Altijd een moment van opwinding als je tegen een lp aan loopt
van een van je favoriete bands. Dit is er zo eentje. Kyerematen
Atwede met zanger Baffour Kyei scoort hoog op mijn wenslijst.
Op deze plaat wordt hij dan ook nog eens vergezeld door mijn
favoriete Ghanese gitarist, Eric Agyemang en geässisteerd door
Atakora Manu. Uit 1983 en op Ambassador is dit weer een sterk
staaltje highlife, opgenomen in de Kumasi studios. Ik zou dit
album zeker niet links laten liggen als ik jou was..
Helaas heeft de b-kant wel wat
achtergrond gerommel.
Always a moment of exitement when walking into another
record by one of your favourite artists. This is such an album.
Kyerematen Atwede with singer Baffour Kyei is on top of my
wishlist . On this fine lp the group is accompanied by one of
my favourite Ghanaian guitarists, Eric Agyemang and assisted
by Atakora Manu. From 1983 and on Ambassador, this is
another great piece of highlife, recorded in the Kumasi
studios. If I were you, I would not ignore this one..

Een van de voornaamste vertolkers van de liedjes van Rafael
Escalona was zonder twijfel Bovea met zijn Vallenatos. Dit is
volume drie van zo’n serie. Hij is uit 1988 en op het Tropical
label. De band wordt begeleid door niemand anders dan
Colacho Mendoza op de accordeon, heerlijk spul dat je
niet zou willen missen, en jij al helemaal niet Pim.
One of the main interpreters of the songs of Rafael Escalona
was without any doubt Bovea and his Vallenatos. This is volume
three of such a series. It is from 1988 and on the Tropical label.
The group is accompanied by the great Colacho Mendoza and
his accordeon, very delightful stuff you don’t want to miss.

Pacho Galan tot Adolfo Echavarria en Tony Zuñiga. Er
staan nummers in diverse stijlen op dit plaatje. Met
en zonder trekzak, orchestraal en minder complex,
van alles wat. Enkele dikke hits passeren de revue.

Various veterans are passing by, from Pacho Galan to
Adolfo Echavarria and Tony Zuñiga. This album contains
songs in some different styles, with or without squeeze-

Ook uit 1977 is deze lp welke wel in top conditie verkeert.
Het is de tweede plaat uit Burkina Faso die hier verschijnt.
Hamidou Ouedraogo was een complete verrassing voor me toen
ik hem voor het eerst hoorde in de stijl die wat doet denken aan
die van Ali Farka toure. Heerlijk relaxte muziek voor de
zondagmiddag. Burkina Faso heette nog Opper Volta in die
tijd, vandaar de titel ‘le Chanteur Voltaïque
et sa Guitare “Yamaha”. Luister zelf..
From 1977 as well but in mint condition is this nice record.
It is the second lp from Burkina Faso that appears here at the
GG. Hamidou Ouedraogo was a complete surprise to me when I first
heard his music. It has a sound that makes one think of the style
of Ali Farka Toure a little bit. Very delightful and laid back
music which is ideal for your sunday afternoon. Burkina Faso
was still called Upper Volta in those days which explains its
title ‘le Chanteur Volaïque et sa Guitare “Yamaha”. Listen..

Les Ambassadeurs du Motel de Bamako vol. 1

We hebben tot nu toe reeds zo’n vijf van hum albums gezien.
Telkens in veranderde samenstelling en uit verschillende
periodes. Dit exemplaar is uit 1977 en met Salif Keita en
Ousmane Dia als front zangers. Hij kraakt en knispert wel
een beetje maar dat mag de beleving er toch niet minder
op maken. Ik hoop op een mooie dag een betere versie
te vinden, tot die tijd, geniet van dit Malinese oudje..
We had some five of their albums so far here at the GG.
From different periods and in different line-ups. The one
we have here today is from 1977 and presents Salif Keita
and Ousmane Dia as lead singers. I must say it does have
some snap, crackle and pops but that can’t spoil the
nice atmosphere. I hope to find a better copy some
day but for now..enjoy this Malinese oldie..

Vandaag, beste muziekvrienden, heb ik iets speciaals voor je.
Zanger Gesner Henry die later als Coupé Cloué bekend stond
op een van z’n eerste plaatjes met Trio Select. Een stukje Twou-
badou uit Haïti zoals we dit het liefst hebben. Zeer ontspannen
geluid, twee gitaartjes, een staande bas en klein ritme ernaast.
Ik ben er dol op, jij mag zelf zeggen wat je ervan vindt..
Dear musicfriends, today we’ve got us something quite special.
Singer Gesner Henry who we know as Coupé Cloué in a later
stage on one of his first recordings with Trio Select. A piece
of twoubadou from Haiti the way we like best. Very mellow
sound, two guitars, one double bass and some small
rhythm on the side. I love it, you can
make up your own mind ..

“Legend has it that Jean Gesner Henry (1925-1998) went from a career in professional football (soccer) to one as a singer/guitarist. I wrote “legend has it”, because it seems unlikely that there was a professional football league at the end of the 1940’s or in the early 1950’s in Haiti.
Jean made a name for himself as a ‘no-nonsense’defender, which earned him the nickname of Coupé Cloué (“cut and nail down”).
Six years after his first musical steps he started Trio Crystal, which later evolved to Trio Select and, in the early 1970s, into L’Ensemble Select.
He became quite popular too in West Africa, where he was sometimes compared to Franco. A comparison based on his sometimes rude (spoken) lyrics and on his typical guitar style.”

Houd je van lekker vreemd instrumentaal getrommel
en geblieb ? De meester op dit terrein was begin jaren
tachtig zonder twijfel Adrian Sherwood. Hier hebben we
nog zo’n sterk staaltje bizarre geluiden, congas, bongos,
friction drums, fish, cabassa, keukenpannen, basgitaren,
keyboards, chinese luit, elektrische percussie etcetera..
Do you like some nice and weird instrumental drumming
and blieping ? Absolute master in this territory was early
eighties without doubt Adrian Sherwood. Here we have
another fine example of bizar sounds, congas, bongos,
friction drums, fish, cabassa, kitchenpans, bass guitars,
keyboards, chinese lute, electric percussion etcetera..

Vanwege de reeds besproken en broodnodige variatie
krijg je vandaag weer eens wat samba. Genaro was een
goede vriend van Bezerra da Silva, als je zijn naam in onze
zoekbalk intikt vind je vanzelf de platen die ze samen hebben
gemaakt. Dit type samba is mijn favoriete durf ik wel te zeggen.
Het blinkt uit door eenvoud, slechts basis instrumenten, alles
akoesties, precies goed dus. Als je er van houdt, klasse spul..
Por causa da variação hoje te dou mais um pouco de samba doce.
Talvez que você ja sabe, o Genaro era um bom amigo do Bezerra
da Silva. Se coloca o seu nome no lugar de procura na mão esquerda
vai achar os discos feitos juntos automatico. Esse tipo de samba é aquele
que gosto muito. Ele brilha por causa da simplicidade, só instrumentos
basicos, tudo acústico, precisamente bom. Se gosta, não deixa..
For the sake of vatiety today another piece of sweet samba. As you
may know, Genaro was a close friend of the great Bezerra da Silva. They
made a couple of records together which you’ll find ticking his name in
our search bar on your left hand side. This is the type of samba I like best,
it excels with simplicity, just basic instruments, all acoustic, exactly right.
If you are into this type of music, don’t hesitate and get it straight away..

Uit Mali hebben we vandaag een schijf van jelimusolu
zangeres Oumou Kouyate. De eerste op haar naam
die hier langs komt. Uit welk jaar hij komt heb ik niet
kunnen vinden, misschien weet een van jullie het. De
plaat opent met een killer track die me direct over de
streep trok hem te plaatsen. Luister zelf..
Another great voice from the jelimusolu from Mali is her’s.
Oumou kouyate appears here first time with five tracks.
Lassissi and Sacodis arranged this recording, the year of
release is not quite clear. The lp opens with a killer track
which pulled me over the line of posting this album.

Eerlijk gezegd dacht ik dat ik deze al eens pepost had maar
kennelijk heb ik me daarin vergist. Toen ik Rik’s verhaal gisteren
las ben ik de platenkast in gedoken en vond er nog enkele die
jullie nog niet bereikt hadden. Thomas Mapfumo en zijn Blacks
unlimited hebben er nog al een paar geproduceerd dus er een
missen was niet heel moeilijk. Deze is dus voor jou Rik maar
de rest van de wereld mag hem ook beluisteren hoor. Voor
de liefhebbers wacht er nog wel eentje dus laat maar horen.
It’s been a while and to be honest I thought it had been posted
already somewhere in the past. It seems it hadn’t however so
here it is today. Thomas Mapfumo and his Blacks Unlimited
made quite a few records so it wasn’t difficult to miss one.
When I read Rik’s story yesterday I went for a quick search
in the record cupboard and found a few left forgotten.
This one is for you Rik, any one else can down it as well
of course. For lovers of the genre there should be
another so just let me know okay..

Je kunt mij beter nooit te serieus nemen hoor. Ik loop hier ook
maar een beetje te dollen met wie er maar gevoelig voor is. Ik
meen het wel als ik zeg verbreed je horizon en luister ook eens
naar muziek waarvan je eerst denkt, dat is niks voor mij. Neem
nou deze Felix Morales en zijn Orchestra Capri, een club muzi-
kanten waarvan ik zeg, die snappen het. Alles in balans, niets te
veel of te weinig. Met Ismael Quintana, Adalberto Santiago, Vitin
Aviles en Pete ‘Conde’ Rodriguez slechts in het achtergrond koortje.
Dukie Gonzalez doet de lead vocalen, Charlie Rodriguez op de tres,
ik noem er zomaar een paar. schitterende arrangementen, niet te
missen dit spul. En pietsie achtergrond geluiden maar net
niet te veel gelukkig, pak het en geniet ervan zoals ik..
Better don’t take me too serious folks, I’m just fooling around with
whoever wants to be fooled around with. I do mean it when I say
broaden your horizon, without wanting to hurt anybody’s feeling.
Take this album of Felix Morales and his Orchestra Capri, a bunch
of musicians who knew what they were doing. Everything is in
perfect balance, nothing too much or too little. Ismael Quintana,
Adalberto Santiago, Vitin Aviles en Pete ‘Conde’ Rodriguez just
being background vocals. Dukie Gonzalez taking care of the lead
vocals, Charlie Rodrigues on tres, just naming a few. astonishing
arrangements, don’t miss. Shame about a little background noise
on this fine record, but not too much, enjoy listening..

De plaat van vandaag is voor mensen als Pim en Glinka
maar vooral voor Rik. De eerste omdat hij expliciet heeft
gevraagd om een wijf in bikini op de voorkant. De tweede
omdat deze nodig eens zijn horizon zou moeten verbreden
en de derde omdat hij een liefhebber is van variatie en naar
allerlei soorten muziek luistert met veel plezier, net als ikzelf.
Lucho Campillo en Policarpo Calle hebben niet alleen de meest
prachtige namen, hun groep ‘el Conde y su Corte’ komt voor de
dag met dit heerlijke stukje Colombiaanse Porro en dergelijke.
Alles klopt aan deze plaat, lekkere sound, lekkere stemmen,
en ook nog een lekkere meid op de hoes, typisch global
groove topmateriaal dus, kortom luister maar snel..
Today’s record is specially for people like Pim and Glinka
but mostly for Rik. The first because he asked explicitly for one
with a girl in bikini at the frontsleeve. The second because it
is hightime to broaden his horizon and the third because he is
a lover of variety and listens to all kinds of music with pleasure
just like I do. Lucho Campillo and Policarpo Calle don’t just have
beautiful names, their group ‘el Conde y su Corte’ appears here
today with this delightful piece of Colombian porro and such.
Everything about this record is right, great sound, great voices
and a pretty girl on the frontsleeve to complete the picture.
Typical global groove topmaterial in short, get it and
listen quickly, you won’t regret..

Om te beginnen, het spijt me zo voor degenen die slechts één
soort muziek kunnen waarderen. Variatie is alles in het leven
en verandering is wat ons op gang houdt, het is onvermijdelijk.
To start with, I’m so sorry for those who fancy one kind of music
only, for variety is the spice of life and change is everything
to keep us alive. It is inevitable.
Ik heb deze band altijd zeer serieus genomen, zoveel geweldige
artiesten speelden erin. Lisandro meza, Calixto Ochoa, Tony Zuñiga,
Eliseo Herrera, César Castro om er maar een paar te noemen. En dan
komt er zo’n nummer langs met Donald Duck stemmetjes, da’s even
schakelen maar toch, tja, de rest is gewoon weer fantastisch. Het blijft
een wereldband dus zullen we ze die grap maar vergeven. Luister zelf
maar, los Corraleros de majagual kunnen toch niet stuk..
I always took this band very serious, so many great artists played in it.
Lisandro meza, Calixto Ochoa, Tony Zuñiga, Eliseo Herrera, César Castro,
just to name a few. And then they appear with such a strange song with
Donald Duck voices in it. That was a moment of doubt, but then, what to
say, the rest of the album is just as fantastic as before so I guess we’ll
excuse them for making a joke. They remain a group of world class.
Listen yourself, los Corraleros de majagual are still marvelous..

Benga is zulk aanstekelijk spul, ik kon er niet omheen.
Dus schop dat meubilair nog eens opzij en laat je gaan.
East Africa gets its turn today, benga is such contageous
music, there was no way around it. Seven 45’s in a row
as we did before at this page works perfect and make a
solid listen. So kick aside your funiture once again and
let yourself go..enjoy..
