..remember that sweet calypso 60’s sound ? I think the sixties
were the years calypso tasted best. Lord Melody is here to make
you realise again. We are very lucky with the near mint condition of
this lp. 52 years old and it still spins like new, pure luck I’d say.
It contains some famous songs like ‘Happy Harry’ and off course
the hilarious ‘Wau Wau’. I hope you like it as much as I do,
get it & spread it..

One of the things I’m always struggling with is how
to tell you about the quality of an album. We tend
to use the same superlatives all the time, great,
fine, swell, superb, awesome, words that loose
their true meaning when used too much. Now I
need to tell you how fantastic this lp really is and
don’t have the words. To me, finding an lp like this
one, on Pathé Marconi, from 1973, concerning a
Congolese collector, almost sure it is dynamite.

rounded up a compilation of accordeon music. It goes from
Rumania to Puerto Rico and from the Netherlands to Brazil.
The sound of Squeezeboxes warms us people all around the
world, let’s see how many countries we’ve got here. I gave you

Tchico Tchicaya et le Groupe Kilimandjaro
Soukous Machine, Kilimandjaro Records ltd. 1987
Tchico Tchicaya started in 1970 as a singer in the Brazzaville based
group called Manta Lokoka.
From 1972 to 1974 he was one of the lead singers in Les Bantous
de la Capitale. He occasionally collaborated with influential Zairean
group OK Jazz Band and recorded with le Groupe Kilimandjaro and Tchico
& the Officers. From 1977 to 1979 he stayed in Nigeria where he recorded
4 albums, Afro Festival, Amie Clara, Golden Voice and Méditation.
His nickname was ‘La Voix d’or’ and in that era he sang together with
Lolo Lolita with who he made one of his biggest hits ‘Jeannot’. Tchico
moved tp Paris in 1983. This lp is from 1987 and was made with Jacqueline
Brouta – vocals, Samba Kadhi Bell – backing vocals, Denis la Cloche –
solo guitar, Casanova de Ketchel – rhythm guitar, Remy Salomon – bass,
Denis Hekimian – drums, Lolitta Babind – percussion, Tony – keybords,
Jean-Marie Kabongo – Saxophone and Jean-Claude Léandre on trumpet.
I am affraid you will find dead links on all the older posts for now,

Ryco-Jazz – Fantastique Ryco-Jazz Hit Parade
Ryco-Jazz was founded by Henri Bowane in 1958. The name was
composed from Rythme Congolais, Ry-Co in short. From 1960 to
1964 they toured west Africa and later moved to Martinique where
they were very popular. Their styles varied from tumbele, biguine,
bolero and rumba. Back in Paris in 1971 the group splits up and
spreads. Jean Serge Essous for instance went back to join Les
Bantous de la Capitale..enjoy..

Discos Fuentes 1976
When you take this lp in your hands and look for any scratches,
you won’t find them. Listening to it however I’m affraid we have
to accept some noises towards the end of side-b. Especially
track 11. side-a is clean but is slightly off centre so getting
closer to track 6 it is starting to sound false a bit. Now about
the quality of the music, that’s another story. Take the second
number, ‘El aguacero’ by Anibal Velasquez, I fell in love with
that song straight away, the backing drums are somehow
quite different, I love’m, simply irresistible..

I received the news via two visitors. Thank you

some hot 1989 dance material ? Diblo’s soukous jives like
no other, sparkling guitar work and bubbling basses, tight
rhythms, what else do you need ? His supergroup’s name,
‘Loketo’, means ‘move your hips’ in lingala and I promise,
that is something you won’t be able to avoid.

Wow, now I come to realise, it is almost a year and a half
since I posted us some music from Mali. This one by the
great Super Rail Band will surely make up for that long
hiatus. It is a bit worn out and some noise is inevitable.
..dusty tracks, still, I really love to listen to it, it has
great atmosphere, with Mory Kante from 1977.

On Discos Fuentes we find this swell collector. It’s from
1974 and it has the traditional Fuentes pretty girls sleeve.
You may say, kinda cheap but I like’em a lot. Other than
that it contains some real jewels, another Angel Vásquez
song amongst others. Don’t miss it, Colombian gold..

Today’s contribution starts out a bit crackly but the noise
doesn’t bother much. Canadoes appear on RAS
from Nigeria, it is one of those Ghanaian highlife groups
that went there to get their stuff to sound different.
Two things, always nice to have a little puzzling to do,
label says it’s from 1981 and backsleeve says from 1982.
And then, front cover states it should be LIVE, but
it absolutely does not give me that impression,
what do you think ..?
