Sunny Adé and his Green Spot Band
Nigerian’s Juju-Highlife at it’s Best
African Songs Ltd. 1973
Sunny Adé and his Green Spot Band made a series of 4 albums called
The Master Guitarist. They were recorded in the famous EMI Studio’s
at Abbey Road London and this LP is ‘The Best of Sunny Adé Master Guitarist’.
I am not sure but if we believe the text on the back, written by some former
owner, it could well be from 1973. Logically, we may conclude it is not from
after 1973. The 4 albums are a collection of his best songs in the first 5 years
of his fame. ( 1966 – 1971 ) Remarkable is the fact the LP contains 12 songs
that stand alone. We are used to find his albums with one or at most two tracks
on one LP-side. I read somewhere, the phenomenon develloped later and in the old
days the songs were much shorter. Also different from his later work is that the
music from this period is called Juju-Highlife instead of just Juju. These songs
are very fresh and expose a young Sunny Adé. Love the chorus.

african 360.050, 1973
What a lot of great bands early seventies in Congo. I am posting
the music but am learning just as much as you folks. This collector
on african brings us more obscure artists from those days and although
I planned to make a move to a different African direction, you convinced me
to do another Congolese album today. The album starts with a sublime
track by Johnny Bokelo and his Orchestre Conga, sweet guitarsound,
and it ends with Franco’s O.K. Jazz and ‘Ou est le serieux?’. In between
quite a few names that are new to me too. Elegance Jazz, Surprise
Los Angel, Symba, Mando Negro Kwala-Kwa or Zembe-Zembe.
I didn’t know one of them and they all perform beautifully. We are also very
lucky the LP is in mint condition and sounds as new. I found this one at
the fair with a load of brothers and sisters, only now I slowly discover what
a treasurebox I bumped into. Happy to be in the opportunity to share
so much delightful music with you, we’re all lucky bastards here.

Groovers around the world,
another special find I recently did, is this one. It seems the entire
web was wondering what to find on african 360.094. I could not find
a single word about it. Well, here it is, and it’s a beauty. Orchestre
Shama-Shama led by Mopero Wa Maloba. I found out Mopero also
was the man behind Orchestre Cavacha and was somehow connected
to Zaiko Langa Langa. Another piece of the african 360.series puzzle falls in
place. Although from 1976, the LP looks as new, it does sound quite 70’s.
Can anyone give us some more information on Shama-Shama or Mopero?

Orchestre Sossa
Pathé Marconi / EMI 1976
Formed around 1975 by Pierre Moutouari and his brother Michel.
Earlier he played in Orchestre Sinza with his other brother Kosmos
who was also a member of Les Bantous de la Capitale. Pierre
Moutouari moved on with his career in 1979 and went solo. Find

The album also contains songs by Gabriel Dianzolo, Hyacinthe Malonga
and Gabriel Mienandi. Listen.

Orchestre Les Mangelepa – The Riot Continues,Pathé Marconi EMI 1977
From 1977 comes this album by les Mangelepa, a Congolese band
that operated in Kenya. To give you some decent information I’d better

As you may have seen I started a little enquete to see what lives most
among our visitors, it runs untill the 6th of may when the page has it’s two

My dear groovers, I am thrilled to present to you, one of
the missing links at Bolingo’s african discography, a find
that makes me very happy. This is one of Congo’s greatest
bands, african 360.121, Orchestre Zaiko Langa Langa
with two tracks of the hand of Teddy Sukami, one by Bimi
Ombale and one by Lengi Lenga, enjoy!

Chief Osadebe – 77, vol. 1,african 1977
This is a special album, Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe & his
Nigeria Soundmakers on african, ‘the’ Congolese label. I have
become a fan of Stephen Osita since I discovered his music
hardly two years ago. It’s the most mellow feelgood sound.
Listen to this 1977 beauty and agree, good stuff.

Ashanti Brothers Band – Kill Me and Fly
Philips West African Records 1978
I was trying to find me some usefull information on this topic,
but Ashanti Brothers Band’s album ‘Kill me and Fly’ seemed
( how about this word ) ungoogleable. The leader of the band’s called
Osei Vasco, and that’s really all I know. Being from 1978, I must
say, the vinyl is in very good condition and spins beautiful.
And then, the music, I have seldom heard such great highlife,
I’m very fund of this sound with warm vocal harmony
and hammond organ !

Maître Dizzy Mandjèkou – Saïla, Papa Disco
Dizzy Mandjèkou’s first solo project after being the lead guitarist
of les Grands Maquisards, Afrisa International of Tabu-Ley Rochereau
and the African All Stars. Dizzy dedicated it to his fans from those days.

Youssou Ndour et le Super Etoile

This LP by the great Youssou Ndour does not give us a single
word of information, we can only guess. Just name and titles are
displayed, and ‘Production-B.Diagne-Bruxelles.Youssou’s picture on
the front cover tells us he was still a youngster and the internet told
me it was released in 1982. If you can tell us who played on it
I would be very pleased. Enjoy Youssou Ndour et le Super Etoile.

One of Europe’s biggest recordfairs takes place in Utrecht twice
a year, this weekend is the next edition and I already had the
chance to pick a couple of gems from the enormous offer out there.

The first LP I want to share with you is this one, it hit me as soon as I
played it and recorded it straight away. I could not find any information
on Celi Bittsu on the web and ask you to fill me in on the subject.
Does the name concern a person or a group ?
It is released on the Sacodis label from Abidjan but the music sounds
Congolese, is it ? The language is quite certain Lingala, do you agree ?
A year of release maybe ? Track #3 is called after Sacodis’ great producer
Aboudou Lassissi who did this album too of course. I am sure you’re
gonna love this wonderful rarity, I certainly do, get it while you can.

Maestro Laba Sosseh con l’Orquesta Aragon -Akoguin Theresa, Disco Stock
We had a couple of Laba Sosseh LP’s before but this is the
best one untill now to my humble opinion. With the famous
Orquesta Aragon, an African release but with a Cuban band.
Mellow son Cubano and Afro Cuban mingle, all relaxed
and ready for hot summer weather, let’s have some.

Oriental Brothers International Band – Ihe Eji Aku Eme,Afrodisia 1984
Oriental Brothers albums always find their way to lovers
of Nigerian highlife. A band widely appreciated, that is led
by the brothers Opara. Sometimes by Warrior but this time
by his brother Dan-Satch. Both of them delivered great LP’s
and scored loads of hits during the seventies and eighties.
Sometimes separate and sometimes together, enjoy this 1984
LP of the Oriental Brothers International Band.
