Ochieng’ Nelly was born Nelson Ochieng Orwa in 1943 in South Nyanza.
He began playing the guitar in his teenage years after being taught
and inspired by the pioneering Congolese Musician Adolf Banyore.
Ochieng’ Nelly got his first guitar in 1961. He travelled widely through
Uganda, Congo and other African countries. He was widely exposed to
Congolese guitar playing styles. He developed his own unique playing
style that was later a big influence to the sound of The Ogara Boys Band,
and Benga music in general.
Nelly worked with his Congolese mentor for a while before joining The
Ogara Boys Band in 1962. The Ogara Boys Band consisting of founding
member John Ogara Odondi and Aketch Oyosi was formed in 1960. Together
the trio started and developed a unique sound that got the name Benga,
in 1963. In 1966, Nelly left Ogara Boys Band to pursue his career
elsewhere. He briefly collaborated with another Benga legend, George
Ramogi. Ochieng’ Nelly has produced several songs such as: Monica Abio,
Ombua Akelo, Celestine Juma, Samuel Aketch among others. His story is
featured extensively in the Ketebul Music produced documentary: Retracing
The Benga Rhythm Through Ochieng’ Nelly’s music, the legend of yester
years Benga , still lives on.

The sleeve of this obscure 12″ record does not give us a
name. Who are the ones that play on this little gem ? I used
Shazam on my phone to find out the band is probably ‘Musa
Olwete Migori Super Stars’. Since this is the only thing we have,
I assume this is the right information. if you think differently,
please be so kind to tell us. Shazam gives side one the title;
‘Marggaret Akinyi Jaber’, however the sleeve does give
three songtitles. What to do ? I just took the titles from
the sleeve and the bandname from Shazam. You tell me ..btw, this slice of benga is dedicated to Ngoni Chivizhe and
his old army buddies, enjoy it and dance the mujiba for me ..01 – Super terera

To compensate the lesser quality of previous post, I’m
giving you another, little better quality, East African record.
This is a Kenyan collector on Editions Namaco with three
great benga bands. Daniel Owino Misiani is present with
his Shiratu Luo Voice Band. We also find Orchestra Sega
and Orchestra Gem Lucky Band. Sweet benga from 1977 ..
We vinden Daniel Owino Misiani
met zijn Shiratu Luo Voice Band. Ook van de partij zijn
Orchestra Sega en Orchestra Gem Lucky Band, lekker ..

I tell you straight, this must be one of, if not, the dustiest
and most crackly old record I have ever posted. It also has
the most worn out sleeve. It is an obscurity. Discogs knows
the band but not this album. Still, crackly or not, the music
is of interest and I didn’t want to withhold it from you.
So switch on your noise filter, listen through the
background (foreground-) noises and enjoy
the Kings Brothers of Kitwe anyway ..
P.S. sleeve and label give different names
to the songs, I’ll tell you both but use the
maar gebruik de label versie in de file ..sleeve;

Blog friend Pete asked me to rip this album again as two
takes, side-A and side-B to avoid the nasty cuts. He is right
to wish for it, the skips were sometimes put at the wrong
place. The best listening experience is as two complete sides.
I removed the previous posting of this great record. Nowadays
I always follow this simple rule, no more nasty cuts ..Blog vriend Pete vroeg me deze plaat opnieuw te rippen als

—- Western Jazz Band – Rosa
—- Victoria Jazz Band – D. osiento, Dholuo

Wederom op het Nigeriaanse Jicco label vinden we deze met de

gelukkig stukken beter. Hoera voor benga ..Oh yes, here we’ve got another little benga pearl from the year 1977.
