Lo Mejor de Escalona
por Alberto Fernandez el Vallenato Internacional
y el Acordeon de Gustavo Gutierrez y su Conjunto
Caliente LCS 153-046
Rafael Calixto Escalona martinez was a Colombian composer
whose music is well known and still being played by many.
His Vallenatos belong to the most prominent. He was also a
close friend of Gabriel Garcia Marquez who once stated his
masterpiece novel ‘100 years of solitude’ was in fact a 350
page vallenato. Escalona himself never played an instrument
nor sang his own compositions. One of the main interpreters
of his music was Julio César Bovea Fandiño, better known as
Bovea y sus Vallenatos. The lp we have today concerns another
singer. Alberto Fernandez with the acordeon of Gustavo
Gutierrez y su Conjunto. 12 great songs for lovers of
the genre. Get it & spread it..

Toto Nécessité
Mini Records 1980
Summer starts today, well theoretically that is, we’ve got rain,
it’s cloudy, nothing at all like summer. So what can we do ?
Sit at home and rip another record that makes the sun shine.
Let’s see..
I’ve said it before, the more you listen to it the more you like it,
compas from Haïti is hot stuff. This guy stole my heart with his
swell tropical sound. Got some more of his records waiting,

La Zaïkomania
l’Amour du Travail Bien Fait
Bono Music 1989
Another group coming forth from Zaïko Langa-Langa is this one.
La Zaïkomania made this album in 1989. Recorded in Verckys’
24 track studio in Kinshasa, it sounds fresh as if recorded only
yesterday. Zangilu Popolipo’s guitar and the young voices of
Bebe and marius make this lp a true joy to listen to. Better get
it and give it a couple of spins, I’m quite sure you’ll agree..
tracks;
01 – Olasi
02 – Wadeni
03 – Lutonzol
04 – Pajora
Bezerra da Silva – Eu não sou Santo
BMG 1990
It is from 1990, Bezerra da Silva was 63 years of age when he
made this album. His music belongs to my favourite samba.
Always funny and society critical in his lirycs, Bezerra never
disappoints. If you’re into samba this is must have material.
Don’t you just love the cover of this record, good stuff..

Monguito el Unico – Miren Que Suerte
Toboga 1982
We had about ten of his records untill now but Monguito we
can’t have too much. With his unique voice one can always
recognize him instantly. He is one of the main interpretors
of son montuno and this 1982 slice of hot vinyl contains six
of those. With another great sleeve by José Expósito.
Sweet tunes you don’t want to miss..

“Mondzo, Kalebo & Kindombé” présentent
Bimi, Dindo, Lengos & Ilo Pablo
de Zaïko Langa-Langa en Europe,
Tout Choc Anti Choc
Safari Ambiance
I don’t know how many line-ups they knew, Zaïko Langa-Langa
is a group that changed so many times I’ve lost track. Today’s
album shows one I didn’t see before, with Bimi, Dindo, Lengos
and Ilo Pablo. I am particularly fond of the voice with that nice
vibrato at the end of the phrase, don’t know exactly who is
responsible for it, but I love it. One way or the other,
this is a swell record you won’t regret downloading..
tracks;
01 – Carte d’amour

African Brothers Band International
in Côte d’Ivoire
Agatha, Makossa 1981
On Makossa we find this here album by the great Nana Ampadu
I and his African Brothers Band International. The story of
Agatha and three others are being told on the backsleeve of
the record. Just click on the image and enable to read them.
I’m so happy this lp is in such good condition which is
certainly not always the case with Ghanaian records.
Hard sleeve and thick vinyl is what we prefer to
find. Enjoy listening to one of their finest ..
tracks;
01 – Agatha
02 – Menye osansani
03 – Akwantifi wuo (mother)
04 – Momfa nto me so
Luis E. Martinez
Alejandro Durán
Andrés Landero
3 Reyes del Acordeon vol. 5,
Tropical LD-1324, 1966
It was in october of 2014 that I posted volume two in this series.
It resulted in quite some happy reactions and I promised to bring
the other volumes as well. Now today it is volume 5’s turn. I have
volume three waiting and am still on the look out for #1 and #4.
On side two of the album we see two other names. Track 7 is sung
by Arturo Cabarces but I think with the acordeon of Andrés Landero
and then track 12 is sung by Adriano Salas but I think with the
acordeon of Luis Enrique Martinez. If I’m wrong please leave
us a note. Meanwhile enjoy listening..

and Nigeria’s ‘Evil Genius of Highlife’, Dr. Victor Olaiya both
have their impressive career and decided to make a record
together. It is from 1984 and contains 7 wonderful songs.

Les Grands Succes des Editions Vévé vol. 4
– Various Artists, Sonafric 1978
Completing series is a goal we all have when collecting music.
Take this series of Les Grands Succes des Editions Vévé, we
had volumes 1,2,5,6,7,8 and 9. You can imagine how it feels
to finally find volume 4. Volume 3 is still on my wishlist but
I’m sure one fine day I’ll walk into that missing volume as well.
There is a whole lot of albums yet to be discovered, the search
never ends in that perspective. Verckys is an artist of which we
can never find enough music but it gets harder to find all the
time. The record we’ve got today contains three tracks by
Orchestre Lipua-Lipua and one by Orchestre Kiam,
from 1978 and a real treasure, listen..

his first so to speak, we’ll go back in time later. After
listening to his records over the weekend I decided
to do right and share some salsa with you folks.

Lo Mejor de
Peregoyo y su Combo Vacaná
Delujo 1974
One of the Colombian bands that caught my attention from
the first time I heard them is el Combo Vacaná of Peregoyo.
Their sound is different from what we’re used to hear from
that region. Listen to the guitar
based latin sound of Peregoyo.
This is what All Music Guide says about them;
One of the first bands to combine the folk rhythms o
Colombia’s Buenaventura region and the cumbia of Cuba,
Peregoyo Y Su Combo Vacana were known for their unique
electric guitar-dominated sound. Reviewing a reissue of their
early-70s album, Tropicalismo, RootsWorld claimed that
Peregoyo Y Su Combo Vacana “never lets up as it hurls
groove after incessant groove at you, sax and trumpet
blazing from a path cut by fat, no bloated bass licks,
pervasive percussion and searing
solo and group vocals”.
tracks;
01 – La guitarra desbarata
02 – Facunda
03 – Palito cae
04 – Cariñito
05 – Pa’ la loma
06 – Maximina
07 – Marucha
08 – La vaca loca
09 – Caravana
10 – Che’ pa changa
11 – Descarga vacaná
