From 1978 we’ve got this album with the great Chief Kofi Sammy
and his Okukuseku Band of Ghana. The sleeve of the record is quite
worn out, the vinyl itself however is still in good shape. I have added
the pictures taken from Discogs which are in much better condition.

Chief Kofi Sammy is hier andermaal met dit heelijke album uit 1978.
De hoes is bijna verdwenen maar het vinyl zelf verkeert nog in prima
staat. Ik heb de foto’s van Discogs bijgevoegd, die zijn een stukje beter.

An album without any information on Rogers All Stars from
Onitsha, Nigeria. I found it with the wrong sleeve and had to
copy this one from Youtube for it was the only one I could find.
It concerns the Original Brothers Band led by Sir Major with
Iheoma Ogo Egbulum from 1980. The highlife makes me think
of that from the Oriental Brothers, I guess it is from the same
region. I have no sleeve and no info, if one of you does, please
be so good to share it with the rest of us. For now just
listen to the Original Brothers Band ..

Vandaag een plaat zonder enige informatie op Rogers All Stars
uit Onitsha, Nigeria. Ik vond hem zonder de juiste hoes en heb
deze daarom van Youtube moeten halen, de enige plek waar ik
hem kon vinden. Het betreft hier een album van de Original
Brothers Band led by Sir Major met Iheoma Ogo Egbulum
uit 1980. De highlife doet me denken aan die van de Oriental

dus geen hoes en geen info, als één van jullie ‘m heeft, deel

Another Ghanaian highlife group I have cherished from
the first time I laid my ears on them is this one. I had to
borrow the sleeve from Discogs for my copy came to me
with the wrong cover when I bought it. Nana Agyeman
Opambuo was born in Feyiase, Ashanti region in 1954.
After leaving school he became a singer with Afro Boateng
Band and later with Kwabena Akwaboah Band. The boy
with the golden voice he was called and his first hit was
‘Maniso Tan Me’. He started his own group with the
financial support of producer A.K. Brobbey.

Nog zo’n fijne Ghanese groep die ik koester vanaf de eerste
keer dat ik ze hoorde is deze. Ik heb de hoes van Discogs
moeten lenen omdat mijn exemplaar met een verkeerde hoes
kwam toen ik hem kocht. Nana Agyeman Opambuo werd

On this sunday morning we’ve got something different.
Ghanaian band Vis-aVis play six songs in Congo style.
The first track has some nasty pops and is therefore
quite bad sounding in the beginning. I have thought
about skipping it. From one third it starts sounding
better though so I left it for you to decide if you still
want to keep it. Isaac Yeboah, Sammy Cropper and
their group really nail this, they were still very young
here but clearly know what they’re doing, they prove
themselves extremely versatile .. enjoy your sunday ..

een bijzondere plaat voor je. De Ghanese band Vis-aVis
speelt zes nummers in Congo stijl. Het eerste nummer
heeft enkele lelijke plops en klinkt daardoor nogal slecht
in het begin. Ik had het bijna weggelaten maar na één
derde wordt het weer zeer acceptabel en heb ik besloten
het aan jou over te laten of je het bewaart. Isaac Yeboah,
Sammy Cropper en hun groep doen dit ondanks hun lage
leeftijd erg goed. Ze weten duidelijk wat ze
doen en blijken zeer veelzijdig.

One of the fun things about crate digging is one discovers
artists and music never heard of. The Utrecht record fair
is the place where I meet loads of record dealers from all
over the world. One of them always brings the most obscure
Nigerian vinyl. Thank you Sofiane for all that sweet Etsakor
stuff you bring us.

What have we got for you today, an album with Sir Jerry
Oshiorenua and the Heroes Dance Band of Etsako. When
going to Discogs I find the name Mike Esimiekhua. No idea
if Sir Jerry is an alias but it looks like it. One way or the other,
his sound is quite different from the Afenmai/ Etsakor music
we have heard so far. Get, spread and listen ..

Één van de mooie kanten van het platen zoeken is dat je van
tijd tot tijd muziek vindt van Artiesten waar je nog nooit van
gehoord hebt. De Mega Platenbeurs in Utrecht is de plek bij
uitstek. Ik ontmoet er platen dealers uit de hele wereld. Één
van hen brengt altijd de meest obscure platen mee uit Nigeria.
Dank je Sofiane voor al die geweldige Etsakor elpees.

Wat hebben we hier ? Een album met Sir Jerry Oshiorenua
and the Heroes Dance Band of Etsako. Op Discogs vinden we
het onder de naam Mike Esimiekhua, geen idee of Sir Jerry
een alias is maar het lijkt erop. Hoe dan ook, zijn sound is flink
anders dan de Etsakor/Afenmai muziek die we tot dusver
hebben gehoord. Down, deel en luister ..

Mohammed Malcolm Ben was born in eastern Ghana. He started
as a musician with the Messenger’s Dance Band T.O. Jazz, I.K.’s
Band and the K.K. Masters. As a producer he started in 1970, did
African brother’s album ‘Agatha’ and ‘Owuo Aye Me Bi’ and City Boys’
album ‘Ankwanobi’. Mohammed Malcolm Ben took his name from
famous Afro-American activist Malcolm X whom he met in 1963
when the latter was visiting Ghana. When working on this album
in 1983 Malcolm Ben explained; “It is my intention to pay tribute
to all black warriors, both African and Afro-American who have
suffered and died in the struggle to liberate black people.”

Zeggen we City Boys dan zeggen we the Black Chinese of
Chairman Muo oftewel Obuoba J.A. Adofo. Hij was de leider
van deze briljante Ghanese highlife band. Alle platen van deze
jongens zijn geweldig goed. Als je er eenmaal aan begint is het
moeilijk stoppen met luisteren naar de aanstekelijke highlife.
Dit album, City Boys in Nigeria, vol. 1, liegt er niet om, een
must have voor elke liefhebber, get it, spread it en luister ..

If we say City Boys, we say the Black Chinese or Chairman Muo.
Obuoba A.J. Adofo was the leader of this brilliant Ghanaian highlife
band. All their records are very good and once you start it is difficult
to stop listening to the infectious highlife they bring. This album,
City Boys in Nigeria, vol. 1, does not lie about it, a must have
for every lover of Ghanaian highlife, get it, spread it & listen ..
