This Volume 3 of yet another series of albums on the african label, was
released in 1985 but the recordings on it are much older. It is a
mixture of numbers, some solo and some sung together. Both Rochereau
and Sam Manguana sound very young and fresh. Beautiful music.

Sacodis 1980
From the same year as the previous Sacodis LP, with Laba Sosseh, is this
album, ‘Lassissi presents Monguito el Unico’. Also produced by Aboudou
Lassissi and with the participation of Chocolate, Alfredito Valdez and
doing the background vocals, the great Adalberto Santiago.

OK Jazz – Authenticité vol. 3, african 1966
Let’s go back in time, the major part of these tracks have been
recorded in 1964, that’s 45 years ago. Only the last track, with
Verckys on saxophone is from 1966. For an album, that old, it spins
surprisingly well. This is vol. 3 of another great series on the african
label, volume 5 is also in my posession but the other volumes are still
on my hunting list, maybe I’ll find some on the next recordfair in november.

Sacodis 1980
West African sonero Laba Sosseh is here with a splendid album
from 1980. Together with the great Monguito he brings us some
son montuno African style. Produced by Aboudou Lassissi on the
Sacodis label from Abidjan. Best of both worlds I would say.

From Ecuador, this is Julio Jaramillo. After one of our visitors asked
me for it, I found a couple of his albums. Although famous for his boleros,
this is an album with only pasillos. The LP has a very laidback atmosphere,
partly because of the fine participation of harpplayer Gonzalo Castro.
Enjoy the sweet voice of Julio Jaramillo.

What a nice pick-nick this would be, roasted porc, bottle of beer,
some son montuno in the background and a view over wheatfields as far
as the eye reaches. The music on this album tastes just as sweet.
Special guest on saxophone is the legendary Dexter Johnson.

Johnny Bokelo made a lot of records during the 70’s and 80’s, this is
an album from 1981. It’s quite hard to find some decent information
about Johnny, if you can tell us something interesting about him,
please do so. In the meantime enjoy this nice album, sorry for the
snaps, crackles and pops. It’s been played over and over.

Fuji is a Nigerian music style that started at the end of the 60’s.
It exists mainly from percussion, like talking drums, and vocals.
Fuji got so popular during the 80’s that it took over juju. It is said
that fuji represents the Islam like juju does for the Cristians.
Kollington Ayinla was the second most popular Fuji wizard after Sikiru
Ayinde Barrister and the two were rivals untill fuji got so popular,
even called dancefloor exitement, that it didn’t matter anymore.
With razorsharp lyrics, Ayinla was the source of social commentary
in the Yoruba Muslim music scene. Second fuji album on this page,
with some left to follow, enjoy !

Most of time, Bolero is too sweet for my ears but Carlos Embales
brings it with some little rough edges that make it exactly right.
Embales is famous for his rumba but for this occasion he treats us
with Bolero, Guaguancó, Pregón and Son, his beats are imbeatable.

Usually I would only remove names from covers and futher leave things
as they are, on this one fixing was too disturbing so I left it. Another
very sweet Zaiko Langa Langa LP from 1988 with the great voices of
Bimi and Malage. Nothing can go wrong here, simply beautiful.

by Admiral Dele Abiodun & his Top Hitters Band. Don’t miss it.

The pictures on this LP’s cover are made in the Paris Rex Club.
I visited the Rex Club once around 1981, it was in the Rue des Bonnes
Nouvelles I remember. Hey Paris people, does that club still exist
at all ? I would love to go back to that specific night, just my 3
friends and me in an all African crowd. They had Mr. and Mrs. elections,
lots of African dancemusic, we had a great time.
