Van de week had ik het over Coupé Cloué en dacht laat ik weer
eens een van zijn platen tevoorschijn halen. Hij verschijnt op dit
album met zijn Trio Select, opvallend is wel dat dit een trio van
acht man is, meestal noemen ze dat een octet. Later zijn ze het
misschien om die reden Ensemble Select gaan noemen. Hoe
dan ook, dit is de vierde die we hebben onder de noemer
Trio Select. We hebben ook nog enkele elpees gewoon
onder de naam Coupé Cloué, luister ..
Last week I spoke about Coupé Cloué and thought let’s pull one
of his records from the shelf. He appears on this album with his
Trio Select, a striking detail is that this trio has eight men, mostly
called an octet. Later they started calling the group Ensemble Select,
maybe for that reason. One way or the other, this is the fourth record
we have as Trio Select. We also have some lp’s under his own name,
just Coupé Cloué. Get, spread and listen ..

In december 2017 kreeg je reeds een voorproefje op deze elpee
uit 1982. Check Reggae Monster originals vol. 6 .
Op Hitbound, een sublabel van Channel One vinden we dit lekkere
plaatje met Welton irie. Geweldige productie van Niney Holmes
met de Roots Radics, Flabba Holt,Style Scott, Bingy Bunny, Dwight
Pickney, Steele, Sky Juice en de Eradication Squad. Deze Hitbound
albums uit de vroege jaren tachtig zijn bij mij zeer gewild. Haal
binnen, deel met je vrienden, luister en huiver ..

with Welton Irie. Wonderful production by Niney Holmes with the Roots

Beth Carvalho – Pandeiro e Viola

Gisteren, 30 april 2019, verloor de wereld en vooral Brazilië
een van de belangrijkste samba artiesten aller tijden. Beth Carvalho
was een legende, zij werd niet voor niets de ‘Godmother of Samba’
genoemd. Zij bracht de muziek van diverse ondergewaardeerde
‘sambista’s’ onder de aandacht van het grote publiek. Na vroege
successen, ze scoorde reeds op 19 jarige leeftijd op de nationale
televisie in Brazilië, wist ze legendarische songschrijvers als Cartola,
Nelson Cavaquinho & Guilherme de Brito onder de spotlights te brengen,
Later, in de jaren 70 en 80 artiesten als Almir Guineto, Jorge Aragão en
Grupo Fundo de Quintal. In 1983 introduceerde zij Zeca Pagodinho
die de grootste sambista van de jaren negentig werd. Na een lang ziek-
bed overleed Elizabeth Santos Leal de Carvalho op 72 jarige leeftijd.
Tot dusver hadden we van haar; Nos Botequins da Vida uit 1977
en de Pé no Chão uit 1978, vandaag haar vierde album
‘Pandeiro e Viola uit 1975.
Yesterday the world and in particular Brasil lost one of the
most important samba artists of all time. Beth Carvalho was
a legend, she was called ‘The Godmother of Samba’. She brought
the spotlight to the music of various under rated ‘sambistas’. After
early succes, she scored on Brazillian national television age 19, she
promoted legendary songwriters such as Cartola, Nelson Cavaquinho
& Guilherme de Brito. Later in the 70’s and 80’s artists like Almir Guineto,
Jorge Aragão and Grupo Fundo de Quintal. In 1983 she introduced Zeca
Pagodinho who would become the major samba name of the 90’s. After
long sickbed Elizabeth Santos Leal de Carvalho passed away age 72.
So far we had Nos Botequins da Vida from 1977 and de Pé no Chão from
1978. Today we have her fourth album ‘Pandeiro e Viola’ from 1975,

Good morning groovers, Angolan records are almost impossible
to find here in the Netherlands. If you find them at all they cost
a fortune so I decided to make a trip to Portugal last year. I had
a great time digging in Lisbon and Porto and was rewarded with
some nice finds. Of course nowadays everybody knows the value
of rare vinyl due to the internet so even in Portugal, being the
former colonist of Angola, you won’t find cheap albums. Com-
bining a record search with a little holiday made it worth
the effort eventually. Today, one of the albums I found,
Conjunto Os Tropicais, from 1971, on Voz
de Cabo Verde, enjoy listening ..

Goeie morgen groevers, Angolese platen zijn bijna onmogelijk te
vinden hier in Nederland. Als je ze al vind kosten ze een klein ver-
mogen dus bedacht ik maar eens in Portugal te gaan zoeken vorig
jaar. I heb me goed vermaakt, crate digging, in Lissabon en Porto
en werd beloond met wat aardige vindingen. Vanzelfsprekend
weet men door sites als Discogs tegenwoordig overal de waarde
van een zeldzame plaat dus ook in Angola’s voormalige kolonist,
Portugal, vind je geen goedkoop vinyl meer. Gecombineerd met
een kleine vakantie bleek het uiteindelijk voor mij zeer de moeite
waard. Vandaag, een van de platen daar gevonden, Conjunto
Os Tropicais, uit 1971 en op Voz de Cabo Verde, luister ..

Laten we nog eens wat van die fijne compas plaatsen, ik kan je
geen zinnig woord zeggen over deze mooie plaat. Op het web
vond ik wel wat vermeldingen van de elpee maar geen info.
Orchestrale compas uit 1972. De hoes vertelt er een klein
verhaaltje bij, leuke prent ..
Let’s have us some more sweet compas today, I can’t tell you
anything useful on this group or this album. On the web I did
find it but no information. It is orchestral compas from 1972.
Its sleeve tells us a little story, funny image ..

Hij werd opgenomen in de Decca studio’s in Nigeria en uitgegeven
op Disc-Orient uit Ivoorkust, deze Congolese prachtplaat met Ringo
Moya en zijn trawanten. Kijk eens naar de line-up, wat een hoop
klasse muzikanten. Alweer zo’n pareltje die mijn Franse kornuit
Aidan mee bracht uit Afrika. De plaat is uit 1983 en verkeert
nog in redelijk goede conditie. Luister ernaar met genoegen ..
P.S. het label en de hoes zijn het niet eens over de
volgorde van de nummers, ik geloof het label.
It was recorded in the Decca studio’s in Nigeria and released on
Disc-Orient from Ivory Coast, this wonderful Congolese record
with Ringo Moya and his buddies. Check out the line-up, what
a bunch of great musicians. Another gem brought back from
Africa by my pal Aidan from France. The album is from 1983
and is still in fair condition. Listen to it with pleasure ..

Typical Combo – “Ban Moin On Ti Femm'”

Yesterday, Holland Tunnel Dive posted a wonderful album with
Typical Combo. On that album from 1975 we find Georges Plonquitte
being the main vocalist. Very nice, thank you Jillem. We also hear
a shout out for more music of Typical Combo. I have five of their
albums but none of them have Georges Plonquitte as singer.
Mostly vocals are done by Hiver Abidos or Daniel Dimba.
Georgers Plonquitte and his sweet cadence we find on later
records with ‘Cie'(compagnie). On this record of Typical Combo,
from 1977, we find both Hiver Abidos and Daniel Dimba but also
Rodrigue. Plonquitte was singer until
somewhere in 1975 if I’m correct.
Gisteren plaatste Holland Tunnel Dive een geweldige plaat van
Typical Combo.Op dat album uit 1975 vinden we Georges Plonquitte
als vocalist. Heel mooi, dank je Jillem. In het artikel wordt tevens
betreurd dat er zo weinig van Typical Combo te vinden is. Ik heb
vijf van hun platen maar op geen van hen is Georges Plonquitte
de zanger. Meestal worden de vokalen verzorgd door Hiver Abidas
of Daniel Dimba. Georgers Plonquitte wordt op de meeste
van zijn latere albums begeleid door ‘Cie’ (compagnie).
Op deze elpee van Typical Combo uit 1977 vinden we zowel
Hiver Abidas als Daniel Dimba maar ook Rodrigue.
Plonquitte zong tot ergens in 1975
als ik me niet vergis.

Hello groovers, at the last record fair in Utrecht I thought
I bought an album by Pat Thomas & Ebo Taylor but when
playing it, it turned out it had another record in the sleeve.
So what did we find ? I took the images from the web, this
is Kwame Nkrumah with Jewel Ackah and their record; Safari
and Classical Highlifes, ‘Yeredi Awu’. Both the lp’s are on Pan
African Records, this is PAR 001 and the one with Pat Thomas
& Ebo Taylor is PAR 004. I’ll try to reach the guy who sold it to
me and maybe get the right one later. For now, enjoy listening
to Kwame Nkrumah & Jewel Ackah ..

een lp van Pat Thomas & Ebo Taylor, althans dat dacht ik. Een-
maal thuis bleek er een heel andere plaat in de hoes te zitten.
..En wat vond ik ? Ik heb de afbeeldingen van het web gehaald,
dit is Kwame Nkrumah met Jewel Ackah en hun album; Safari

Kyeremateng Atwedie & the Kyeremateng Stars

Hey groovers, good morning, are you ready for some great
Ghanaian highlife ? Well, guess what, I found another lp
by the wonderful Kyeremateng Atwedie and his Kyeremateng
Stars. Always a sweet moment when stumbling on a record by
these guys. I love the somewhat nasal voice of Kyei Barfour who
is more or less the steady singer with the group. The record has
this lovely jumpy bass by Wild Ismael and Atakora Manu is
present as well. Get, spread and enjoy listening to the
Kyeremateng Stars. P.S. Please do not tell me
what the title means !
Hi goedemorgen groevers, wat dacht je van wat van die heerlijke
Ghanese highlife vandaag ? Wat denk je wat ? Ik vond weer enkele
plaatjes van de fantastische Kyeremateng Atwedie en zijn Kyeremateng
Stars. Altijd een kick om tegen een van hun albums aan te lopen. Ik ben
gek op de enigszins nasale stem van Kyei Barfour, hij is zo’n beetje de
vaste zanger van de band. De elpee heeft zo’n lekker springend basje
gespeeld door Wild Ismael en ook Atakora Manu speelt een rol. Haal
binnen, deel en geniet van het luisteren naar de Kyeremateng Stars.
P.S. Vertel me alsjeblieft niet wat de titel betekent !

Deze groep jonge muzikanten, althans, dat waren ze nog in 1982,
wanneer ik denk dat deze plaat is opgenomen, brengt met ‘Gran
Moun Kannay’ een twoubadou album vergelijkbaar met de sound
van Coupé Cloué. Gitaar gedreven, mellow, niet pretentieus, lekker
easy. Dit is net wat we nodig hebben op een lome warme dag die
we vandaag zo vroeg in het jaar reeds hebben. Je krijgt gewoon zin
om op vakantie te gaan. Relax met Ensemble Tropical Systeme ..
This group of young musicians, they were in 1982, when I think this
album was recorded, brings with ‘Gran Moun Kannay’ a twoubadou
record comparable with the sound of Coupé Cloué. Guitar driven,
mellow, non pretentious, nice and easy. Just what we need on a slow
warm day that we have so very early this year. It makes you wanna
take a holiday. Relax with Ensemble Tropical Systeme ..
