ?
Nice element on this LP is the use of harmonica, something I like
very much, highly original sound.
And that sweet voice, is that Omar Pene ?tracks;

After Youssou N’dour broke through European with ‘Bitim Rew Immigres’, I
decided to dig in to his past. Then I discovered Etoile de Dakar and Star
Band de Dakar. I had a kind of crush on this group, ever since the first
notes I laid my ears on. Absolutely great sound, so when I found this one
at the fair I was thrilled. Enjoy this lovely album and if you like it,
you can find more in the Afro-Cuban or Senegal section, below left.tracks;

West African sonero Laba Sosseh is here with a splendid album
from 1980. Together with the great Monguito he brings us some
son montuno African style. Produced by Aboudou Lassissi on the
Sacodis label from Abidjan. Best of both worlds I would say.tracks;

After another six months, it was finally time. Time for the Mega
Records and CD Fair in Utrecht. The one in april is okay, but the
one in november, wow, everybody took their best load of
merchandise and came over. Specially some French dealers brought
along rare stuff. Like this guy from *** Records in Le Havre.He showed me this;
Ouza’s music had a political load and was kind of radical.
He studied and was teacher and musician at the same time,
therefore he did not record many albums. I guess we are lucky
I found this one. It is a true beauty and I want to thank that
French dealer for bringing it to us.
Senegalese music at it’s best.tracks;

This casette is from 1988, a little jump through time today
with Youssou N”Dour et le Super Etoile de Dakar.
Number 14 out of 16 African casettes. Although the sound gets less
and less traditional and English phrases start blending in, I think
Youssou’s singing is outstanding on this tape. I love the way he bends
those high notes, what a great voice.tracks;

Second in line is Vol. 6, the line-up on this casette is different
from vol. 1. If any one can help us out here, we see Yamar Thiam
playing ‘Tama’ on vol. 1 and we see Assane Thiam playing ‘Tama’
on vol. 6. Assane we know, is Yamar his brother, or maybe himself ?
Overall, this is a great casette, I’ll quote the ‘Rough Guide’:“Youssou N’Dour et Super Étoile de Dakar:
Vols 1 – 16 ( local casettes )
N’Dour and his trusted cohorts take Dakar street grooves
with strong Latin retentions to the portals of international
superstar collaboration, via some wild, wacky and continually
surprising routes. Vols 6, 7 and 10 are particularly strong.
Vol 8, heavily remixed, became the ‘Immigrés’ CD. But the music
works best as one extraordinary stream of consciousness.
Most of it is impossible to find, but a multi cd compilation,
planned for 2000, could become one of the great albums.”
( my copy of ‘Rough Guide’ is a reprint of the 1999 edition )Well, didn’t know I was that lucky, but now you are too.
tracks;
1 Mbarguethe
2 Ferridigua

5 YallaOne last thing, track # 5, ‘Yalla’, takes over 11 minutes
while the tape inlay says 6’39, a minor incident.Posted by Moosat 2:32 PM - Sunday October 26, 2008
Back in the 80’s, I once bought me some casettes of Youssou
N’Dour. Later I found they are quite rare so I decided to
check them last week. I didn’t play them for maybe more than
15 years, so it was great to find out they still work.
Let’s start with vol. 1, ‘Ndeetel Weer Wi’ from 1986.tracks;
