One of my favourite Cuban singers is Monguito ‘El Unico’.
The first time I heard him must have been through ‘Sabrosura’
with Johnny Pacheco from 1980 on Fania. From that moment
on I bought every album I found. A great discovery also was
when I heard him on Arsenio Rodriguez’ album ‘Primitivo’.
Monguito’s nasal voice is indeed unique .. listen ..

We zagen Cuco Valoy al meerdere malen. Hij begon met zijn broer
Martin Los Ahijados. We hadden al een aantal van hun albums. Later
begon hij met zijn zoon Ramón Orlando de groep Los Virtuosos. Ook
in die hoedanigheid zagen we hem meerdere malen. Cuco komt van
de Dominicaanse Republiek en is thuis in de merengue, son montuno,
salsa en guaracha. Hij speelt percussie, gitaar en is zanger. Hij is
bekend als schrijver van de hit ‘Juliana’ ..

We have seen Cuco Valoy on multiple occasions. He started his career
with his brother Martin and Los Ahijados. We had a number of their
albums. Later he started Los Virtuosos with his son Ramón Orlando.
We also had several records of him in that capacity. Cuco comes

He was called el Montunero de Cuba, Wilfredo Leiva (Pio)
Pascual. May 5, 1917 – march 23, 2006. One of the most
popular singers in the Son Montuno genre. he wrote the
hit song ‘Francisco Guayabal’, made famous by Beny Moré.
Pio worked with Bebo Valdez, Noro Morales, Compay
Segundo, Orquesta Aragon, Mariano Mercerón, Conjunto
Caney and Riverside. he was also one of the old stars who
joined Ry Cooder and Juan de Marcos González in their

Cascarita, real name Orlando Guerra, was a Cuban singer
who began his career in Cuba and then moved to Mexico
in 1960. This album is a Mexican release from 1968. It has
son montuno, guaguancó, guaracha and guaracha-mambo.
cascarita worked with Bebo Valdés, Casino de la Playa and

tres player, composer and bandleader Arsenio Rodriguez.
August 31, 1911 – December 30, 1970.
During the 1940’s there was rivalry between the Conjunto’s
of Arsenio and Antonio Arcaño. The album we have today
was a kind of battle between the two. Side one covers five
songs with Arsenio Rodriguez’ Conjunto and side two five

This is DCM-407 on the Discomoda label from Medellin, Colombia.
It first appeared in 1967. Tanta Ropa, (so many cloths) seems to be
a joke. The girl on the frontcover was naked at first. In a later sta-
dium they have drawn a little bikini over the picture. Still not en-
tirely comfortable, as if ‘Me Too’ already existed, Discomoda then
re-released the album under the title of the first song, ‘Ambiente
de Guaracha’, with another sleeve. (small pic) Luis Gonzalez, or Lucho,
was the frontman of the group. The record has some background noise,
the salsa however is still quite enjoyable. Get it, spread it and listen ..

Dit is DCM-407 op het Discomoda label uit Medellin, Colombia. De
plaat verscheen oorspronkelijk in 1967. Tanta Ropa (zoveel kleding)
lijkt een spottende titlel te zijn. het meisje op de hoes was oorspronkelijk
naakt maar in een later stadium is er een klein bikini’tje overheen getekend.
Nog niet helemaal comfortabel, alsof ‘Me Too’ reeds bestond, bracht Disco-
moda de plaat opnieuw uit. Nu met de titel van het eerste nummer, ‘Am-
biente de Guaracha’, en met een andere hoes. (zie kleine foto) Luis Gonzales
ofwel ‘Lucho’ was de leider van de band. Het album heeft wat achtergrond
geluid maar de salsa is nog steeds lekker. Down, deel en luister weer ..
