You are the lucky one this weekend Thiol, I found it not so
very long ago. Another African Brothers album to get closer
to completion of their list of releases some fine day. How
many do we still have to find ? I wouldn’t know, I do know
the next big recordfair is on my doorstep. November 22 and
23 we’ll have us another opportunity to dig the crates and
boxes of hundreds of recorddealers from various countries.

What can I say ? You know I’m a lover of this type of
music. I could keep annoying you with superlatives
concerning this album but I really think it’s best if you
listen first and make up your own mind about it. Can
you tell us who you see on the frontsleeve ? I am sure
about two or three myself, how many do you know ?
By the way, this is an original old yellow Fuentes
label on a very thick and heavy slice of vinyl, wow..

This samba collector contains songs by some of the best
sambistas ever. Part from Marquinhos Satá, all the artists
have at least a couple of albums here at the GG. Check
them by using our search-bar on your left hand side. I guess
I can safely say I like all the songs on this fine lp. The artwork
is another factor that stands out to my opinion, very tasteful
and just the way I like it. Did you know samba sometimes goes
accompanied by matchbox rhythms ? When played in the street
and when there’s no backing musician available the singer just
taps his fingers on the box to create his own rhythm, very
soft and subtle. It is not a thing you can find on this here lp
though, all songs here are amplified as you may expect.

Good morning groovers, once again I find out through a comment
that our former host, blogger, has thrown away one of our precious
old albums. It concerns a very nice lp by the great African Brothers.
The Best of Kwame Ampadu used to be on my blog long time ago.
It is another surprise to find it gone but no worries, every time you
come up with a disappeared album, I’ll re-post it and this time it is
going to stay here. So enjoy this rarity and pass it on..

It is almost six years ago I posted this lp by Ousmane
Diallo aka Ouza Diallo or Ouza. Delightful seventies Dakar sounds,
atmospheric stuff. It’s been quite a while we had us some Senegalese
music, better get it and realise I do not post this type of music enough.
Maybe if we find a bit more in the future, the next big recordfair is almost
arriving, another three and a half weeks and who knows what it shall
bring us this time. For now, listen to these beautiful songs
sung by these beautiful voices, I’m completely
captured, # 4 is my favourite..

There was a time I would never have believed an album with
such a cheap sleeve, naked girl and all, could be a good one.
Nowadays I know better. Au contraire, after collecting this
type of music some years I started loving them. The record
we have here is just what we like to find, thick carton sleeve,
heavy vinyl inside and luckily in good shape. It is from 1976
and contains a load of brilliant tracks, these cumbias are
sweet without exeption, just the way we love them, well
produced and compiled with passion. Get & Spread..

Last week I received a mail by one of our loyal visitors from Glasgow,
Scotland. He made a wonderful tribute to the great John Peel as a
contribution to our page. It is nice to pass the mic for a change,
ladies and gentlemen, I give the word to
William, the Jukebox Rebel..
Hello groovers, warm greetings from Glasgow where
there are many music nuts just like Moos.
I say THANK YOU to my host for helping to keep all these wonderful
global grooves alive over the years – and for giving me a chance
to share my mix-tape with you today. It’s a special tenth anniversary
commemoration for the incomparable DJ of the World, John Peel.
Of all the Peel eulogies since 2004, Billy Bragg said it best when he
astutely surmised: “Throughout his career, John Peel defined independent
music. Although he became an institution at the BBC, he was, in effect,
running his own pirate radio station from within the Corporation,
introducing us to music that could not be heard on any other radio show.”
I listened to his nightly shows regularly from 1983 until his untimely
death from a heart-attack on 25th October 2004, taping highlights and
then following them up by purchasing the LP or CD whenever possible.
During the course of his shows, John Peel brought the Planet closer
together, with a weird and wonderful mix of all that was musically
interesting – there were no borderlines in his musical world.
He imbued me with a passion for musical adventure and opened my eyes
and ears to the richness of the artists from all around our planet –
and I could safely say that he is the main reason that I’ve ended up
following the crazy Dutchman on this website.
Most of the selections on this compile were actually featured in the
John Peel show at some stage – and I feel sure that the few exceptions
would also have done so, were they to have landed on his doorstep or
in his time zone.
I hope you can join me for this ’round the world celebration.
Long live John Peel – the original, independent global groover!

to start with. At least two other volumes await their turn.
Indeed we are dealing with three Kings in this perspective.
Alejandro Durán, Luis E. Martinez and Andrés Landero
are three of my idols all together, whenever I find an album
by one of them, it really makes my day. Take this series,
I found three of them so far but I promise to do what I can
to discover the others as well. I would very much appreciate
you leaving me a short message, after all that is all I have
to go on. It appears that the people who download african
music leave more comments then the people that download
latin music. Is it a language matter? You people from South
America do understand some English don’t you? Wether you
do or don’t, give me some feedback so I know Colombian
music is also appreciated. One way or the other,
I am a huge fan of these guys, hope U like it 2..

One of the Ghanaian Bands that has the most fans here at
the Global Groove is Obuoba J.A. Adofo and the City Boys
International Band. We had some five of their albums until

The lp we have here today is one you’ll treasure for sure. It
rocks from the first notes entering your earhole, enjoy..
P.S. They used to call him the black Chinese, now I’m not sure
if the term ‘the living saint’ refers to Obuoba Adofo, or not..

Alfredo Gutierrez y sus Estrellas –

Today’s contribution is a real rarity, Alfredo Gutierrez’ Estrellas
appear among others with Lucho Perez on this slice of vinyl.
Lucho Perez, sometimes also ‘Lucho Argain’, is famous for his
work with la Sonora Dinamita, Los Corraleros de Majagual,
la Sonora Barulera and others. His voice is one every Colombian
recognizes and belongs to the most adored. I have added a few
bonustracks with Lucho for you to remember his great work.
He is to be heard on tracks; 1,4,5,7 and 11 of the album and
bonus, 13, 14, 15 and 16.
Other guest singers here are Edilberto Benitez, Carmelo Barraza
and Danuil y Carmelo. Alfredo himself is not to be forgotten as

When you don’t look good, at first it seems we have
another album by the famous Oriental Brothers. But
no, it isn’t. These are the Continental Brothers from
Owerri, also Nigerian, from the same area if I’m not
mistaking, comparable style but different guys. I did
not find any useful information on this band, they are
as it’s called ungooglable, not one searching result.

Self Titled, Carrizal
His vallenato belongs to the best I know, Colacho Mendoza
passed by here on various occasions and I’m happy to bring
you another of his works. He appeared with los Inseparables
one time and this is the third album with his own Conjunto.

I know that only a select group of our visitors listen to vallenato,
it is a type of music you must learn to listen to, it took me some
time too but now I am completely sold and crazy about it, give
it another try and pass it to your buddies, enjoy..

Discotheque 72 – Various Artists

When this lp came out in 1973 I was 15 years old and had no
idea of this music existing. I was listening to English and Ame-
rican popmusic, maybe some blues.. It took another five years
before the first African, Caribbean and South American music
came through to us. Fortunately we are looking at a much
broader spectrum of sounds and styles nowadays, the world
wide web is a huge support in that perspective. Listen to this
wonderful slice of Guinée vinyl, which is in great condition,
even after 41 years. It’s got some pops though in the middle of
track #3 and at the end of track #6, a small pressing error.
In this series we already had the 1970 and the 1973 versions.
