Richard Patrick Bennettt, better known as Charlie Chaplin
was called after the famous actor since he was young. Many
Jamaican deejays were called after film stars and such in a
later stage. Charlie became popular for his focus on cultural
matters. He worked with Yellowman, Josey Wales, Sly &
Robbie, Henry ‘Junjo’ Lawes, Roots Radics and others.

Goedemorgen groevers, na drie dagen oude Braziliaanse klanken
schakelen we door naar Congo’s jaren tachtig. Geen exact jaar
van uitgifte is hier bekend. Ook weet ik je over Fernand Mabala
weinig zinnigs te vertellen. Ik vond deze plaat in de kast en na ‘m
te beluisteren wist ik het. Dit is een artiest waar ik meer van zou
willen horen. Fijne vokalen, ritmes en gitaren. Al kraakt het wel
een beetje, deze is het waard nog een aantal keren te draaien.
De extra geluidjes zul je hier even voor lief moeten nemen ..
Good morning groovers, after three days of old Brazillian sounds
we turn to Congo’s eighties. No exact year of release is known for
this record. About Fernand Mabala I also can’t tell you anything
useful. I found this album on the shelf and after listening I knew,
this is an artist I would like to know more of. Nice vocals, rhythms
and guitars. Eventhough it has plenty background noise, this is an
elpee worth at least a couple of spins. The extra snap, crackle
and pops you’ll have to accept I’m afraid ..

At the moment I am completely captured by samba from
the old days. We saw Noël Rosa, Ismael Silva and Ataulfo
Alves. Today it is the turn of Mário Ramos de Oliveira, alias
‘Vassourinha’, which means little broom or sweeper. He
started very young and performed for the Brazillian radio
already at 12 years of age. Another historic sambista
who’s songs still sound today. Jump back in time
and listen to Vassourinha ..

We zagen de afgelopen dagen reeds Noël Rosa, Ismael Silva
en Ataulfo Alves de revue passeren. Vandaag is de beurt aan
Mário Ramos de Oliveira alias ‘Vassourinha’, hetgeen bezem-
pje betekent. Hij begon zijn muzikale carrière reeds zeer jong.
Op z’n taalfde trad hij al op voor de Braziliaanse radio. Nog
zo’n historische sambista wiens nummers ook

Terug in de tijd van Noël Rosa en Ismael Silva vinden we
een ander groot liedjesschrijver uit Rio. Hij werkte daar sinds
1927. Ataulfo Alves schreef vele nummers die tot de dag van
vandaag door bewonderaars worden gespeeld en gezongen.
We hadden in november 2018 al eens een plaat met daarop
twaalf van zijn hits. Vandaag een album uit 1967 waarop nog
eens tien prachtige tracks. Hoop dat je ze waarderen kunt ..
Back in the days of Noël Rosa and Ismael Silva we find another
great composer who worked in Rio. He moved there in 1927,
age 18. Ataulfo Alves wrote many songs that are still being
played and sung by his admirers on present day. We had an
album with twelve of his hits in november 2018. Today one
of his records from 1967 on which another ten nice tracks.

Ik ontving een reactie op m’n Noël Rosa compilatie van
blogvriend Ian en ben weer eens terug gaan kijken en
luisteren. Één van Noël’s muziek vrienden was Ismael
Silva welke ook in de prachtige film over Noël Rosa een
belangrijke rol speelt. Deze plaat was origineel uit 1973.
Dit is er de cd versie van uit 2004. Liefhebbers van oude
samba kunnen hierbij het hart ophalen. De samba’s met
Ismael Silva en zijn fragiele stemgeluid zijn buitengewoon
fijn en nemen je mee terug naar de tijd dat Rio de Janeiro
nog Guanabara heette .. luister met plezier ..
I recieved a reaction on my Noël Rosa compilation by our
blogfriend Ian and went back to look and listen. One of
Noël’s music friends was Ismael Silva who also appears in
that marvelous movie about Noël Rosa and played an im-
portant role in his life. This record was originally released
in 1973 and re-issued on cd in 2004. Lovers of old samba
can really enjoy listening to this one. The samba’s with
Ismael Silva’s fragile voice are a real treat and take you
back to the time Rio de Janeiro was still called Guanabara.
So, enjoy listening to Ismael Silva ..

tres player, composer and bandleader Arsenio Rodriguez.
August 31, 1911 – December 30, 1970.
During the 1940’s there was rivalry between the Conjunto’s
of Arsenio and Antonio Arcaño. The album we have today
was a kind of battle between the two. Side one covers five
songs with Arsenio Rodriguez’ Conjunto and side two five

Ik kreeg gisteren de smaak weer te pakken met die fijne
Oliver de Coque plaat. Meestal doe ik het niet maar voor
de gelegenheid nog eentje vandaag. In 1988 nam Afrodisia
dit album op in de Verenigde Staten van Amerika. Samen
met Ogene Records brachten ze hem uit. Hij heeft wel wat
krasjes maar speelt toch nog lekker. Special thanks gaan
o.a. uit naar King Sunny Adé en Chief Commander Ebe-
nezer Obey. Ik weet niet waarvoor, weet jij het ?
Yesterday I really got in the mood with Oliver de Coque
and that fine record. It is not my habbit to do another
straight away but for the opportunity an exception.
In 1988 Afrodisia recorded this album in the United
States. They released it together with Ogene Records.
It has a few scratches but still plays okay. Special thanks
go out to King Sunny Adé and Chief Commander Ebenezer
Obey among others. I have no idea for what. Do you ?

It has been over nine years since we had us an album with
Oliver de Coque and his Expo ’76 Ogene Sound Super of
Africa. Today he returns here at the Global Groove in this
last week of 2020. His real name was Oliver Sunday Akanite,
he made some 93 records. de Coque was taught to play
guitar by a Congolese named Picolo when still very young.
He also was one of the musicians who played on Prince
Nico Mbarga’s famous ‘Sweet Mother’ album. Oliver de
Coque was called Oliver de Coke, Oliver de Fanta,
Messiah of Ogene or Oliver de Identity
(one of his greatest hits)
Het is alweer meer dan negen jaar geleden dat we een van
zijn platen hadden. In deze laatste week van 2020 is Oliver
de Coque and his Expo ’76 Ogene Sound Super of Africa
terug bij de Global Groove. Zijn echte naam was Oliver
Sunday Akanite, hij maakte zo’n 93 albums. de Coque
leerde al op zeer jonge leeftijd gitaar spelen van een
Congolees genaamd Picolo die in Nigeria woonde.
Hij was ook een van de muzikanten op het beroemde
‘Sweet Mother’ album van Prince Nico Mbarga. Oliver
de Coque werd ook wel Oliver de Coke, Oliver de Fanta,

Remember Captain Muddy Ibe ? With his Igbo highlife group
the Nkwa Brothers System he made some nice albums. This
one comes from 1981, is a little bit crackly and side two sounds
quite messy. Still, the music is interesting enough to go through
this. I hope to find a better copy some fine day. Until then we’ll
have to settle with this one. Listen and make up your own mind ..

Herrinner je je Captain Muddy Ibe nog ? Met zijn Igbo highlife
band the Nkwa brothers System maakte hij een aantal mooie
platen. Deze is uit 1981, enigszins krakerig en kant twee klinkt
rommelig. De muziek zelf is daarentegen interessant genoeg
om er eens naar te luisteren. Ik hoop op een mooie dag eens
een betere versie te vinden. Tot die tijd moeten we het
hiermee doen. Luister en kijk wat jij ervan vindt ..

Vandaag, beste groovers, is het weer eens tijd voor muziek
uit Cuba. Zoveel prachtige klanken van dat zonnige eiland.
Één band waar ik al jaren gek van ben is toch wel deze. Elio
Revé Matos en zijn Orquesta Revé speelden een soort salsa
stijl die ze Changüi noemen. Op deze plaat uit 1990 staan wel
wat nummers die ook op andere van hun albums voorkomen
maar dat mag de pret niet drukken. Alles wat ik van ze tegen-
kom post ik blind. Heerlijke sound .. Luister met plezier ..

Today, dear groovers, it is time for some music from Cuba
again. We found so much wonderful stuff from that sunny
island. One group I cherish in particular is without any
doubt this one. Elio Revé Matos and his Orquesta Revé
made a kind of salsa they call Changüi. This record contains
a few songs we’ve heard on other albums also, but that can’t
spoil the fun. Everything we find from these guys is posted
without hesitation. Great sound .. listen and enjoy ..

Guillermo Buitrago only grew to be 29 years of age when he died.
It has always remained a mystery exactly what kind of sickness he
suffered from. His parents had seven children of which five died
before their thirtienth. Guillermo was one of them. Guillermo Bui-
trago was one of the most successful Colombian composers of all
time. He wrote a number of hits which are still being played today,
especially during Christmas time. Numbers like La Vispera de
Año Nuevo, Grito Vagabundo, Ron de Vinola and Dame tu
