    Arsenio Rodríguez, front

One of the key figures in latin music was this great man.
Arsenio Rodríguez is considered father of the modern afro-cuban
sound. His musical roots lay in the Congolese rituals of his
family, instilled in him by his grandfather who was a slave,
and it is said that he brought many of the toques used to
adress deities into son. He was a predigious composer –
his sones remain dominant in the repertoire – and his group,
which he expanded with first congas and later an extra trumpet,
more percussion and piano, became the most influential of the
1940’s. Rodríguez also changed the structure of son, expanding
the montuno with a descarga section of improvised solos.
    Arsenio Rodríguez ( 1911 – 1970 ) was blind from age eight,
he was kicked by a horse. He was a superb tres player and one
of Cuba’s all time great bandleaders and son composers. Arsenio
grew up in a ‘solar’, a small neighbourhood community. It was his
custom to play the guitar, his neighbours would join in both
vocally and instrumentally, using sticks, pieces of chairs, boxes
or anything they could find to create a musical sound. On such
a night, someone used a cowbell as their contribution to this
primitive music and it was from this that the cowbell evolved as
part of the instrumentation of today’s Latin-American rhythm
sections. ( Rough Guide and backsleeve )
Congolese composer Grand Kalle was called the father of rumba,
he became inspired by Cuban artists like Arsenio Rodríguez, so now
we can see the circle close, afro-cuban getting round and round.
tracks like Independence cha cha and Africa Boogaloo are typical
examples, from Congo to Cuba and back,
music works miracles don’t you think..
    listen to Arsenio Rodríguez,
    ( do we hear Monguito
    there ? )

    tracks;

    1 La pasion
    2 Me engañastes juana
    3 Lo que dice justi
    4 Rumba guajira
    5 Coplas de españa
    6 Que mala suerte
    7 Fiesta en el solar
    8 Me equivoque contigo
    9 A gozar mujeres
    10 No lo niegues
    11 El lema del guaguancó

    Varieté Africaine vol.6, front

The sound is a bit crackly, some pops and hiss, it’s sleeve
looks quite worn out but still,..I love it. It’s from 1977 on
Editions Namaco, Libreville Gabon. The tracks are divided
in two with the first parts on side-a and the second parts on
side-b of the album. A bit strange I think but now it’s been
ripped to mp3’s we can put first and second part behind
each other to listen to them in correct order. Orchestre
T.P. Zembe Zembe appears here first time and I am very
enthousiast about them, sweet guitars and vocals..
So get it and spread it like always, enjoy.

    tracks;

    1 Orchestre T.P. Zembe Zembe – Kamua pt.1
2 Orchestre T.P. Zembe Zembe – Naleli la vie pt.1
    3 Orchestre Zaiko Langa-Langa – Elo pt.1
    4 Orchestre T.P. Zembe Zembe – Kamua pt.2
5 Orchestre T.P. Zembe Zembe – Naleli la vie pt.2
    6 Orchestre Zaiko Langa-Langa – Elo pt.2

From the moment I first laid my ears on it, I was sold.
Jíbaro from Puerto Rico is a style of music impossible
to ignore, we had a bunch of lp’s already. Ramito, Chuito
and one by German Rosario too. This one was waiting
for a while to find it’s place and today it finally comes
through to you. Hope you like it,
    No need to rush however,
    it is here to stay.

    tracks;

    1 Todo lo tenia postizo
    2 A puerto rico
3 Dime quien tiene tu amor
4 A solas con mi dolor
    5 Huerfano en la vida
    6 Las chicharroneras
    7 Esdrujula

    Super Mazembe, front

Orchestra Super Mazembe was a Congolese group that
went to Nairobi, Kenya in 1974. They were one of the most
popular bands in the genre together with among others,
Les Mangelepa and Samba Mapangala. Their biggest hit
was ‘Shauri Yako’, originally by Nguashi Ntimbo.

It is still as new as when I bought it in 1982. This was one
of my first encounters with African music. I didn’t post it yet
thinking that everybody has it already, a mistake off course.
On Virgin Records and maybe a little on the commercial side
I think this lp contains a couple of fairly nice songs. If you
haven’t got it already give it a spin and listen yourself.

    tracks;

    1 Mbanda ya mobange
    2 Kassango
    3 Ji ji
    4 Nanga
    5 Bamana
    6 Samba
    7 Malaba d’amour
    8 Mokano
    9 Mwana nyiau

    Cumbias solamente Cumbias vol.2, front

You liked volume one a lot so I guess volume two will
gain some happy listeners as well. This lp contains a
couple of huge hits to my humble opinion. Track # one
for instance with the great Lucho Pérez is a straight
killer. But off course Pedro Laza’s ‘Navidad Negra’ and
Calixto Ochoa’s ‘Recordando el Pasado’ are famous
cumbias you don’t want to miss. My personal favourite
is Andres Landero, his voice and rhythms are hotter
than hot and capture me from beginning to end..
Cumbias solamente Cumbias vol.II, a must
    for your Colombian collection.

    tracks;

    Fruko, front

I am quite sure I posted some 5 or 6 Fruko lp’s in the past
but somehow they got lost, really do not understand how.
One way or the other, I’ll bring them back straight away.
This is ‘Fruko – El Violento’ from 1973 on Discos Fuentes
off course and with his buddies Wilson Saoko and Joe
Arroyo, lead vocals. Fruko and his friends were crazy
about New Yorks salsa brava movement on Fania. The
lp’s front and backsleeve breath more or less the same
gangster look like for instance Willie
    Colon’s covers in that era.
For now, a piece of Colombia’s salsa history with
Fruko y sus Tesos, get it and spread it..

    tracks;

    1 Tronco seco
    2 El violento
    3 Nadando
    4 La nueva bamba
    5 To solo tu
    6 Salsa na ma
    7 Alma navideña
    8 Lamento cubano
    9 Mosaico matancero,
    – Vamos pa’l campo
    – La nochebuena
    – Rumba en navidad

    Bavon Marie Marie, front

Welcome everybody at the new website of the Global Groove.
We’re very happy you have found your way to us again. Some
features have been changed a bit but in general the page should
be working more or less similar as the old one. We are still working
on a few things but we’re good to go, please click around and find
all the older GG posts restored and working again.
Only the rar-files that contain an apostrophe ( ‘ ) still need
some attention, you wont be able to download them yet, this
problem will be solved within the next few days, have fun..

To begin with, an album I have been saving for the release of the
new and improved GG. It took a long time but finally we’re here.
Franco’s younger brother Bavon Marie-Marie is here with an lp
you’re gonna love, of that I am sure. He was difficult as a kid but
quite intelligent. He used to drink a lot and bleech his skin but
his music is wonderful. This lp is a quite rare one, I could not
find any useful additive info, just listen, the music speaks for
it’s self. If anyone knows the year of release or other information
about it, please send us a comment and brighten up the mistery..

    tracks;

    1 Batela moana
    2 Sala lokola mobali
    3 Succes ya ba ndombe
    4 Embembe ya mbua
    5 Hélé
    6 Honisa tika ndoki

    Jonah Moyo, front (1)

Good evening, the past few days engineers have been busy
making the final ajustments and testing the new page. This
weekend the Global Groove is about to migrate. We are
moving to the following URL, https://www.globalgroovers.com
So no more blogspot and no more webhosters to spoil the fun.
I am very happy to announce the new and independent GG.
From next week you will be redirected to the new adress when
visiting us, don’t be surprised it’s all been planned carefully.
You’ll find all the old posts, from the very beginning in 2008
untill today, copied and restored. Downloads will come from
the GG’s own dedicated server so NO bloody body can throw away
any of our precious files again. I want to ask fellow bloggers to
change the link on their pages when relevant from this week-
end, that would be really nice, thanks in advance.
We will appear without thumbnail of our latest post, that is
a shame but there’s no way when using WordPress as we do.
Still, thumbnail or not, I’m gonna continue preserving the old
and almost forgotten gems from the past. African, South
American and Caribbean grooves can be found here as
usual and we’ll start with some of the hottest pacific
    stuff imaginable, better be there.

For now, Jonah Moyo with one of the older albums in a re-post.
To make you remember, loads of goodies waiting for y’all …

    tracks;

    Juan Polo Valencia, front

    Juan Polo Valencia, back

Yesterday my friend Sanjay paid me a visit in my
little shop, we sat on a juice and a southern pacific
cruise..listened to some of the lp’s he brought for me.
Plenty material to look forward to. I promised to start
with this one by the legendary Juan ( Juancho ) Polo
Valencia. We spoke about the idea of ripping 78’s in
the future. Until today I am unable to record any, not
being in the posession of a 78 turntable. It seems we
are missng out on loads of good stuff from Colombia’s
past from before the 33 era. Who know’s what’s yet
    to come..

Juan Polo Valencia spent his whole life playing and travelling.
He was born in Concordia, ( Magdalena ) Cerro de San Antonio,
september 18th, 1918 and died july 22nd, 1978. The death of his
wife Alicia Maria Hernandez Paes became the inspiration to the song.
‘Alicia adorada’, together with highlites such as Veni Veni, Lucero
espritual, Si si si and Sio sio I added it to today’s album that also
begins with one of his bigger songs called El pajaro carpintero.
The best interpreters of his work are Alejo Duran, Jorge Oñate, Carlos
Vives and Egidio Cuadrado. Listen to the great Juancho Polo Valencia !

    tracks;

    1 El pajaro carpintero
    2 La azucena
    3 Carmencita
    4 Quiereme negra
    5 No puedo aparentar
6 Te vas y me dejas
    7 La pesedilla
    8 El provincianito
    9 Mi sombrero blanco
    10 Se me presentaron dos
    11 La palmarina
    12 La saguas del manzanares

    Bonus tracks;

    13 Alicia adorada
    14 Veni veni
    15 Lucero espiritual
    16 Si si si
    17 Sio sio
