Today’s post concerrns another album which was not
ripped by me. It is a quite obscure record with Ngoma
Jazz from Angola. On Discogs I didn’t find it, only a single
with this cover. The cover probably does not belong to
the album, but since we have no other option let’s use
it for now. Listen..

Impossible to travel to Portugal without looking for Angolan
records. I found this album in Coimbra last week. Semba is
the name of the style and I love it. Their self titled record
was recorded in the studio’s of Angola’s Rádio Nacional
in 1984. Always happy to bring some of this hard to
find music. Enjoy listening to ‘Os Jovens do Prenda’.

Het is onmogelijk om niet naar Angolese platen te zoeken
als je Portugal bezoekt. Ik vond dit album in Coimbra vorige
week. Semba is de naam van deze sound en ik ben er gek op.
Hun zelf getitelde plaat werd opgenomen in de studio’s van
Angola’s Rádio Nacional in 1984. Altijd blij als ik weer iets
van deze moeilijk te vinden muziek kan brengen,
luister naar ‘Os Jovend do Prenda’.

José Adelino Barceló de Carvalho is his real name, but we
know him as ‘Bonga’. When he was 23 years old he became
the Portuguese record holder on 400 metres. Angola was
still Portuguese in those days. In 1972 he quit running and
started his musical career. This is his debut album. It is not
the original from 1972, but the 1988 re-issue. I have added
the pictures from Discogs original in the file. Read Bonga’s

José Adelino Barcelo de Carvalho is zijn werkelijke naam,
maar we kenen hem beter als ‘Bonga’. Op zijn 23ste werd
hij de Portugese kampioen op de 400 meter. Angola was
nog Portugees in die dagen. In 1972 stopte hij met hard-
lopen en stortte zich volledig op zijn muzikale carrière. Dit
is zijn debuut album. Mijn kopie betreft niet de originele
uit 1972, maar een heruitgave uit 1988. Ik heb de foto’s
van het origineel van Discogs gepakt en bijgevoegd in de

Just a few days after we had Volume 1 I found the third
volume of this great Angolan series. My friend Edo took
off a fair part of the price and we agreed on the deal. You
are the lucky ones today on which I share it. Let the globe
enjoy listening to this rare record that is still in good

From a crate digging trip in Portugal we find this quite rare
collector of Angolan semba. An underrated type of music
that can clearly use some more attention. Our dear colleague
Stefan from Worldservice brought us ‘Folclore de Angola‘ in
2009, an album which contains a few of the same artists and
from the same period. It is very difficult to find records from
Angola, with a bit of luck on the next record fair.

Uit de kleine hoeveelheid platen gevonden op een tripje
Portugal, vandaag deze verzamelaar. Semba uit Angola
is een ondergewaardeerde muzieksoort die wel wat
extra aandacht verdient. Onze blog collega Stefan van
Worldservice bracht ons deze ‘Folclore de Angola‘ in 2009.
een plaat met enkele van dezelfde artiesten en uit dezelfde
tijd. Het is moeilijk platen uit Angola te vinden, met een
beetje geluk op de komende beurs. Pak weer mee

Angola on the Rebita label. Three of the finest bands in the
field on this compilation record. Nice ..

Back in 2018, when travelling was still an option, I took
a trip to Portugal to find me some Angolan records. It
was an adventure not to forget. In Lisbon I was kinda
lucky and found quite some. Most of them were already
posted. This here album is one of the last I still needed

Weet je nog, in 2018 kon men vrij reizen. Ik heb toen een
tripje gemaakt naar Portugal om wat platen uit Angola te
vinden. Het was een leuk avontuur en ik had redelijk wat
geluk. In Lissabon vond ik een aardig stapeltje platen
waarvan dit een van de laatste is die ik nog niet had
gepost. Geniet van de muziek van Africa Tentação ..
