One of the most difficult types of music to obtain here
in the Netherlands is Cumbia Tipica from Panama. One
needs the right contacts to get lucky. Last week I did,
My friend Edo managed to lay his hands on some forty
singles. When I get lucky, you do too. Today I bring you
the first nine. Sunny sound from seventies and eighties.

Een van de meest moeilijk te vinden muziekstijlen, en
zeker hier, is toch wel Panamese Cumbia Tipica. Je hebt
er de juiste contacten voor nodig. Vorige week kwam het
een en ander op m’n pad, muziekvriend Edo wist de hand
te leggen op zo’n veertig singles. Je weet ‘t, als ik mazzel
heb, heb jij het ook. Vandaag brengen we de eerste 9 van
die bunch. Zonnige sound uit 70’s en 80’s. Down,

Gisteren beloofd, vandaag maar gelijk de koe bij de horens gevat.
Het was een beetje een bevalling, drie keer opnieuw begonnen
omdat het opnemen de mist in ging, eigen schuld, dikke bult.
Wat is het geworden ?

Na wat single dozen door te hebben gespit viel de keuze vandaag
op deze zeven singles uit Panama. De Panamese cumbia is heerlijk
speels en tamelijk anders dan die uit Colombia. Wel zijn enkele
tracks door Colombiaanse componisten geschreven. ‘Cabellos
Largos’ en ‘Mariposita’ zijn van Alfredo Gutierrez en ‘La Danza
Española’ van Gildardo Montoya. Ga er niet voor zitten maar
dans de kamer eens rond met deze ‘Seven 7″

Yesterday promised, today I grasped the nettle. It was a bit
of a job, I had to start over three times cuz I blew the recording,
but that’s my own stupid fault. Let’s see what it became ..

After going through some single boxes the choice was made.
I went for these seven singles from Panama. Panamenian cumbia
is so fanciful and quite different from the Colombian variant.
Some of the tracks were written by Colombian composers though,
‘Cabellos Largos’ en ‘Mariposita’ are by Alfredo Gutierrez and ‘La
Danza Española’ by Gildardo Montoya. Do not sit down to listen
but dance across the room for once with these

Na de elpee van Bush met medewerking van, nu dan eentje van
Osvaldo Ayala zelf. Deze werd enige tijd geleden voor me mee
gebracht uit Panama door onze blog vriend Gonzalez on Speed.
Nogmaals veel dank Gonzalez en de groetjes uit ons kille landje.
Kil is wel het laatste woord wat in ons opkomt als we nier naar
luisteren. Ik geloof dat deze stijl word gezien als Panamese cumbia
al lijkt het niet echt op de Colombiaanse en bekendere variant.

After a small apetizer, participation by this artist on the elpee by
Bush, an album by Osvaldo Ayala himself. This one was brought to
me specially from Panama by our blog friend Gonzalez on Speed.
Thanks a bunch one more time Gonzalez and greetings from cold
Holland. Cold is the last word we think of when listening to this
music. I believe it is called Panamenian cumbia although it is quite
different from its better known Colombian cousin. Warm

Ever since my first encounter with the music from Panama,
I am on the lookout for singles and elpees from over there.
Not an easy job, especially when one lives in Western Europe.
Now I believe in persisting and look, today I can bring you this
little collection of singles and I am very glad to be able doing so.
Some are a little scratchy, hope you’ll enjoy them anyway..

Er is weinig muziek zo moeilijk te vinden als die uit Panama.
Maar zoals gezegd, de aanhouder wint en na enkele jaren
zoeken en struinen heb ik vandaag een bescheiden stapeltje
singletjes voor je op schijf gezet en tot Mp3’s omgetoverd.
Negen stuks waarvan 1 soort van salsa, 2 calypso en zes maal
cumbia Panama style, pak snel en geniet ze deze zomer..

De laatste tijd ben ik druk op zoek geweest naar muziek uit
Panama en los van de plaatjes die Gonzalez voor ons heeft
meegebracht heb ik er zelf ook een paar gevonden. Is dit de
jodelmuziek waar jij het over had Gerrit ? Zo zou je de achter-
grond vocalen wel kunnen omschrijven althans. Ik ben er wel
flink onder de indruk van, dat is zeker. Wat vinden jullie ervan?

Ik krijg behoorlijk veel reacties op het feit dat de groef nu in het
Nederlands wordt geschreven. Heel wat meer respons dan toen
het in het engels ging overigens en om eerlijk te zijn bevalt dat me
wel. Tenslotte is het hele idee gelijkgestemden te vinden langs
deze weg. Nu is dit vandaag geen Afrikaanse plaat, eens kijken
of er meer mensen zijn die hiervoor warm draaien.

After november 26th, when I posted Ceferino Nieto,
we received a message from our friend Gonzalez who
moved to Panama City. He went on a little recordhunt
for us and guess what.. he found some lp’s and singles
and brought them back home when visiting Holland for
the holidays. Thank you so much Gonzalez ! What did he
find ? To start with, this hot slice by Fito Espino and his
group. He is acompanied by singer Eutimia González.
They were loved in all of Panama for their hits. This
lp contains eight of them, especially made for
carnaval. Cumbia from Panama is quite
different than from Colombia, listen
to Don Espino and his great band.
