Yesterday I received a message from Pete M. in which he referred
to the film ‘Soul Power’, the Kinshasa 1974, 3 day festival, organized
by Don King and Hugh Masekela. In this wonderful documentary we
see; James Brown, Muhammad Ali, B.B. King, Bill Withers, Miriam
Makeba, Celia Cruz, Johnny Pacheco, Ray Barretto, Manu Dibango,
The Spinners, The Crusaders, Big Black, Franco’s O.K. Jazz, Sivuca,
Tabu Ley Rochereau and many others. A little later the famous
‘Rumble in the Jungle’ fight between Muhammad Ali and George
Foreman took place there. We see a mixture of Muhammad Ali talking,
the musicians in the airplane to Kinshasa, fragments of the festival,
Congolese groups playing in the streets and such. To accompany
the film a James Brown classic album from 1971.

Ik ontving gisteren een berichtje van Pete M. waarin hij refereerde
aan de film ‘Soul Power’, het 3 daagse festival in Kinshasa in 1974
dat werd geörganiseerd door Don King en Hugh Masekela. In deze
prachtige documentaire zien we; James Brown, Muhammad Ali,
B.B. King, Bill Withers, Miriam Makeba, Celia Cruz, Johnny Pacheco,

Een korte tijd later vond er het beroemde ‘Rumble in the Jungle’
gevecht tussen Muhammad Ali en George Foreman plaats. We
zien een mix van de sprekende Muhammad Ali, muzikanten in
het vliegtuig naar Kinshasa, fragmenten van het festival, Congo-
lese bands in de straten van Kinshasa en dergelijke. Om de film
te vergezellen , een klassiek James Brown album uit 1971.

After yesterday’s comment by El Profe I decided to end
the Willie Colon row of posts. It is time for something
quite different. I just learned about a marvelous docu-
mentary. It is called ‘Summer of Soul’. In 1969 there were
a couple of festivals in the New York area of which this
one was almost forgotten. Everybody knows about the
‘Summer of Love’ referring to Woodstock of course.
Same time there was the ‘Harlem Cultural Festival’
known as ‘Black Woodstock’. It was spread over 6
weekends and had a range of black artists; Nina Simone,
B.B. King, Sly and the Family Stone, Chuck Jackson, Abbey
Lincoln & Max Roach, the 5th Dimension, Gladys Knight &
the Pips, Stevie Wonder, Mahalia Jackson and Moms Mabley
among many others. I thought it would be appropriate to
post an album with Sly and the Family Stone from earlier
that same year. As from today the film ‘Summer of Soul’
is shown on Disney Channel, go there and enjoy ..

na het commentaar van El Profe gisteren heb ik besloten
de reeks Willie Colon posts te beëindigen. Het is tijd voor
iets totaal anders. Zojuist ontdekte ik dat er een prachtige
documentaire bestaat genaamd ‘Summer of Soul’. In 1969
waren er twee belangrijke festivals in de Staat new York.
Iedereen weet van de ‘Summer of Love’ natuurlijk met
betrekking op Woodstock. tegelijker tijd was er het ‘Harlem
Cultural Festival’ ook wel bekend als ‘Black Woodstock’. Het
speelde zich af over zes weekenden met artiesten als Nina
Simone, B.B. King, Sly and the Family Stone, Chuck Jackson,
Abbey Lincoln & Max Roach, the 5th Dimension, Gladys Knight
& the Pips, Stevie Wonder, Mahalia Jackson and Moms Mabley
en vele anderen. Het leek me toepasselijk een plaat van Sly and
the Family Stone te plaatsen van eerder dat zelfde jaar. Vanaf

From 1973 we’ve got this record with the funny title;
‘Lo Mato Si No Compra este LP’ (I’ll kill him if you don’t
buy this LP). I didn’t have it on lp myself but I do have the
cd. Another great album with a great line-up ..

Uit het jaar 1973 hebben we deze plaat met de grappige
naam; ‘Lo Mato Si No Compra este LP’ (als je deze plaat niet
koopt vermoord ik hem). Ik had hem zelf niet op elpee dus
heb ik de cd versie voor je gepost die wel op de plank staat.

Indeed I was taking a short break last week, visiting my brother
in Copenhagen, Denmark. Fortunately the heavy rainfall and
forthcoming damage was not in my part of the Netherlands.
It occurred in a relative small area south of our country and
in some parts of Belgium and Germany. The destruction was
enormous and I pity all who suffered losses.

Let’s see what we have on the turntable today .. Since Willie
Colon was received quite well yesterday and we’ve got a bunch
of un-posted albums by his hand, let’s make it a whole theme
week. I’m posting another five of his records in chronological
order for you. His third album was already here, this is his fourth
from 1969. We have the Venezuelan release on Inca/Palacio.

Willie and his friends liked to pose as gangsters, acting to be
Wanted, not by the police but by the dancing public. On this
sleeve he appears as a bank robber. Colombian salsa artist
Fruko copied the style and also made record sleeves like this ..

Wat hebben we vandaag op de draaitafel ? Aangezien Willie
Colon gisteren zo goed werd ontvangen en er nog een stel
van zijn platen wacht om gepost te worden maak ik er maar
direct een hele thema week van. Ik post er nog vijf in chrono-
logische volgorde. Zijn derde plaat hadden we hier al, dit is zijn
vierde uit 1969. We hebben de Venezolaanse versie op
Inca/Palacio.

Willie en zijn vrienden vonden het leuk om als gangsters te
poseren. Op de volgende zien we hem ‘Wanted’, niet door
de politie maar door zijn dans publiek. Op deze poseert hij
als bankrover. Colombiaanse salsa held Fruko kopiëerde
dit en maakte ook veel platenhoezen als die van Willie ..

Once I re-tasted the flavour of Willie’s marvelous sound, it was
a small and logical step to bring more of his splendid albums.
This is solid black gold. With hector Lavoe’s great voice and
the rest of this, still very young, band you can’t go wrong.
Willies first album is also for grabs here. This is his second
from 1968. Early New York salsa from one of the
finest in the field .. more will follow ..

Toen ik de geweldige sound van Willie Colon’s band terug hoorde
was het een kleine en logische stap, hoog tijd voor meer van zijn
platen. Dit is puur goud. Met de machtig mooie stem van Hector
Lavoe en de rest van deze, nog zeer jonge, band kun je niet mis
gaan. Willie’s eerste plaat is ook downloadbaar, hier. Dit is zijn
tweede album uit 1968. Vroege New York salsa
van een van de beste in dit veld ..

Posting ‘Buscando America’, by Ruben Blades, I just discovered
that another album with him has disappeared from the site.
I am sure I have posted this record long time ago. It has vanished
mysteriously somehow. before we became independent this
occurred more often. Please let us know if there are others you
know of so I can re-post. A fine piece of latin music with the great
Willie Colon and his trombone, originally just on Fania ..

Toen ik zojuist ‘Buscando America’ met Ruben Blades postte, ont-
dekte ik de mysterieuze verdwijning van een ander album met hem.
Ik weet heel zeker dat ik Siembra met Willie Colon en Ruben Blades
lang geleden heb gepost. Voordat de GG onafhankelijk werd gebeurde
dit vaker. Mocht je dit van andere platen weten, laat het dan s.v.p.
weten, dan kan ik deze herposten. een lekkere plaat met de grote
Willie Colon en zijn trombone, origineel slechts op Fania ..
