A short post today. From Senegalese band Orchestra Baobab
we’ve got this maxi single from 1978. It contains a song of the
late and great Cuban tres player Arsenio Rodriguez called Juana
and a song composed by Rodolph Gomis called Koura. A 12″
single on Ledoux Records. Hope U like it ..
Een korte post vandaag. Van de Senegalese band Orchestra
Baobab vinden we deze maxi single uit 1978. Hij bevat twee
nummers, eentje geschreven door de Cubaanse tres speler
Arsenio Rodriguez genaamd Juana en een nummer van Rodolph

A well known phenomena in Brazillian music is that artists
tend to cover each other’s songs. Almost without exception
and without scruples. This group is a pure cover band, they
don’t have their own songs but play tunes of others in a
decent way. We had a couple of their records before.
Samba / batucada, nice rhythmic stuff, get & spread ..
Een bekend fenomeen in de Braziliaanse muziek is dat artiesten,
bijna zonder uitzondering, elkaars nummers spelen. Zonder enige
scrupule, men vindt dit 100 % acceptabel. Deze groep is een cover
band, ze spelen uitsluitend nummers van anderen, maar doen dit
op een zeer degelijke manier. We hadden al eerder enkele van

Good morning groovers, today I dug up this album with Oliver
de Coque from Nigeria. He must have been the ‘best dressed
chicken in town’ in his hometown. If you look at the sleeves
no explaining is necessary. Oliver may not have been the most
gifted singer, but his sound and certainly his appearance were
stunning. I have posted a number of his records between 2008
and 2020. Just remembered another two were waiting on the
shelf. I’d say get it and spread it like you use to ..
Goeiemorgen blogvrienden, vandaag heb ik deze plaat met de
excentrieke Oliver de Coque in de kast opgedoken. Hij moet wel
de ‘best dressed chicken in town’ geweest zijn waar hij woonde.
Als je de hoezen bekijkt behoeft dit geen verdere uitleg. Oliver
was misschien niet de meest geweldige zanger, maar zijn sound
en verschijning waren uitzinnig. Ik heb een stapeltje van zijn lp’s
gepost tussen 2008 en 2020. Zojuist bedacht ik dat er nog twee
wachtten. Ik zeg down, deel en luister weer als gebruikelijk ..

On the picture we see Oliver with Chief Stephen Osita osadebe.
The second half of song #3 displays a similar style of performing
as the latter, speaking in rhythm more than singing, I love it ..

Op de foto zien we Oliver samen met Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe.
Het tweede gedeelte van song #3 laat een soortgelijk geluid horen
als dat van laatstgenoemde, sprekend met ritme ipv zingend.
Ik ben een liefhebber van het werk van beide mannen ..

Many of them became world famous. This is a ‘best of’ record
from 1976. You can hear how the players had fun, not recor-

Stars Magnats. Monza debuted with Les Choc Stars in 1985. The
record features local musicians such as Theo Mougemba. Four

Choc Stars in 1985. De elpee is mede gemaakt met lokale muzikanten

Hello, I found out there’s one album with the late and great
Elio Revé and his orchestra which I didn’t post yet. There are
much more, but those are not on my shelf. I just love the salsa
he called ‘Changüí’. Those sweet pitched voices, Elio’s strong
timbales beats, the trombones, just delightful. We had a bunch
before, see the links below. Don’t miss out on this one ..
Hoi, ik ondekte dat ik nog éen plaat met de ‘late & great’ Elio
Revé en zijn orkest op de plank had staan die nog niet gepost
was. Er zijn er nog veel meer, maar die moet ik nog eens tegen-
komen. Ik ben gek op de salsa die hij ‘Changüí’ noemde. De hoge
stemmetjes, Elio’s stevige timbales slagen, de trombones, klasse.
We hadden er al een stel, zie de links hieronder. Mis deze niet ..

It’s been over two years since we had us some ‘benga’ from
Kenya. This album was released by a Nigerian company though
from Apapa. We find Orchestre Ratego Jazz on Agu Iroko Sound.
Funny thing with this type of music, the songs all have names
of people. It seems every track is a tribute to someone. One
way or the other, put on your headphones and let the sweet
benga pamper your eardrums. Get it & spread it ..
Alweer ruim twee jaar sinds we wat van deze fijne ‘benga’
hadden. Deze plaat is uitgebracht door een Nigeriaanse
maatschappij uit Apapa. We treffen Orchestre Ratego Jazz
op dit album uit 1975. Het label is Agu Iroko, uitgegeven
door Mike Brothers & Co. Bij deze muziek hebben de songs
bijna altijd namen van mensen, alsof elk nummer een eer-
betoon aan iemand is. Hoe dan ook, koptelefoons op
en laat de fijne benga je trommelvliezen verwennen ..

Good morning groovers, on this tuesday we find an album
from Benin 1978. Being an amateur, to my ears this type
of music sounds a bit like Nigerian Fuji or Apala. Only vocals
over percussion and rhythmic instruments. An occasional
flute is the only melodious instrument we hear. It appeared
on Albarika Store as ALS 057. Get it & spread it ..
Goeiemorgen groevers, op deze grijze dinsdag vinden we
dit album uit benin 1978. We horen yedenou Adjahoui en
in mijn amateur oren klinkt dit type muziek als ‘t Nigeriaanse
Fuji of Apala. Alleen vokalen over percussie en ritme instru-
menten. Een enkele fluit is het enige melodieuze instrument
dat we horen. Hij verscheen op Albarika Store.

Followers of samba may remember we had a couple of albums
with Genaro and Bebeto di São João back in 2018. Today we
find this record of Bebeto di São João from 1986. It is on CID,
Companhia Industrial de Discos. Bebeto wrote all the songs
together with guys like; Wilsinho Saravá, Zéca Pagodinho
and ZéPaulo among lots of others. Samba/Pagode from
the top shelf. Get it & spread it ..

dat we in 2018 twee platen hadden met Genaro en Bebeto
di São João. Vandaag dit album met alleen Bebeto di São João.
Op het CID label, Companhia Industrial de Discos. Bebeto
schreef de songs samen met figure als; Wilsinho Saravá,
Zéca Pagodinho en ZéPaulo onder vele anderen.

From 1983 and on Albarika Store we find this album with
T.P. Orchestre Poly Rythmo from Benin. Apparently The
group was fond of reggae music and although they didn’t
know how to write it, they played it wonder well. In general
I prefer the real Jamaican stuff, but make an exception for
them today. Sweet stuff from this West African country
preserved for you. Get it & spread it ..
Uit 1983 en op Albarika Store vinden we dit album met
T.P. Orchestre Poly Rythmo uit Benin. Klaarblijkelijk was
de groep gek op reggae en alhoewel ze niet wisten hoe het
geschreven wordt, speelden ze het bijzonder goed. Over het
algemeen prefereer ik het originele werk uit Jamaica, maar voor
deze plaat maak ik graag een uitzondering vandaag. Fijne muziek
uit dit West Afrkaanse land gepreserveerd voor je.

Ever since the Global Groove is active, from 2008, I’ve been
crate digging on fairs and in stores. Every time coming home
with piles of records, sometimes too much to listen. After a
period on the floor, the records found their place on the shelf.
Now I can search in my own collection and find things I forgot
I had them.
Today we find this 50 year old album with Rey Davila.
On ORC, Otoao Record Company from New York. Rey Davila was
born in Puerto Rico, grew up in New York from his 8th
and worked with loads of Latin artists. This record contains
a few renditions of famous songs like ‘Louie Louie’ and ‘Fly Me
To The Moon’. I always fear the worst when reading such titles,
but Rey Davila made them ‘his own’. Check this elpee.

Sinds ik in 2008 met de Global Groove aan de slag ging heb ik heel
wat beurzen en platenzaken afgestruind. Soms kwam ik met dozen
vol elpees thuis, soms teveel om the luisteren. Na een tijdje op de
vloer te hebben gestaan verdwenen ze dan netjes op genre en alfabet
in de kast. Nu kan ik uren zoeken in m’n eigen platenkast en vind ik
dingen waarvan ik vergeten was dat ik ze had.
Vandaag vinden we dit 50 jaar oude album met Rey Davila.
Op ORC, Otoao Record Company uit New York. Als ik het goed heb is
Rey Puerto Ricaan van geboorte en groeide hij van zijn 8ste op
in New York. Hij werkte daar met veel Latin artiesten.
Deze plaat bevat uitvoeringen van bekende nummers zoals ‘Louie
Louie’ en ‘Fly Me To The Moon’. Altijd als ik zulk soort titels lees
houd ik m’n hart vast, maar Rey Davila geeft er z’n eigen draai aan
en maakt de songs ook echt eigen.
