Lucho Beltran y su Selección Sabanera
Discos Fuentes 1983

25 December 2014|Colombia, Tropical de Colombia, Vallenato|1 Comment

Lucho Beltran, front

The more I listen to it, the more I love it. Vallenato with
it’s jumpy basslines and sweet accordeons, impossible
to ignore. Lucho Beltran has a good strong voice, his
songs are full of character, with the brightness we hear
in Lisandro Meza’s music, just to make a comparison.
Listening to this lp I was sold straight away, I find
it irresistible, how about you..?

tracks;

1 Sodoma y gomorra

3 Dando y dando
4 El gallo canillon
5 El limpiabotas

Osvaldo Nunes & the Pop’s – Ta’ Tudo Aí !
Equipe 1974

24 December 2014|Brasil, Pop, Samba|1 Comment

Osvaldo Nunes, front

It is from 1974, Rio de Janeiro Brasil, on the Equipe label
and quite something different than one would expect.
Osvaldo Nunes was here before with a straight samba
album but the one we have here today has a much more
poppy sound. It is samba but with more guitar and organ,
mostly we hear a more accoustic sound with violão,
cavaquinho and cuíca and such. Osvaldo Nunes and
the Pop’s really rock ! Give it a spin, listen
and make up your own mind..

tracks;

1 Ta’ tudo aí !
2 Cateretê
3 Outro amor de carnaval
4 Você deixa ?
5 Guerra santa
6 Tamanqueiro
7 Dendeca
8 Dôce canção

23 December 2014|Guinée, Mandingo, Rumba-Guinée|5 Comments

Bembeya Jazz National, front

I love this record. The band gets the audiance in the right
atmosphere from the first minutes. The group is only still
being introduced when the crowd starts cheering already.
A live registration from 1971 for their 10th anniversary,
one can hear these guys were extremely popular,
with the late and great Aboubacar Demba
Camara. Rumba-Guinée is the word..,
how sweet it is.

tracks;

1 Introduction
– Temtemba
– Wouloukolo
– Lefa

El Michi y su Combo Bravo – El Taconazo
Zeida / Codiscos 1983

21 December 2014|Colombia, Salsa|4 Comments

Michi Sarmiento, front

I was in the mood for some salsa and after checking a
couple of lp’s from the top of the pile, Michi Sarmiento
came out as today’s winner. Forget about the album’s
awful cover and turn straight to the music, it does not
compare. Michi’s sound was one of the most popular in
Colombia and this slice of salsa brava from 1983 does
not make an exception. Vocals by Felipe Sembergman
on tracks; 1,4,7 and 9, Hernando Perez on tracks; 2,5,
8 an 10, Michi Sarmiento on tracks; 3 and 6.
Get it & spread it as usual..

Our buddy Kwabena asked me if I had any Kumapim Royals and it just
so happens I had this lp waiting for it’s turn to get posted.
So here it is, sooner then planned but why not. Akwasi Ampofo Adjei,
A.A.A. or the Shining Star or Dada Thick, call him how you like, his
music is simply wonderful. Kumapim Royals Band, ‘Band of the Year’,
the album is from 1981. I just wish I knew them in those days but
better late then never I guess. Interested ?
Download ‘Sika ye Pena’, listen and enjoy..

18 December 2014|Colombia, Merengue, Parranda, paseo, Porro|2 Comments

Parranda Costeña, front

Parranderos were travelling musicians, taking their instruments
under the arm and going ’round from bar to bar to play their songs
for the public and earn a few bucks this way. The lp we have for you
today is one by Efrain Gonzalez y sus Muchachos, it is his first
appearance here at the GG but it’s a good one. Singers are Esteban
Salas, Agustin Polo and Buitraguito.( we’ve seen him before ) On
the obscure ‘Bambuco’ label, as usual they forgot to put a
year of release on the label or backsleeve, if
anyone should know, can you tell us ?
Meantime, just get it, play it and
tell your friends about it..

Apollo International Band of Ghana

Onye Oma Cy Records 1984

17 December 2014|Ghana, Highlife, Nigeria|7 Comments

Apollo International, front

For the lovers of Ghanaian highlife we have an album
by Dan Amakye Dede and his Apollo International Band
of Ghana. It was recorded in Nigeria in 1984 and sounds
a little noisy. It is always difficult, should I keep this album
from posting because it is crackly or continue without holding
back ? I guess I’d rather choose the second option.
Guitar-highlife from Ghana but made in Nigeria is one
of the most popular styles at our page, so if you forget the
noise I’m sure this one will also find a happy listening ear..

went to England and made his islandsound in the
cold for a change, obscure record with blanco

a year of release, can ya tell us too ?
..gimme some feedback if it hits ya..

p.s.
about the tracklist, label claims 5 numbers on

Kouka C. Celio et l’Orchestre le Peuple
Beau-Saccot Sound, BSS 3301

15 December 2014|Congo|6 Comments

Kouka C. Celio, front

Over the past years we had a couple of lp’s with Trio CePaKos,
with Pamelo Mounk’a and Kosmos Moutouari. The ‘Ce’ stands
for Celestin Kouka Celio and today we have an album of their
Orchestre le Peuple but just with Kouka C. Celio. It sounds as
bright as we already hoped it would, just love them guitars of
Orchestre le Peuple. Celio’s voice, the warm hornsound,
and I didn’t even mention those phat rhythms yet, hell
yes, in other words, do not miss listening to another
great piece of Congo’s musical inheritance,
..get it & spread it..

Morgan Blanco – Cumbias Gigantes
OCM, Mexico DM 199

13 December 2014|Colombia, Cumbia, Mexico|4 Comments

Morgan Blanco, front

Good morning groovers, what have we got cooking today ?
This lp by Morgan Blanco is a Mexican release. When
listening closely, you hear the fade-outs are done a little
sloppy, it seems OCM label raked together a bunch of
Morgan Blanco’s cumbias on this lp. It does not appear
to be a career album. The cumbias presented however
are of Colombian quality, renditions of songs written by
Ovidio Martinez, Rosendo Martinez, Rafael Mejia,
Nicolás Ortiz, Carlos Román and Morgan
Blanco himself. Worth at least
a couple of spins..
Enjoy.

tracks;

1 Noche de cumbiamba

Dr. Kitch – Various Artists
Island Records ILP 954

12 December 2014|Calypso, Trinidad|2 Comments

Dr. Kitch, front

Calypso has always been one of my favourite music styles,
especially when from the sixties which period I think brought
forth the best sound. When calypso turned into ‘soka’, what
means Soul Calypso, it changed the sound in an irreversible
way. Today I’m happy to bring you this slice of sixties calypso
which contains both known and some lesser known songs.
‘Shame and Scandal’ by the Wailers was new to me, nice
version, shame about the soundquality. Like mostly the
songs tell us little stories, not seldom hiding a
second story between the lines. Enjoy them
and share them if you can..

tracks;

1 Lord Kitchener – Dr. Kitch
2 Lord Creator – Big bamboo
3 The Wailers – Shame and scandal
4 Lord Cristo – Dumb boy and the parrot
5 Lord Kitchener – The road

7 Mighty Sparrow – Village ram
8 Lord Kitchener – Neighbour, neighbour
9 Lord Kitchener – Love in the cemetery
10 Mighty Sparrow – Harry, elaine and mama
11 Lord Kitchener – Jamaica woman

Duo Los Ahijados – Vol. 5
Kubaney SMT-436

9 December 2014|Dominican Republic, various Latin|1 Comment

Duo Los Ahijados, vol. 5, front

I found this album by Duo Los Ahijados accidentally, it came in
the wrong cover when I bought it. The sleeve you see here was
taken from the web. So the brothers Cuco and Martin Valoy are
back at the Groove with a hidden treasure, it was an unexpected
find when going through my latin albums this afternoon. Being
from the Dominican Republic themselves, they were famous for
their renditions of Cuban songs but went in multiple directions
as we can hear on this lp. Love their bright guitarsound and
vocal harmony. We’ve got five other
albums, you know the drill..

tracks;

1 Olemua
2 El hombre misterioso
3 Yo la espero
4 Corazon de acero
5 El columpio de la vida
6 Contestacion a seguir tus huellas
7 El zapateo
8 Soldado
