Rochereau Tabu Ley – & l’Orchestre Afrisa
african 1973

2 November 2008|Congo|7 Comments

Tabu Ley, front, cd size

Another Rochereau, this one is from 1973 and that shows.
It seems Tabu Ley is the inventor of the Afro-hairdo, no serieus
he was kind of hip those days, that shirt too. He even recorded
his version of ‘Let it be’ ( Beatles ), not for me that is.
Although it’s quite different from the original and sung in his
own language, I prefer Rochereau’s own songs.
Part from that this is a great album, check it out yourself.

seigneur Rochereau Tabu Ley et
l’African Fiesta vol. 1 – Belle Epoque

31 October 2008|Congo|7 Comments

Rochereau in his young years, what a nice photo is this.
And what a fresh young voice on this LP, can any one tell us
of what year it is ? It’s got 10 songs and takes only 30 minutes,
not a vey common thing. By the way, I made a mistake when I ripped
‘Afrisa International’, some time ago, I switched A and B sides.
Yesterday I re-ripped it and put a new link on that post.
If you have downloaded it, better do it again and delete the
old file. Now listen to Rochereau Tabu Ley’s ‘Belle Epoque’.

Melcochita – con Sabor a Pueblo, Caballos Records 1986

30 October 2008|Son|6 Comments

Son is music from Cuba, but Melcochita takes us to a Colombian
village to preach it. With, Alfredito Valdéz jr., Mario
“papaíto” Muñoz, Mario Hernández, José Mangual and others.
Very sweet and sometimes funny Son.

There’s something going on at the photoscene it appears.
If you take a close look, at first I didn’t notice, you don’t
see the guy without shirt’s left hand.
It looks like he is snatching Melcochita’s wallet.
His friend on the left is looking at it too. In the back,
under the tree, that guy’s eyes look guilty as hell, he
tries to keep his pokerface but he knows what’s going on,
same with the white hat, right side, his looks give him
away too. Now check photo number two, taken two seconds later.
He now shows the wallet behind Melcochita’s back to the white
hat. But this one signals with his right hand to keep it down.
The other guys now also see what’s going on.
Back at the hotel Melcochita finds out his wallet’s gone and
says to the photographer, “strange, some one took my wallet,
it couldn’t have been one of those friendly guys down town,
could it ?”

I had this LP waiting and promised some time now, Pt. 1 was posted

Youssou N’Dour et le Super Étoile
Gaïndé
Saprom 1988

26 October 2008|Mbalax, Senegal|9 Comments

Youssou N'Dour, front, cd size

This casette is from 1988, a little jump through time today
with Youssou N”Dour et le Super Etoile de Dakar.
Number 14 out of 16 African casettes. Although the sound gets less
and less traditional and English phrases start blending in, I think
Youssou’s singing is outstanding on this tape. I love the way he bends
those high notes, what a great voice.

tracks;

1 Gaïndé
2 Bamako
3 Mol
4 Hey you
5 Fenene

Super Etoile de Dakar – Djamil vol. 6, Saprom 1983

26 October 2008|Mbalax, Senegal|16 Comments

Super Etoile de Dakar, Djamil, front, cd size

Second in line is Vol. 6, the line-up on this casette is different
from vol. 1. If any one can help us out here, we see Yamar Thiam
playing ‘Tama’ on vol. 1 and we see Assane Thiam playing ‘Tama’
on vol. 6. Assane we know, is Yamar his brother, or maybe himself ?
Overall, this is a great casette, I’ll quote the ‘Rough Guide’:

“Youssou N’Dour et Super Étoile de Dakar:

Vols 1 – 16 ( local casettes )

N’Dour and his trusted cohorts take Dakar street grooves
with strong Latin retentions to the portals of international
superstar collaboration, via some wild, wacky and continually
surprising routes. Vols 6, 7 and 10 are particularly strong.
Vol 8, heavily remixed, became the ‘Immigrés’ CD. But the music
works best as one extraordinary stream of consciousness.
Most of it is impossible to find, but a multi cd compilation,
planned for 2000, could become one of the great albums.”
( my copy of ‘Rough Guide’ is a reprint of the 1999 edition )

Well, didn’t know I was that lucky, but now you are too.

tracks;

1 Mbarguethe
2 Ferridigua
3 Alboury
4 Djamil
5 Yalla

One last thing, track # 5, ‘Yalla’, takes over 11 minutes
while the tape inlay says 6’39, a minor incident.

Alfredo Gutierrez y su Conjunto – La Cañaguatera, Costeño

22 October 2008|Colombia, Vallenato|15 Comments

This, probably late 60’s, LP by Alfredo Gutierrez was a lucky find
on my last recordhunt. I am a big fan of Alfredo who is one of the
Colombian heroes that made his fame in the legendary ‘Corraleros
de Majagual’. One of the country’s most important Cumbia/Vallenato
bands of the 60’s. Alfredo Gutierrez is one of the great instrumental
virtuosos of Vallenato. Enjoy this music with his pumping bass,
percussion that sounds like they use pots and pans, and ofcourse
the great Alfredo Gutierrez on acordeon and vocals.

tracks;

1 La cañaguatera
2 La choza

the Upsetters – Super Ape, Island 1976

22 October 2008|Dub, Jamaica|9 Comments

the Upsetters, front, cd size

Lee Perry has always been a wizard if we speak about reggae dub.
He was one of the first to mix all kinds of daily noises through
his music. You hear dogs bark, cows moo and baby’s cry.
I always loved this old record, it spent quite some hours on
top of my turntable. Great dubmusic, a classic.

1 Zions blood
2 Croaking lizard
3 Black vest
4 Underground
5 Curly dub
