It was december 2008 when I posted some ‘Compas’, music
from Haiti. One of our loyal visitors from Paris gave
me the hint, I didn’t really know about compas. And after
some searching I found a couple LP’s, like this one. This
album from 1978 is a real treat. To you Arnaud, and to all
Compas lovers around the globe. Tomorrow is another
Recordfair in Utrecht, I intend to come home with
a few treasures, stay tuned..

Papa Noel – Papa Noel Nono, IAD 1984

12 April 2009|Congo|26 Comments

Papa Noel Nono, front

One of the most perfect Congolese albums I have ever heard
is this one by Papa Noel. He was one of the original members
of ‘Les Bantous de la Capitale’. I think his guitarwork on
this LP is simply impeccable. Unfortunately the backsleeve
doesn’t give one line of information about the rest of the
musicians, is that Malage doing vocals ? If anyone can tell
us, that would be great. In the mean time enjoy this
beautiful album.

tracks;

1 Selia Zozo
2 Madiabuana
3 Bel ami
4 Bon samaritain
5 Kizungu-zungu

Rolando La’Serie – La’Serie Otra Vez
Gema 1959

8 April 2009|Canción, Cuba|9 Comments

Rolando La'Serie, front

‘El Guapo de la Canción’ they called him, Rolando La’Serie used
to be percussionist in the original group of Benny Moré.
At first they didn’t think he could sing, but when he scored some
huge hits, he proved them all wrong. This is Rolando’s last
recording on Cuban soil. In 1960, after Fidel’s take over,
he left Cuba for the US where he played with lots of greats.
With ‘Tito Puente’ and with ‘Cortijo y su Combo’ among others.
This LP is with ‘Orquesta Sabor de Bebo Valdes’.

1 Rio Manzanares
2 Que te vas
3 Doña Mariquita

Yesterday evening I met my friend Bebeto in a local bar. He
used to live in Brasil for some 8 years when he was a youngster.
The titelsong of this album has a very special meaning to him,

For that same reason I decided to add a couple more versions as bonus.
Enjoy this Bebeto ! .. and everyone else too ofcourse.

Fantastic Tchico – Amie Clara – Sonafric 1980

1 April 2009|Congo, Nigeria|13 Comments

Tchico, front

Last year I posted three different albums by ‘le Fantastic Pambou Tchicaya
Tchico’ with more or less the same cover as this one. Our friend and collegue
of Worldservice told me these are the Nigeria recordings. This is the last
one in my posession, does anyone know if there are more of them ?
There is something funny about the black and white picture of Tchico
on horseback. At first it looks kinda tough but if you look better
you notice they must have hoisted Tchico on the back of that poor mule.
With his freshly ironed white shirt and trousers he doesn’t really look
like he’s been riding, the immense shoes he’s wearing don’t even fit
in the horse’s stirrups. Maybe not a horseman but a truly great musician,
demonstrated by for one, the Cuban classic El Manicero, the Peanut vender.

tracks;

1 Brothers and sisters
2 Amie Clara
3 El manicero se va

Tante Leen – Successen, His Master’s Voice 1965

28 March 2009|Amsterdam, Jordaan, Netherlands|8 Comments

Last oktober I posted an album by a dear artist from Amsterdam,
the city of my ancestors. Johnny Jordaan is still a hero of the
old days and has sentimental value to me. He used to sing with
this fine lady. Tante Leen and Johnny Jordaan are unforgettable
and there’s even a Johnny Jordaan Plein ( square ). Funny enough
I bought this LP today in Utrecht instead of Amsterdam. The music
is typical for the ‘Jordaan’, an area in old Amsterdam. Music quite
different from what you’re used to find here. Tante Leen had her own
little café where she used to sing for the public, the only day she
didn’t sing was when Ajax played at home. Every fortnight on sunday she
was in the Ajax football stadium cheering for her club.

tracks;

1 Mijn ouwe Amstelstad
2 Oh Johnny
3 Wanneer
4 Ik ben zo verliefd
5 Hand in hand
6 Ik kan vergeten
7 Aan de Amsterdamse grachten
8 Waarom wil je niets meer van me weten
9 De oude straatmuzikant
10 Mijn jongen
11 Kijk mij eens aan
12 Op die ouwe Nieuwendijk

26 March 2009|Bolero, Bolero Cha, Cumbia Guaracha, Mambo|4 Comments

This is not a career album but just a kind of ‘Best of’. Still it’s
a great way to learn about Beny Moré. Haven’t you heard him yet ?
One of Cuba’s highest mail voices, what subtle perfection, I
just love his mambo’s, uuhhh.
