Rex Jim Lawson was a Nigerian singer and trumpeteer.
He was one of the most popular artists in his days and
beyond. Even today. He was born in 1938 and died in a
car accident in 1971, only 32 years old. He composed his
own songs. He was called Cardinal Rex Lawson and also
Pastor Rex Lawson and played with Bobby Benson, Victor
Olaiya among others. We had some very good Nigerian
highlife over the years, but this album really stands out.
Rex Jim Lawson was een Nigeriaanse tropettist, zanger
en componist. Hij was éen van de populairste artiesten
in zijn tijd en zelfs vandaag de dag nog. Geboren in 1938
en overleden in een auto ongeluk in 1971, slechts 32 jaar
oud. Hij werd Ook wel Cardinal Rex Lawson genoemd of
Pastor Rex Lawson. Rex speelde o.a. met Bobby Benson
en Victor Olaiya. We hadden al heel wat knappe
Nigeriaanse highlife, maar dit album is
één van de beste ..

plaat. Je krijgt de achtergrond geluiden er zo bij. Op

Not much to find on this album, no year of release
for instance. It is said to be a compilation record.
The vinyl looks clean, but sounds a bit dusty. Jean
Serge Essous appears here with les Bantous de la
Capitale. Part from the (pity) noise we find a bunch
of very nice songs, enjoy listening anyway ..
Online vond ik niet veel over deze plaat, geen jaar
van uitgifte bijvoorbeeld. Het moet een compilatie
album zijn. Het vinyl ziet er mooi schoon uit, maar
helaas klinkt hij behoorlijk stoffig. Jean Serge Essous
speelt hier met Les Bantous de la Captale. Buiten
de jammere bijgeluiden vinden we hier een rijtje
vrij mooie nummers. Evengoed dus lekker luisteren ..

Good morning, it has taken some time, but from today the GG
is ready to get back on schedule. I’ve moved to another house
and all my records are finally back from the storage facility and
in my new record room. Very happy with the possibility of having
all the records together. I’ll be posting on a more regular basis
again, stay tuned and tell your friends ..
Let’s start with another record by Haïtian band ‘Bossa Combo’.
It is from 1976 when they were some seven years on the way.
Quite an entertaining record from one of the most popular
groups from that era. Listen with pleasure again ..
Goeiemorgen, het heeft even geduurd, maar vanaf vandaag is
de GG weer terug op schema. Na de verhuizing zijn al m’n platen
weer terug uit de opslag en staan netjes in de nieuwe platenkamer.
Heel blij om alles nu bij elkaar te hebben. Ik zal nu weer met regel-
maat met nieuwe posts verschijnen, blijf erbij en zegt het voort ..
Om te beginnen nog zo’n fijn compas album met ‘Bossa Combo’.
Deze is uit 1976 toen de groep zo’n zeven jaar onderweg was.
Tamelijk onderhoudende plaat van een van de meest populaire
bands uit die periode. Luister weer met plezier ..

Good morning, as I told you, all my records are in storage for a while.
Therefore I am now posting an album from my digital archive. It is one
that was sent to me by a friend. No tags as you are used to find here,
but nevertheless a great record. No year of release is known.
Solid listening with Papa Noel who got his name for being
born on Christmas day 1940 ..
P.S. I think we hear Carlito on track #2.
Goeiemorgen, zoals gezegd zijn al mijn elpees momenteel in de opslag.
Daarom post ik vandaag een plaat uit mijn digitale archief. Deze is me
ooit door een vriend gestuurd, geen tags zoals je hier gewend bent,
maar een heerlijk album. Geen jaar van uitgifte is van deze bekend.
Wat we wel hebben is een degelijke luister ervaring met Papa
Noel die z’n naam kreeg omdat hij is geboren op
Kerstdag 1940 ..

Due to the fact I’m in the middle of moving house you must
miss the posts on a regular basis momentarily. Once in a while
though I shall give a sign of life. Today for instance I want to
post this awesome samba album with Alcione from 1975.
Alcione’s voice is one of the strongest in the field. We had a
couple of her records already and this one ads yet another
to her discography here at the Global Groove,

Wegens verhuizing zit ik momenteel even in de dozen en vind

By the end of the eighties there was a revival of jazzy grooves
on the Brittish ‘Acid Jazz’ label. It released jazz, street-soul, funk,
jazzrap, hiphop, retro-kitch and so. Founded by Gilles Peterson
and Eddie Piller. Later Gilles Peterson started the Talking Loud label.
This is one of the first releases under the name Totally Wired. A bunch
of compilations followed. It was specially made for the Club Dancing
Scene, but we used to play it a lot in our local coffeeshop too. Our
public loved it. soulful, funky jazzy, wild stuff ..
Tegen het eind van de jaren tachtig was er een opleving van jazzy
grooves op het Britse ‘Acid Jazz’ label. Ze brachten jazz, street-soul,
funk, jazzrap, hiphop, retro-kitch en dergelijke. Opgericht door Gilles
Peterson en Eddie Piller. Later richtte Gilles Peterson het Talking Loud
label op. Dit is een van de eerste uitaven onder de naam Totally Wired.

While packing my cd’s for storage as well I ripped this
fine album for you. Jovelina Pérola Negra (the black pearl,
nothing to do with Pirates of the Caribbean) was known by
her deep and powerful voice. Her samba, pagode was rewarded
several times. She died way too young at only 54. Jovelina was
quite late in her succes and couldn’t leave her kids the wealth
she wished for. What a voice, so warm and strong ..
Terwijl ik m’n cd’s aan het inpakken was om ook te verhuizen
heb ik deze nog even voor je geripped. Jovelina Pérola Negra (de
zwarte parel) was geliefd om haar diepe en krachtige stemgeluid.
Haar samba, pagode viel verschillende keren in de prijzen en terecht.
Wat een warme sterke stem. Jovelina stierf aan een hartaanval op 54
jarige leeftijd, veel te jong. Door haar vrij late succes lukte het haar niet
haar kinderen in luxe achter te laten, iets wat ze graag wilde bereiken ..

Hoi, goeiemorgen, nog zo’n sampler komt vandaag jouw
kant op. Omdat al m’n elpees tijdelijk in de opslag staan
een uitgelezen moment om eens wat achterstand weg te
werken. Ik heb er te weinig gemaakt en ontdekte dat er
wat dubbele nummers begonnen voor te komen. Nu
even scherp, terug naar december 2019. Ruim 4 jaar

Due to relocation, all my records have been packed. A huge project,
over 11.000 records in various styles and from many different countries.
Everything well organised, on alphabet and genre. It is an operation that
requires systematic approach. Anyway, the music is going to be stored for
a while, at least till the new place is ready to move in. To fill the gap I’ll
turn to catching up on our Global Samplers for a while. We are still some
five years behind. Today we have volume 93 and some more shall follow.

In verband met verhuizing zijn al mijn platen momenteel ingepakt. Een
flink project, meer dan 11.000 elpees in verschillende stijlen en uit veel
verschillende landen. Alles goed georganiseerd, op genre en alfabet. Het
is een operatie die systematiche aanpak vereist. Hoe dan ook, de muziek
gaat tijdelijk in opslag tot de nieuwe plek klaar is om in te trekken. Om
dit gat te overbruggen ga ik maar eens wat Global Samplers maken, er
valt nog zo’n vijf jaar in te halen. Vandaag nummer 93 en er zullen er
nog wel wat volgen. Je kent de truc, copieer/plak de titel in onze
zoekbalk en vind direct de plaat van afkomst ..

Hij en zijn band brengen een potpourri aan songs uit de jaren
40 en 50, nummers van Jean Serge Essous, Joseph Kabasele,
Camille Feruzi, Pamelo Mounk’a, Rosario Germano en Edo
zelf natuurlijk. Sfeervolle plaat die herinneringen uit
vervlogen tijden oproept ..

From 1981 we’ve got this album with ‘le Grand Edo’, Edouard

Hello, good morning groovers, welcome back at the Global
Groove. The site has been under repair work and re-construction
for a while. Complex digital stuff for which I needed outside help.
Being a noob myself I could do nothing but wait. One way or the
other, we’re back up. Some minor changes are visible, but the
most changes are under its skin. What do we have ?
It was hard to choose a record to open this new phase of the GG.
This album with Ali Baba from France. If I’m not mistaking he is from
Cameroon originally. I remember so well. When this came out in 1984
we really liked it and were happily surprised when they came to play in
the Melkweg (Milkyway) in Amsterdam. Dear Mr. Baba made a mistake
about the Amsterdam public however. He thought everybody would go
bazerk when coming up the stage. In Amsterdam however we are
used to see the most famous and greatest gigs in the world and
it takes a real good performance before the crowd goes crazy.
Ali Baba was deeply offended and didn’t like to do his best
for us. A very disappointing gig as result. Shame and
scandal. His album remained on the shelf a long
time afterwards. We can laugh about it now ..

Hallo, goeiemorgen groevers, welkom terug op de Global Groove.
De site heeft diverse reparatie en reconstructie werkzaamheden
ondergaan en was daarom off-line. Complexe digitale zaken waar een
noob als ik niets mee kan dan wachten tot het klaar is. Hoe dan ook,
we zijn weer on-line. Enkele kleine dingen zijn zichtbaar, maar de
meeste veranderingen zitten onderhuids. Wat hebben we vandaag ?
Het was moeilijk een plaat uit te zoeken om mee terug te keren in
deze nieuwe fase. Dit is er een met Ali Baba uit Frankrijk. Van origine
komt hij uit Cameroon als ik me niet vergis. Ik weet het nog zo goed.
De elpee kwam uit in 1984, we vonden ‘m heel tof en waren dan ook
blij verrast dat ze naar de Melkweg in Amsterdam kwamen. De goede
meneer Baba had zich echter flink vergist in Amsterdams publiek en
dacht dat de zaal volledig uit z’n plaat zou gaan als hij het podium
zou betreden. In Amsterdam zijn we daarentegen wel wat gewend.
De meest geweldige en beroemde acts komen er langs, en er moet
toch echt eerst gepresteerd worden voordat de tent uit z’n dak gaat.
Ali Baba was tot op het bot beledigd en had totaal geen zin meer z’n
best te doen voor ons. Het resultaat, een diep teleurstellend optreden.
Zijn album heeft daarna nog lang in de kast gestaan.
Ondertussen kan ik er om lachen gelukkig ..
