Franklin Boukaka

This is the second album we found by Franklin Boukaka, the
previous one was posted in march 2012. You don’t see them
very often so I suggest you don’t let it slip through your fingers.
On the Pathé Marconi label so quality is certain. Boukaka was
born on october 10, 1940 and assassinated february 22, 1972
only 32 years of age. He was singer, guitarist and songwriter..
In maart 2012 hadden we één van zijn platen en dit is dus de
tweede die we van zijn hand vinden. Vaak kom je ze niet tegen
daarom zou ik willen zeggen, laat hem niet glippen. Op het label
van Pathé Marconi dus kwaliteit verzekerd. Boukaka, geboren
op 10 oktober 1940 werd vermoord op 22 februari 1972, slechts
32 jaar oud. Hij was zanger, gitarist en songwriter..

Various Artists, Years and Labels
Ever since my first encounter with the music from Panama,
I am on the lookout for singles and elpees from over there.
Not an easy job, especially when one lives in Western Europe.
Now I believe in persisting and look, today I can bring you this
little collection of singles and I am very glad to be able doing so.
Some are a little scratchy, hope you’ll enjoy them anyway..
Er is weinig muziek zo moeilijk te vinden als die uit Panama.
Maar zoals gezegd, de aanhouder wint en na enkele jaren
zoeken en struinen heb ik vandaag een bescheiden stapeltje
singletjes voor je op schijf gezet en tot Mp3’s omgetoverd.
Negen stuks waarvan 1 soort van salsa, 2 calypso en zes maal
cumbia Panama style, pak snel en geniet ze deze zomer..

We’ve had albums by Kabaka’s International Guitar Band,
like this one. We had a bunch of records by the Oriental
Brothers of which Godwin Kabaka was also part with his
brothers Dansatch and Warrior. This 1980 release still
sounds very fine, most of time we find them in lesser
condition. Lucky if you’re a lover of Nigerian highlife,
get & spread as usual..
Meestal vinden we ze in mindere staat maar deze uit 1980
doet het nog prima. We hadden al diverse plaatjes van
Kabaka’s Guitar Band zoals deze maar ook een zwik met
z’n Oriental broertjes Dansatch en Warrior. Hoe dan ook,
Nigeriaanse highlife zoals we die graag horen, luister zelf..

Hello groovers, today we’ve got us another sweet mellow album
with Jean Gesner Henry or Coupé Cloué. A name he got as a
soccerplayer in his early days. This one is from 1974 and was
recorded with his Trio Select, it is their fourth record. Coupé
Cloué made a bunch of records, we’ll be back with more..
Alweer zo’n lekker mellow twoubadou plaatje met Coupé Cloué.
Deze stamt uit 1974 en werd opgenomen met zijn Trio Select.
Zeer bekende Haïtiaanse grappenmaker en gitarist, vroeger
voetballer. Maakte vele albums waarvan dit nummer vier is.

not resist. N’Gewel International de Dakar’s music is so wonderful
and atmospheric, astonishing sounds you can’t miss out on..
Noem het onorigineel of kortweg flauw, dit is niet het eerste blog
dat deze plaat brengt. Toch kon ik niet weerstaan hem te plaatsen.
Voor wie hem nog niet had, let op. Voor je’t weet zweef je door de
kamer, vlak onder het plafond en kom je maar met moeite weer
met de voetjes op de vloer. Heerlijk zeilspul uit Senegal..

Pio Leyva – El Montunero de Cuba

Most people just know him from his membership in the Buena Vista
Social Club project. Ry Cooder pulled a range of old Son Montuno
artists from the dust in 1997. Wilfriedo ‘Pio’ Leyva Pascual already had
an impressive career behind him at the time. He was one of the greats
in the field and was also called ‘El Montunero de Cuba’. He was active
as a bongo player since 1923 but first sung in 1932 with Orquesta
Caribe. Pio Leyva sung with artists such as Orquesta Aragón, Beny
Moré, Bebo Valdez, Noro Moralez and with Compay Segundo who
was also member of Buena Vista Social Club. Further he sang with
Marciano Mercerón, Conjunto Caney and Riverside. He died of a
heart attack in 2006, age 89, listen to el Montunero de Cuba..
De meeste mensen kennen hem slechts door zijn rol in het Buena
Vista Social Club project. Ry Cooder trok een keur aan oude Son
Montuno artiesten uit het stof in 1997. Wilfriedo ‘Pio’ Leyva Pascual
had toen reeds een lange carriere achter zich. Hij was een van de
groten in het veld en werd ook wel ‘El Montunero de Cuba’ genoemd.
Sinds 1923 actief zong hij voor het eerst in 1932 in Conjunto Caribe.
Verder zong hij bij Orquesta Aragón, Beny Moré, Bebo Valdez, Noro
Moralez en met Compay Segundo die ook lid was van Buena Vista
Social Club. Maar ook met Mariano Mercerón, Conjunto Caney en
Riverside. Pio Leyva overleed in 2006 aan een hartaanval, hij

Memories of a Master Musician

Henri Bowane was a crucial figure in the developement of Congo rumba
in Kinshasa ( then Leopoldville ) during the early 1950s. He was the first
professional boss and mentor of the legendary Franco, and was a big star
in his own right, releasing dozens of hit 78rpms. In 1960, Bowane became
founder/manager of Ry-Co Jazz, who introduced Congo rumba to countries
such as Sierra Leone, Senegal, Togo, Ghana and the French Antilles. By the
1970s he had settled in West Africa where he recorded this, his first and
only album. The rhythms range from rumba and cavacha through highlife
to calypso and soul/blues. Get it and spread it.. ( liner notes )
Henri Bowane was een beslissende factor in de ontwikkeling van Congo rumba

Bukasa Tsonza Léon was a Congolese composer, guitarist and singer.
Henri Bowane introduced him in the late 40’s to Ngoma music label
where he became a star instantly. This record was made with Bavouéza
Guinot and ‘le Kongo Retro Band’. You can find more of his music at

Bukasa Tsonza Léon was een Congolese zanger, gitarist en componist.
Hij werd eind jaren 40 door Henri Bowane geïntroduceerd bij Ngoma
label en werd daar direkt een ster. De plaat die we hier hebben werd
gemaakt in samenwerking met Bavouéza Guinot en de Kongo Retro
Band. Luister zelf en vind meer van hem onder bovenstaande link..

One of the most famous Congolese rumba bands in the early sixties was
Les Bantous de la Capitale. Founded by former musicians of Orchestre
T.P.O.K. Jazz and Orchestre Rock a Mambo. Members were Alphonse
Ntaloulou, Celestin N’Kouka, De La Lune, Dicky Baroza, Domingo Louya,
Ganga Edo, Jean Serge Essous, José Missamou, Kabako Lambert, Kosmos
Moutouari, Laurent Kabako, Malonga Rikky, Malonga Samuel, Michel Boyibanda,
Mujos, Nino Dieudonne Malapet, Pamelo Mounk’a, Papa Noel, Passy Mermans,
Pouela Dupool, Rikky Siméon, Samba Mascott, Saturnin Pandi.
This slice of 1976 vinyl contains two tracks we’ve seen passing by in
previous posts but is overall new at this page. Fabulous release on the
marvelous Pathé Marconi / EMI label, better don’t miss..
Les Bantous de la capitale was een van de bekendste Congolese rumba bands
in de sixties. Opgericht door voormalige leden van Orchestre T.P.O.K. Jazz en
Orchestre Rock a mambo. Leden waren o.a. Alphonse Ntaloulou, Celestin N’Kouka,
