Good morning groovers, let’s dive a bit deeper in the history
of Haïtian compas. Many of you have enjoyed the various posts
we had so far and many records are waiting to yet come your way.
What do we have today ?
It is said that compas was invented by Nemours Jn.Baptiste.
He was a Haïtian Saxophonist, writer and band leader. The music
he made was also called Compas Direct. During Baptiste’s early
career he played in ‘Conjunto International’ with collegue Webert Sicot.
For some time later the two had a kind of rivalry over who
came first with certain styles. Funny detail; the competition
between them resulted in a soccer match between the artists
and their bands which ended in a 1-1 tie. Today we’ve got the
album Ti Carole from 1966. Extra nice are the songs
that include the use of accordeon, enjoy listening ..

duiken in de Haïtiaanse compas. Vele van jullie genieten van
de platen die we tot dusver hebben gezien en veel albums
wachten nog om hun weg naar je te vinden.
Wat hebben we hier ?
Er wordt gezegd dat compas ooit werd uitgevonden door
Nemours Jn.Baptiste. Hij was een Haïtiaans saxofonist, schrij-
ver en band leider. De muziek die hij bracht werd ook Compas
Direct genoemd. Tijdens de vroege jaren van zijn carrière speelde
Nemours in ‘Conjunto International’ met collega Webert Sicot. De
twee werden later een soort rivalen die twistten over wie nu het
eerst met bepaalde stijlen was gekomen. Grappig detail; zij
knokten het op een dag uit door met hun beider bands een
potje voetbal te spelen, deze eindigde in een 1-1 gelijkspel.
Vandaag hebben we het album ‘Ti Carole’ uit 1966, extra
fijn zijn de nummers waarin de accordeon wordt gebruikt,
luister weer met plezier ..

vallenato kampioenen te brengen. Julio de la Ossa is éen
van die pioniers die in mijn ogen deze stijl groot maken.
Wederom een van zijn platen uit 1975, het jaar waarin
hij winnaar werd van het prestieuze Festival de la Leyenda
Vallenata. Luister met plezier ..
As always it is a pleasure bringing the music of Colombia’s
vallenato champions. Julio de la Ossa is one of the pioneers
that made this style of music great to my opinion. Once
again an album from 1975, the year in which Julio became
champion of the prestigious Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata.

Gabi Lunca, (born 1938) is a Romanian singer of urban
lautareasca music. Her father was a very respected violonist,
in the same musical style. Her mother died when Gabi was
very young and this left a major impression on her life. Many
of her songs deal with the ‘mother’ theme. She was married
to the great accordeonist Ion Stan-Onoriu. This record was

De samba van Germano Mathias gaat terug tot in de jaren
50 en 60. Deze plaat is een stuk later uitgebracht, nl. in 1979.
Er zijn er zeer weinig uit deze tijd. Germano is een sambista
uit São Paulo en begeleide zijn muzikanten tikkend op een
dekseltje van een schoensmeer blikje. Speelt op deze plaat
nummers van Jorge Costa (2,6), Tião Motorista (4),
Gilson de Souza (5) en anderen ..
Germano Mathias’ samba goes back to the 50’s and 60’s.
This record however is a rare one from much later, 1979.
He recorded very few in those days. Germano is a sambista
from São Paulo and was known to accompany his musicians
tapping on a lid of a shoe polish can. On this record he sings
songs by Jorge Costa (2,6), Tião Motorista (4),
Gilson de Souza (5) and others ..

This is DCM-407 on the Discomoda label from Medellin, Colombia.
It first appeared in 1967. Tanta Ropa, (so many cloths) seems to be
a joke. The girl on the frontcover was naked at first. In a later sta-
dium they have drawn a little bikini over the picture. Still not en-
tirely comfortable, as if ‘Me Too’ already existed, Discomoda then
re-released the album under the title of the first song, ‘Ambiente
de Guaracha’, with another sleeve. (small pic) Luis Gonzalez, or Lucho,
was the frontman of the group. The record has some background noise,
the salsa however is still quite enjoyable. Get it, spread it and listen ..
Dit is DCM-407 op het Discomoda label uit Medellin, Colombia. De
plaat verscheen oorspronkelijk in 1967. Tanta Ropa (zoveel kleding)
lijkt een spottende titlel te zijn. het meisje op de hoes was oorspronkelijk
naakt maar in een later stadium is er een klein bikini’tje overheen getekend.
Nog niet helemaal comfortabel, alsof ‘Me Too’ reeds bestond, bracht Disco-
moda de plaat opnieuw uit. Nu met de titel van het eerste nummer, ‘Am-
biente de Guaracha’, en met een andere hoes. (zie kleine foto) Luis Gonzales
ofwel ‘Lucho’ was de leider van de band. Het album heeft wat achtergrond
geluid maar de salsa is nog steeds lekker. Down, deel en luister weer ..

Gisteren beloofd, vandaag maar gelijk de koe bij de horens gevat.
Het was een beetje een bevalling, drie keer opnieuw begonnen
omdat het opnemen de mist in ging, eigen schuld, dikke bult.
Wat is het geworden ?
Na wat single dozen door te hebben gespit viel de keuze vandaag
op deze zeven singles uit Panama. De Panamese cumbia is heerlijk
speels en tamelijk anders dan die uit Colombia. Wel zijn enkele
tracks door Colombiaanse componisten geschreven. ‘Cabellos
Largos’ en ‘Mariposita’ zijn van Alfredo Gutierrez en ‘La Danza
Española’ van Gildardo Montoya. Ga er niet voor zitten maar
dans de kamer eens rond met deze ‘Seven 7″
Singles from Panama’ ..
Yesterday promised, today I grasped the nettle. It was a bit
of a job, I had to start over three times cuz I blew the recording,
but that’s my own stupid fault. Let’s see what it became ..
After going through some single boxes the choice was made.
I went for these seven singles from Panama. Panamenian cumbia
is so fanciful and quite different from the Colombian variant.
Some of the tracks were written by Colombian composers though,
‘Cabellos Largos’ en ‘Mariposita’ are by Alfredo Gutierrez and ‘La
Danza Española’ by Gildardo Montoya. Do not sit down to listen
but dance across the room for once with these

time to do so unfortunately. He reminded me completely
justified yesterday. I promise to make time Pete. Another
request he made me was to post European music. Let’s see ..
Ever since I got aquainted with ‘Lautari’ or Muzica Lautareasca,
I started searching for records on Romania’s ‘Electrecord’ label.
Over the years we had several posts with Romanian music.
Today, we find this album on Electrecord with three artists
performing. Romica Puceanu with her velvet voice, Marcel
Budala and his accordeon and Gabi Lunca. Wonderful music
loaded with Romanian emotional gypsie feel. I just love it ..

Steeds dieper duikend in de Nigeriaanse highlife uit de Etsakor
regio vinden we vandaag deze plaat met Professor Richard
Ugiagbe. Hij verschijnt op het Shanu Olu label en stamt uit
1978. De sound van Richard Ugiagbe is niet zo donker als
die van veel stijlgenoten maar helder en toegankelijk.
Veel elpees uit die buurt en tijd zijn slecht en bekrast,
deze daarentegen speelt mooi en klinkt dito ..
Diving deeper in the Nigerian highlife from the Etsakor region
today we find this album with Professor Richard Ugiagbe. It
came out on the Shanu Olu label and is from the year 1978.
Richard Ugiagbe’s sound is not as dark as that of many time
and style buddies but is bright and accessible. Many of the
records from that time and area are in bad state and
scratchy, this one however plays and sounds nice ..

On this album with Los Curramberos de Guayabal we find
singers Adolfo Echeverria, Alberto Pacheco and Anibal Velas-
quez. Gabriel Romero also used to take part in this group
but not on this record. The singers all had extensive solo
careers later. We find Anibal Velasquez singing El Bobo
de la Yuca, by Beny Moré. Other famous songs are
Rosa Maria, La Luna y el Mar, Cumbia del Caribe
and La Banda esta Borracha. I have added a
couple of different versions as a bonus ..
Op deze plaat met Los Curramberos de Guayabal vinden we
zangers Adolfo Echeverria, Alberto Pacheco en Anibal Velas-
quez. Gabriel Romero zong ook met de groep maar niet op dit
album. Ze hadden allemaal een solo carrière hierna. Anibal
Velasquez zingt hier El Bobo de la Yuca van Beny Moré. Andere
bekende nummers zijn Rosa Maria, La Luna y el Mar, Cumbia
del Caribe en La Banda esta Borracha. Ik heb enkele andere
versies als bunus tracks toegevoegd ..
