Vorige week was ik te gast bij Raul en Bas van ‘Hot Mama Hot’,
een vynil programma bij Salto Radio Amsterdam. Altijd weer een
heerlijke ervaring met die jongens samen plaatjes te draaien. een
bonte mix van stijlen passeert de revue. Bas draaide wat oude reggae
klassiekers en ik realiseerde me weer wat een geluk ik heb gehad in de
jaren tachtig mijn collectie te mogen opbouwen. Thuis gekomen ben
ik volledig geïnspireerd m’n oude reggae uit de kast gaan halen. helemaal
in de mood geraakt ontdekte ik dat deze kraker op de Global Groove nog
nooit aan bod was gekomen. Hierbij maak ik dat dus even goed. Luister
naar Big Youth en de klassieker Dreadlocks Dread..

Last week I had the pleasure to appear as guest deejay at the studio with
Raul en Bas of ‘Hot mama Hot’ by Salto Radio Amsterdam. Always a huge
joy and fun experience to play vinyl with them guys. An eclectic mixture of
styles passes by every time. Bas was playing some reggae classic hits and I
realized again how lucky I have been to work on my reggae collection during
the eighties. Once I got home I was totally inspired and pulled some old records
from the cabinet. This is when I found out this classic Big Youth album never
found its way to the Global Groove yet. High time to make up and post it.

In 1983 kwamen the Techniques nog eens bij elkaar en maakten,
ditmaal zonder Slim Smith, deze plaat. 12 jaar na hun laatste optreden
maar nog altijd buitengewoon vaardig zoals dit album duidelijk maakt.
Kant A is wel wat beter dan kant B, luister zelf..

In 1983 the Techniques came together, without Slim Smith this time,
and made this here record. 12 years after their latest performance
they show they were still very skillful as this album illustrates.
A side is slightly better than B side, listen..

Keith ‘Slim’ Smith’s untimely death in 1973 brought an end
to the career of one of Jamaica’s most revered singers whose
musical legacy remains untarnished to this day. An achingly
soulful singer, whose vocal style was reminiscent of the
Impressions’ Curtis Mayfield, Slim Smith personified the
greatness of the rocksteady and early reggae periods of
which he is a principal voice. Slim Smith started his career
as a member of the Victors Youth Band who where among
the champions of the 1964 Jamaica Festival. Moving to Duke
Reid’s Treasure Isle label, he and Frederick Waite, Franklyn
White and Winston Riley became known as the Techniques.
Slim Smith moved to Studio One as a solo artist recording a
series of succesful singles that Clement Dodd compiled as the
basis for the ‘Born to Love’ album. This album is a testament
to Slim Smith’s greatness both as a singer and a songwriter.

nummers. Dit is de cd versie op Treasure Isle records, CSCD 8019
met 16 nummers uit 1995. Alton Ellis werd ook wel de Godfather
of Rocksteady genoemd. In het kader van de Studio One releases
hier op de Global Groove, veel luisterplezier..

Goeiemiddag, hier is de volgende heerlijke Studio One plaat.
De werken van Clement Coxsone Dodd zijn legendarisch te
noemen en daarom doen we er nog maar eentje. Delroy
Wilson is een van de pioniers afkomstig van jamaica en
deze schijf vinyl brengt twaalf prachtige songs van zijn
hand. Helaas heeft hij een beetje kraak en nummer 7
ook een tik, sorry daarvoor. Verder veel luistergenot.

Good afternoon, see here the next wonderful Studio One
record. The works of Clement Coxsone Dodd can be called
legendary so let’s do one more today. Delroy Wilson is one
of the pioneers from Jamaica and this slice of vinyl brings us
twelve beautiful songs by him. Unfortunately it has some
background noise and track 7 also a pop, sorry about that.
Part from that it’s pure listening pleasure.

Het was ergens in februari 1986, Barrington Levy trad op in Paradiso
Amsterdam. Ik was 28 jaar oud en met twee goede vrienden trokken
we naar Amsterdam om hem te zien. Het werd een memorabele avond.
Een van mijn vrienden, G.J. Kamer had toen nog een eigen radioprogramma
bij de KRO, ‘Demo’ genaamd. Hij had de opdracht meegekregen om Barrington
te interviewen, dus na de show werden we in de Vip Bus gevraagd die voor de
deur van Paradiso stond. Gerard deed zijn interview en toen hebben we nog
wat met die jongens gerookt en wat foto ‘s genomen. Hier onder zie je er een
paar van Barrington en Jackie Mittoo. Ze zwaaiden ons nog uit bij het afscheid,
al met al een avond om nooit meer te vergeten..wat een aardige jongens..

It was somewhere in february 1986, Barrington Levy performed in Paradiso
Amsterdam. I was 28 years of age and with two close friends went to see him.
It became an evening to remember. One of my friends, G.J. Kamer still had his
own show at KRO Radio in those days and brought a recorder to interview
Barrington, so after the gig we were invited in the Vip Bus which was parked
in front of Paradiso. Gerard did his interview and we stayed a while, smoking
and taking some pictures. Below you’ll find some of them with Barrington and
Jackie Mittoo. A memorable night all together, see how they
waved us a happy goodbye..
