Eddie Palmieri, front

This is the second lp by latin pianist Eddie Palmieri and his group
‘La Perfecta’. They were the originators of a sound called ‘trombanga’,
introducing two trombones and a flute instead of trumpets. This contributed
a lot to their early sixties succes in the New York latin scene. Later it was
also used by artists such as Willie Colon and Manny Oquendo among others.
The vocals on this 1963 album are taken care of by Ismael Quintana. Enjoy..

Afro International de Mimi Ley

Afro International, front

After spending six years with Franco’s OK Jazz, Kiamanguana
Verckys, the ‘raucous honking’ sax player, set up Orchestre
Vévé and went on producing some of the hard core bands of the
Congolese seventies new wave. This lp is a product of that episode.
We see Verckys performing a quality check at the ‘Izason’ record
factury in Kinshasa ( in jeans ). Verckys’ productions on the ‘Editions
VeVe International’ label are highly recommended and this one by
Afro International de Mimi Ley is no exception. I can’t tell you
anything about the artist but the music speaks for it’s self.
Get it and spread it..

Errol ‘Flabba’ Holt -Roots Radics DubTad’s

3 October 2012|Dub, Jamaica, Reggae|18 Comments

Flabba, front

Yesterday evening I went to a concert of Israel Vibration in the
Amsterdam ‘Melkweg’. They appeared with the Roots Radics
and pulled of a wonderful show. Ever since the departure of
Apple, I guess in 1997, the once so famous trio turned to
continue as a duo. I must say Skelly and Wiss made a
huge entree and had the Melkweg at their feet. Remarkable
was the fact they had three microphones while singing with
two. As if they meant to say; ” Whenever you feel like it,
Apple, you’re welcome to join us again..”  Absolutely
marvelous to find Errol ‘Flabba’ Holt and Dwight Pickney
( I thought it was Bingy Bunny ) still performing in the band
they founded in the seventies. After the show I had the
pleasure of meeting with Errol ‘Flabba’ Holt and be able to
tell him what a star and heroe he is.
An evening to remember, listen to an oldie,
Flabba in dub,…yes I…. seen.. ?

tracks;

1   Flabba dub
2   Screw face dub
3   Bronx bommers
4   Macka dub
5   Ark special
6   Satta dub
7   Criple man scank
8   Rub a dub style
9   Murder dub
10  Super special dub

the pure and honest instrumentation in this type of
sound, the years in which Ansonia released these
albums are to be guessed but that doesn’t spoil
the fun of listening to them, enjoy.

Joe Higgs – “Unity is Power”,Elevation 1978

15 September 2012|Jamaica, Reggae|15 Comments

Joe Higgs, front

This is the guy that taught Bob Marley and the Wailers to sing
properly. “The Wailers weren’t singers untill I taught them. It took
me years to teach Bob Marley what sound consciousness was
about, it took me years to teach the Wailers. For example, they
will be going to make a record and I would go with them, and
there is somebody making constant mistakes. I would just have
to take this part in order to get the record finished in time.”
Bob Marley began singing in informal sessions at Joe Higgs’
yard on Trench Town’s Third Street in 1960. The Wailers first
got together there in 1961, initially calling themselves ‘The
Teenagers’. After quitting the Wailers at the end of spring 1973,
Bunny Livingstone Wailer became unwilling to leave Jamaica.
Joe Higgs, the goup’s original Trench Town mentor, took his
place for the illfated tour with Sly & the Family Stone.
( Rough Guide ) This is an album from 1978, listen…

1   Devotion
2   One man kutchie

Dear Groovers around the Globe, I am still enjoying my
summer break but to show a sign of life, this here post.
Zippyshare is a temporary thing and I seriously think
getting my own serverspace is the best solution for the
future. I want to say welcome back in cyberspace Nauma.
So good to see they can kill our blogs but they can’t kill
our spirits. “music has always been free, like the birds,
the water we drink, the sun and in reality there is no way
to cage music if you don’t want to kill it. have you heard
of anyone able to imprison love, passion, despair or joy ?
very few seem to remember or even understand this simple
truth but more are starting to realize it.”( great quote Nauma )
I hope you enjoy Chief Kollingtons ‘American Yankee’. Did you
know the word ‘yankees’ comes from two very common Dutch
names, ‘Jan’ and ‘Kees’ ? funny thing. The Netherlands are going
through a period of warm to hot weather at the moment and today
we’ll reach temperatures up to 38º Celsius in some parts. Perfect
occasion for a trip to the Amsterdam Vondelpark this afternoon.
The Global Groove Soundsystem will settle down under the big
trees next to Vondel’s statue from about 15.00 hrs. If you are in
the opportunity to pass by, please do. We’ll free some tropical
melodies in the open air like, samba, calypso, reggae, rumba,
son montuno, highlife, forró, juju, chimurenga, benga, ska, etc.
