- Friday August 8, 20149 comments on Los Ases del Ritmo – Costa Brava vol.1
Goodmorning groovers, I have another appointment with one
of our contributors today, Sanjay is the man that brings us
these killer Colombian lp’s. Costa Brava vol.1 is such an
album. ( nothing to do with the Spanish costa brava ) It
contains songs by three great musicians to my opinion.
Anibal Velasquez is the most famous of the three but
Aniceto Molina and José Velasquez are not to be under-
estimated as well. There’s one cumbia track and futher we
find paseo, pase-goajiro, paseito, pasebol, rumba, guaracha
and merengue-joropo, all happy Colombian styles.
Very enjoyable stuff you’d better not miss..tracks;
1 Anibal Velasques – Caruya’
2 Anibal Velasquez – Mi destino
3 Aniceto Molina – El bailarin
4 José Velasquez – Juanita
5 Aniceto Molina – Mayo
6 Anibal Velasquez – Yolanda
7 José Velasquez – Caracol
8 Anibal Velasquez – Beso pagado
9 Aniceto Molina – Maria elisa
10 Anibal Velasquez – Dejala que sufra
11 Anibal Velasquez – En brazos de otro

Our minds are funny things, do you know that phenomenon ?
The way an lp sleeve can influence what we think about it..
When we see a cover with a cheesy picture of a nude, we
expect a lesser album then when seeing an album cover
like this one. Our perception can fool us sometimes but
in this particular case the sleeve doesn’t lie. I think this
lp is exceptional good as frontsleeve already suggests.
Great picture of a great band, Anibal Velasquez made
dozens of albums. Though not entirely sure, I’ve got
reason to believe this lp is from 1974. What ever
year it was, ‘Golpe Currambero’ will convince
you of Anibal Velasquez’ quality’s,
listen and agree..tracks;
1 El emigrante
2 Mi fosforito
3 Mi casa vacia
4 Tomasa
5 La paciencia
6 Soy tu marido
7 Golpe currambero
8 Mi suki suki
9 No vuelvo contigo

Okay fellow groovers, back to reality. When I first saw
this lp, I was naive and thought it had something to do
with Colombian salsa band ‘Sonora Carruseles’. And
when listening to the first track one continues to feel
a certain link with the group. However after searching
the web for it, I didn’t find anything. Listening to the lp
I got captured by surprise, as pleased as punch, “lo
Primero Conjunto Miramar” found it’s self another fan.
Original songs, no salsa but cumbias, porros, pregon,
Guaracha, son and guajira, pure sweetness to the ear.
Now I have tried to convince you before, so no more
superlatives, just get it and give it a spin..azúcar !..tracks;
1 Carruseles
2 Reina de cumbias
3 Sufre negra
4 Picale
5 La silenciosa
6 Pregonando

You know you’re all such lucky bastards, this music is
almost impossible to find. The main man here is my buddy
Sanjay. He travells to Colombia and finds these killer lp’s.
Thank you again Sanjay, the album we have here is just
breathtaking. I love the stirring rhythms and wild sound
of the porros and guarachas. Sonora Curro with Crecencio
Camacho and Romansito are here with their swell
names and grooves to make you drift off, close
y’r eyes and you’re in a different world..
Get it & Spread it !I’m sorry the lp has some hisss.. and stuff…
..on the other hand..with such a sleeve..tracks;

Caliente means hot, and hot it is ! This album from 1973 is sure
to get you in a dancing mood. With it’s infectious guaracha’s,
cumbia’s and paseaito’s it ain’t easy to remain seated. Chico
Cervantes appears first time at the GG today (part from one song)
and we’re proud to have him. Next to incredibly nice music it has
a typical and somewhat strange trippy sleeve, I love it. Another
sure thing is, if I deejay on somebody’s birthday party in the future,
the fifth track of this lp will pass by to make certain that happy
moment. Better don’t wait or hesitate…get on Chico’s wave
and tell your friends to go there too…tracks;

Conjunto Chappottín and his Stars was founded in 1950: African
Cuban tres-guitarist, composer and bandleader, Arsenio Rodriguez,
known as el Ciego Maravilloso, or the Marvelous Blind One, had settled
in New York to recover his vision. He decided from there that his All Stars
band, which he left in Cuba during his 1948 move to New York, should be
transferred into the professional care of his first trumpetist, Felix Chappottín.
From that moment, the original Arsenio Rodriguez All Stars band was
transformed into Conjunto Chappottín y sus Estrellas. The group was Led by
Felix Chappottín with Luis (Lili) Martinez Grinan as the arranger and Miguelito
Cuni the lead singer. Under the leadership of Felix Chappottín, only to be
compared with Louis Satchmo Armstrong, the band rose to international
fame, moving and amusing dancers in different parts of the world.
( info from AfroCubaWeb )I bought this lp from a friend who used to collect Cuban music with passion.
One day when he was in need of money, he sold me his entire collection
with the idea to buy it back some other time. Unfortunately Dirk has left
this world a couple of years ago. I am taking care of the music, keeping it
together and sharing some of it with you, like today. Hope U like.I found that the same lp was also released with
a different cover, as shown in small picture,
don’t know which one was the original.tracks;

For this saturday a re-up and re-post. Anibal Velasquez is still one of
Colombia’s biggest artists. I read somewhere he made over 300 records
a huge amount. Still performing, he turns places upside-down. If you
ever get the chance to see him perform do not hesitate and buy that
ticket instantly. I hope to get that chance myself one fine day.
For now, enjoy this oldie but very goodie oncemore, check # 8.tracks;

Do you still have your occasional dance in the livingroom sometimes ?
I have just the thing for a saturdaynight, Cortijo and his Combo are
here to brighten up the sphere. Percussionist and orchestral leader
Cortijo and singer Ismael Rivera are considered best interpreters
of the Plena, Danza and Bomba, three typical Puerto Rican styles.
