    Scotty, voorkant

leggen.
“..leave the studio man, I don’t want you inside here,
you can’t play bass, you can’t play drums, leave the studio man..”

When I read your comment Scotty, I knew immediately what to do.
Walk to the record cabinet and take this album to put it on the turntable.
The next step is clear off course. What fine tunes this man made, I flashed
back to some memories at the spot. Especially song # 15 of the record
sent me back to memory lane. In the old days when I used to frequent
youthcenter the Tagrijn where I first laid my ears on it, saw it before
me straight away. “..leave the studio man, I don’t want you inside here,
you can’t play drums, you can’t play bass, leave the studio man..” haha..

    titels ;

    01 – Draw your brakes
    02 – Children children

    Hugh Mundell, voorkant

    Hugh Mundell, voorkant

lp is “Africa Must be Free by 1983”. Je vind hem hier vandaag. Arme

Hugh Mundell was born in 1962 and was first believed to become an
athlete, he joined several streetraces when young. However, after being
discovered by dub master Augustus Pablo he recorded his first album
named “Africa Must be Free by 1983”. You may find it here today.
Hugh wrote all the songs which were recorded between 1976 and 1978.
It was supervised and mixed by Lee Perry. He also kept a close friendship
with singer Lacksley Castell of whom you may find an album at this page
as well. Poor Hugh was shot in a dispute over a fridge when only 21 years
of age. Maybe not being african himself but in 1983 he was free.
His last recording, the single “Hey Good Looking” is added to the
lp ‘Blackman’s Foundation” which you may find here.
I also digitised Hugh Mundell’s last album called “Mundell”. It is in
the file as well. Alsobe sure to enjoy the rare footage in the video
underneeth this article. Enjoy the beautiful voice of Hugh Mundell..

    titles van “Africa Must be Free by 1983”;

    01 – Let’s all nite
    02 – My mind
03 – Africa must be free by 1983
04 – Why do black men fuss and fight
    05 – Book of life
    06 – Run evolution a come
    07 – Day of judgement
    08 – Jah will provide
    09 – Ital slip

    titels van “Mundell”;

Hello, this week it is almost like I’m being cursed with
something, every time I pick a record to rip, it is being
scratched or it fails to play good in some other way.
It got on top of me and I can’t seem to get rid of it.
Today I failed to record another album, now
I’m posting an lp I recorded some time

    Frankie Paul, front

I always loved his powerful voice, especially the last song
of this album is a straight killer. Ever since I heard it early
eighties I kept playing it. Still love it today so bringing this
‘Best of’ was a matter of time only. ‘Dancehall worries’ was
also released in a diffrent version and under a different name.
It was called ‘War is in the dance’ on Greensleeves’ album,
“Pass the Tu-sheng-peng”. I have added it as a bonustrack
so you can compair them yourself, enjoy..

    tracks;

01 – Girl you are a crazy lover
    02 – I want to know
    03 – Give me play
    04 – No roof
    05 – Addis ababa

    Merger, front

    Merger, inside

Not long ago I was watching a documentary on Youtube about the
developement of reggae in the UK. I really liked it, the birth of two-tone
for instance, wonderful video which I added below. It’s a great piece of
history I enjoyed a lot. There is one group however of which I would
have loved to find some footage in the documentary. This lp by Merger
was a personal favourite in the early days and I think the group deserves
a place in that story. One way or the other, it’s never too late to give
them the attention deserved so here is 77 which is obviously their
1977 lp. It brings back memories, were you there..?
    Get it & spread it..

    tracks;

    01 – 77
    02 – Ghetto child
    03 – Life song
    04 – Exiles ina babylon
    05 – Understanding

    Michigan and Smilie, front

    Michigan and Smilie, back

We knew them as Michigan and Smilie but here on their first
lp they are still called General Smilie and Papa Michigan.
They scored big time with their hits Rub-a-Dub Style and the
second song on this lp, Nice Up the Dance. Being one of the
first duo’s, they caused a craze for this type of reggae, they
toured Europe early eighties. I saw them in the Amsterdam
Paradiso. On the famous Studio One label, produced by
the great Sir Cocksone Dodd who also arranged it and
took care of all engineering and sound recording.
Don’t you just love their style, towell and all..
It was big fun those days.

    tracks;

    1 Rub-a-dub style
    2 Nice up the dance
    3 Thank you jah
    4 Compliment to studio one
    5 Time to be happy
    6 Eye of danger
