- Friday April 23, 20105 comments on Kasongo – Muzimbabwe,Gramma 1988
Another group we haven’t heard before at this page is this one.
It’s a recording on the great Gramma label from Zimbabwe.
Formed in 1977, Kasongo was comprised of former liberation
fighters who had sought exile in Tanzania before independence.
The band picked up local influences of East African music while
forming their distinctive chimurenga sound away from home.

Highly infectious is this Music From Zimbabwe. Jonah Moyo
and his Devera Ngwena are extremely popular in their
country. Very understandable if you hear this superb LP.
This is volume 10 of a series which I hope to bring to you
in the future. Most of them are still on my huntinglist.
Next month we’ll already have the next big recordfair
in Utrecht. I am already looking forward to it.
For now, listen and dance to this sweet piece of vinyl,tracks;

Dance rhythms hot like fire, strong and sharp guitar-riffs and
four voices that round up the sound to make you go mad on
the dancefloor. The Four Brothers were Zimbabwe’s No 1 band
in this genre for decades. The band’s leader, Marshall Munhumumwe
is Thomas Mapfumo’s uncle, he suffered from a stroke in 1997 and
can unfortunately perform no longer. ‘The Four Brothers’ took this
name to remain equal, so no brother would become ‘big’. Many
Zimbabwean groups broke up because of that before them.
Shona music or Chimurenga, either way seductive stuff.
Go dance like crazy with the Four Brothers.tracks:

Robson Banda is a Congolese musician in Zimbabwe. He worked with
Thomas Mapfumo, Jonah Moyo and many others. Although Congolese,
Robson sings his music in Shona language and brings it close to genuine
Chimurenga. Including mbira-based guitar licks and elements of Jit.tracks;

One of my favourite bands from Zimbabwe is this group. The
Four Brothers made their chimurenga very nicely balanced.
Just the four of them, Marshall Munhumumwe – drums and lead vocals,
Never Mutare – bass and vocals, Aleck Chipaika – rhythm guitar and vocals,
Frank Sibanda – lead guitar and vocals. Just strings, drums and voices, sweet.tracks;

A couple of weeks ago, when I was on a record trip, I found this
album. Jonah Moyo brings Chimurenga with a strong guitar drive and
chorus. He writes all his own music and is highly appreciated
throughout Zimbabwe and across it’s borders.tracks;

Tomorrow or rather, today, 21st of june, I’ll go to the
Amsterdam_Roots_Festival, a multi cultural music event
in the Amsterdam Oosterpark with 7 stages and
groups from all over our Globe. One of the groups,
Chiwoniso, you see here with Busi Ncube, is from Zimbabwe.
A fine moment to post some music by an other Zimbabwean,
Thomas Mapfumo, check out his Chimurenga

Let’s see what we got in the car. Okay, now everybody hold
something in your hand. Perfect, great coverpicture. The music
of Thomas Mapfumo and his Blacks Unlimited is almost hypnotizing.
It makes you drift away to unknown destinations.
The Lion of Zimbabwe they call him and if you like to know
more about ‘Chimurenga’ and Thomas Mapfumo, go here.tracks;

From Zimbabwe this is Thomas Mapfumo, he’s back with an album
of Greatest Hits and they are absolutely great.
Astonishing rhythms and guitarwork, Mapfumo’s coolness,
a true beauty. Tracks 2 and 3 are with the ‘Acid Band’,
the others with ‘Blacks Unlimited’.tracks;

For two decades Oliver ‘Tuku’ Mtukudzi has been the second biggest
name in Zimbabwean Chimurenga. Little known abroad but big at
home. Just behind Thomas Mapfumo and maybe already next to him
in Zimbabwe. This is one of his two dozen albums, which I found
recently. Listen to Tuku-Music.tracks;
