Guillermo Portabales con Los Guaracheros de Oriente – Sones Cubanos, Gema 1978

19 October 2008|Cuba, Son|22 Comments

Guillermo Portabales, front, cd size

Guillermo Portabales, back

My first encounter with Guillermo Portabales was in 1996, when
this_great_CD_came_out.
He was a unique performer of the ‘Guajira’, a rhythm that is halfway
between ‘Punto’ and ‘Son’. Born in 1911 in Cuba, Cienfuegos,
Guillermo was named the creator of ‘Guajira de Salon’ because he
added melodie and cadence and made it his own.
This album was recorded in 1970 in Puerto Rico with Los Guaracheros
de Oriente, also Cuban. Portabales settled in Puerto Rico and stayed
there until his untimely death on 25th October 1970.
He was hit by a car on leaving a gig at ‘La Palma’ restaurant,
he was 59 years old with a musical career spanning 42 years.

For this once I had to do some colouring on the cover,
it has some ugly stickers and other damage.

tracks;

1 Guanajo relleno
2 Se me fue la montuna
3 Canto a la Vueltabajera
4 Luz que no alumbra
5 Los carreteros
6 Esto se llama montuno

Het Beste van Johnny Jordaan, EMI 1985

16 October 2008|Amsterdam, Jordaan, Netherlands|4 Comments

I use to post ‘music for the people’ of many country’s.
This time I want to introduce a Dutch singer to you, one I
really enjoy listening to. This is typical music from the
Amsterdam neighbourhood, ‘de Jordaan’. The album is from ’85
but the recordings are made between 1954 ( track # 1 ) and
early 60’s. Johnny Jordaan had huge succes late 50’s, his music,
though sung with enormous Amsterdam slang, was played throughout
the Netherlands. I always loved it, something quite different
for once. Hope you appreciate.

Maybe one of you wizzkidz can remove it for us and send it back.

thought you wouldn’t want to miss it anyway, the other 3 songs
