Calypso Cavalcade vol. III – Various Artists
Sounds of the Caribbean 1974
Calypso, the infectious rhythms and melodies of the
Caribbean area originated in Trinidad. It is really the
musical expression of the Afro-West-Indian population.
There are various explanations for the origin of the word
calypso, but it’s most likely, that it stems from the African
word ‘Kaiso’, which means ‘bravo’. The lyrics (in dialectic
English) and the melodies are usually made up on the spur
of the moment. The words very often have a double meaning.
The topic is sex, but very often deal with current events of
social and political happenings. The rhythms are enticing
and the songs are therefore popular for dancing.

Conscience – Oyoyo Series IV
Supremedisk 1993
When most people think about the music of Nigeria, the first thing that
comes to mind is probably afrobeat, the darkly funky African jazz stew
popularized by bandleader Fela Kuti, himself a Yoruba from the southwestern
region of the country. Or perhaps they might mention other Yoruba musicians
such as King Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey, the twin pillars of the southwestern
juju style. Maybe their thoughts would glide more towards the eastern extreme
of the country, where Igbo highlife stars such as Stephen Osita Osadebe, read more ..

Beny Moré – Magia Antillana
RCA Victor 1958
with Abelardo Barroso & Rolando Laserie
When driving my car last night, Beny Moré passed by on the
stereo with his great ‘Donde estabas tú’. It made me decide to
post some of his work today. El Barbaro del Ritmo he was called
or El Sonero Mayor. Beny Moré with his legendary voice is here
with this classic album from 1958. It concerns a Mexican release,
the country where he lived for several years. Beny Moré worked
with Miguel Matamoros and Perez Prado among others and gained
enormous popularity singing in various Cuban styles of music, mambo,
son montuno, guaracha, guajira, cha cha cha, canción, Afro-Cuban,
guaguancó and bolero. I have added a couple of famous songs as
a bonus. Enjoy listening to Bartolomé Maximiliano
son montuno, guaracha, guajira, cha cha cha, canción, Afro-Cuban,

Saucy Calypsos vol. 1 – Various Artists
Ice Records 2003
It is only from 2003, but already out of print as far as I can see.
A collector of 14 wonderful calypso’s by various artists. Saucy
Calypso’s as most calypso’s are quite saucy for that is one of
the characteristics of the genre. It got my attention when
listening to track 14, Lord Canary’s Dr. Beckles Clinic.
Such fun to hear how the crowd goes crazy here ..

Jair had vele hits
waarvan ik er enkele als bonus heb
bijgevoegd. Luister zelf ..

Amour Infini Bakutu
Rythmes et Musique 1985
To be frank, I must admit, although I do like some of their
records a lot, I am certainly not their biggest fan. Choc Stars
made some 50 albums. I think the one we find today is one
of their very best. With that outstanding bass, if I’m not mis-
taking by Djo Mali. Real nice 1985 release, their finest days.
It is volume 3 from four ‘Retrouvailles à Paris’ albums, mostly
composed by Bozi Boziana. Enjoy the Choc Stars ..

Merengues vol. 2
Ansonia ALP 1204
Good morning, a follow up on the first volume today. Vol. 1
was posted here 13 years ago in september 2008. Back in those
days I have told some untrue things. I said Dioris Valladares was
from Puerto Rico, he is from Santo Domingo, the Dominican Re-
public of course. I am sorry for the dumb mistake. Various visitors
told me I was wrong, thank you for that. We also found a comment
by Nelson Valladaris, Dioris’ son. (see below) Wonderful to find
your story Nelson, thank you for the great feedback.
Listen to the sweet merengues.
We have several albums yet to post, stay tuned ..
“I’m the son of Dioris Valladares, Nelson Valladares, my Dad was from
Santo Domingo and his music was all orignal from his heart, not for rich
and fame. Fame recognised his talents later on in life. He would be up all
night until the sun rose. Dad composed, played and performed for the
people of all nations an countries, for there enjoyment. He loved people
but most of all through good times and hard times there was always a
song in his heart for someone. He took the worlds pain upon his shoulders
and expressed the folk lore living it playing it through his music. He helped
so many people an never sought credit for it. He would always tell me the
man who is in need and you can help him, do it and God will help you to
help another. That was the real man behind the music.”

Ry Cooder – Ry Cooder
Reprise Records 1970
Every once in a while I tend to post an old record from the
pop shelf. Today is such a day. Always fell for Ry Cooder’s
slide guitar sound. On this 1970 album he appeared with
another of my idols. Van Dyke Parks who does the piano
here, also arranged the one track I used to play a lot,
‘One Meat Ball’. Cooder’s life story and career are quite
extensive. He learned to play from age three,
read his Wiki page and know more ..
Vandaag is

Poly-Rythmo
Djêkê…Small Small…C’est La Nouvelle Danse vol. 1
Editions Sodogil ESL 013
Good morning groovers, what have we got for you today ?
An album with Kilola Salaïka on which we could use some info.
This record was made in Côte d’Ivoire with Orchestre T.P. Poly-
Rythmo. I have seen Kilola Salaïka’s name as Amiral Kilola
Salaïka as a former member of Orchestre Lipua-Lipua in the
video below, and on Innovation vol. 8 with Nyboma & Bovi. I
can be wrong, but I think I hear him singing in Lingala. So,
is Kilola Salaïka Congolese ? He operated from Côte d’Ivoire
on Editions Sodogil. Can anyone shine a
light on this matter please .. ?
Dus, is Kilola Salaïka Congolees ? Hij opereerde vanuit Côte
d’Ivoire en op Editions Sodogil. Kan iemand deze kwestie
ophelderen alsjeblieft .. ?

Les Loups Noirs – Machande Cocoye
Marc Records 1977
As I was told by Leon somewhere in the past, Les Loups
Noirs were known for being one of the most versatile groups
from the Mini-Jazz era. They were most notable in the variety
of textures they used in their arrangements, often switching
roles between solo and accompaniment among the electric
organ, guitar and saxophone. To this day guitarist/bassist
Laurent Ciceron remains one of the authorities on traditional
styles and continues to develop creative ways to authentically
integrate them with contemporary styles. It should also be noted
that, while it isn’t always reflected in the recordings of this era,
most ensembles were expected to play a variety of styles at
the ‘balls’ (dance parties), an evening was not considered
complete without a few boleros, merengues, son montunos,
R&B, or even a selection of ska or calypso
or two thrown into the mix ..
