He was here on two earlier occasions, Alberto Montiel with

Een keur aan artiesten op deze prettige verzameling sambas.
Het is een carnavals project uit 1976 met voor mij veel onbekende
zangers en zangeressen, alleen Oswaldo Nunes was me bekend.
Sommige tracks zijn wat aan de korte kant maar de hele plaat
is buitengewoon onderhoudend en klinkt erg lekker, een
verrassing voor elke samba liefhebber..

This fine collection of sambas shows us a galore of artists. It
concerns a carnaval project from 1976 with a row of unknown
singers, the only name I knew was Oswaldo Nunes. Some of the
songs are a little on the short side but overall the whole album
is fairly good and sounds very nice. A pleasant surprise
for all samba lovers, enjoy listening..

Je hebt enorm gelijk Ted, iedereen was vergeten te reageren
op die plaat van los Cuatro Grandes del Acordeon uit de
Dominicaanse Republiek. Vooral deze snelle ripiao stijl is
er een om te koesteren naar mijn mening. Dit is Alvarado
Bartolo ofwel de Blinde, el Cieguito de Nagua. Ongelooflijke
speelstijl houden ze er daar op na, muziek die
nooit vegeten zou mogen worden..

You’re so right Ted, everybody forgot to react to that hot
merengue from the Dominicans. Especially this fast ripiao
style is one to cherish to my opinion. This is Bartolo Alvarado
who they call the blind one, el Cieguito de Nagua. Incredible
way of playing the acordeon don’t you think ? Wonderful
music which should not be forgotten..

Verckys in Kinshasa hebben we hier de Langa Langa Stars en de Choc
Stars die beiden deel vormden van de clan Langa Langa. Er zit en complex
stuk historie achter deze groepen. Ga het net op om deze te achterhalen
want ik doe niet eens een poging. Fantastische semi soukous uit 1983. Ik
ben gek op de ‘Voix Cassé’, de gebroken stem van Dindo Yogo in track 1&2
maar de hele plaat is heerlijk, luister zelf en kijk wat jij ervan vindt..

Two bands united on one album today. From the studios of Verckys
in Kinshasa we have the Langa Langa Stars and the Choc Stars who
were both part of the clan Langa Langa. The history behind these
groups is a complex story which I’m not even going to try tell you.

de boel er nog wat zonniger bijlag. We vinden op gitaar de
virtuose Robert Martino welke we reeds eerder hoorden
op de platen van Tuco en die van Les Gypsies de Pétion-Ville.
Andere grote namen zijn natuurlijk Fred en André Dejean
van Les Frères Dejean. Instrumentale hoogstandjes door
deze superband, luister zelf..

when the island was a bit happier than today. On guitar we find
the vituoso Robert Martino who we heard on earlier occasions
with Tuco and with Les Gypsies de Pétion-Ville. Other big names

een uit 1973 welke ook zeker de moeite waard is. Zijn werk
is uniek en van hoogstaande kwaliteit. Dit album bevat wat
hij noemde ‘Quindembo’ Afro Magic, de afro-cuban sound

Het was ergens in februari 1986, Barrington Levy trad op in Paradiso
Amsterdam. Ik was 28 jaar oud en met twee goede vrienden trokken
we naar Amsterdam om hem te zien. Het werd een memorabele avond.
Een van mijn vrienden, G.J. Kamer had toen nog een eigen radioprogramma
bij de KRO, ‘Demo’ genaamd. Hij had de opdracht meegekregen om Barrington
te interviewen, dus na de show werden we in de Vip Bus gevraagd die voor de
deur van Paradiso stond. Gerard deed zijn interview en toen hebben we nog
wat met die jongens gerookt en wat foto ‘s genomen. Hier onder zie je er een
paar van Barrington en Jackie Mittoo. Ze zwaaiden ons nog uit bij het afscheid,
al met al een avond om nooit meer te vergeten..wat een aardige jongens..

It became an evening to remember. One of my friends, G.J. Kamer still had his
own show at KRO Radio in those days and brought a recorder to interview
Barrington, so after the gig we were invited in the Vip Bus which was parked
in front of Paradiso. Gerard did his interview and we stayed a while, smoking

Het was weer eens tijd voor wat Ghanese highlife. We hadden
ooit een van zijn platen met de Sweet Talks. A.B. Crentsil is terug
vandaag met een veel latere productie. Eerlijk gezegd vind ik niet
al zijn werk even interessant maar dit in Londen opgenomen album
klinkt goed. Vanzelfsprekend geen idee over de inhoud maar
de sound is gewoon lekker. Geef hem een kans en luister..

It was time for some Ghanaian highlife. We had one of his records
with the Sweet Talks once. A.B. Crentsil is back today with a much
later production. To be honest I don’t think all his work is equally
interesting but this album which was recorded in London sounds
nice. As usual I’ve got no idea about the message brought
but it just sounds good. Give it a chance and listen..
