On Harlequin we find this lovely cd with the music of Filiberto
Rico and his group Rico’s Creole Band. He was a Cuban clarinet
player and one of the first to bring Cuban music to Europe.
    Read more in this Bio.

Blessed in Havana, Cuba, in 1910, Filiberto Rico was one of
the primary wave of music artists to popularize Latin American
music throughout north European countries. An alto saxophonist
who doubled on flute, youthful Rico gigged and documented with
several rings in Paris and Copenhagen through the past due ’20s,
especially Moises Simon’s Orquesta Tipica Cubana. Rico’s Creole
Music group was produced in 1930 and interested the Parisian
open public using the conga, the beguine, as well as the bolero
until a proliferation of Nazis (equipped with a racist Weltan-
schauung that criminalized the cultural variety embodied in
the word “Creole”) managed to get essential for this Afro-Cuban
musician to absent himself from the spot through the years
1941-1946. Rico’s postwar reputation in Paris and along the
France Riviera is renowned, and continues to be related to the
mixing of Western european and Latin American designs. His early
recordings had been reissued in two amounts on compact disk with
the Harlequin label in 1993-1994, and his postwar profession is
documented on the retrospective two-fer released in 2003 by
    Fremeaux & Associes. ( MusicianBio)

When the weather is changing and fall drops in on us, I always tend
to start playing more popmusic. Atmospheric stuff with lots of variety.
Something quite else is this cd on the prestigious Luaka Bop label of
David Byrne. His selections are outstanding and surprising. This album
is from 1991, already 28 years of age but feels like yesterday. Mr. Byrne
treats us with music from the UK, Brazil, the US and Cuba. A nice bunch
of songs in different styles and moods, listen ..

P.S. I discovered one strange mistake, track #9 is not Agepê as written
on the cd’s cover. It is Martinho da Vila with Claustrofobia.

cd omslag vermeldt. Het is Martinho da Vila met Claustrofobia.

    tracks ;

    01 – A.R. Kane – A love from outer space
02 – Jorge Ben – Ponte de lança africano (umbabarauma)
03 – David Byrne – Dirty old town
    04 – Tom Zé – Augusta, Angélica e consolação
05 – Conjunto Rumbavana – No me llores
    06 – Luiz Conzaga – O fole roncou
    07 – Silvio Rodriguez – Nuestro tema
    08 – Jack Dangers – Ava
    09 – Martinho da Vila – Claustrofobia
    10 – A.R. Kane – Miles apart
11 – Caetano Veloso – Um canto de afoxé para o bloco do ilê
    12 – Trio Nordestino – Rejeição
13 – Celeste Mendoza – Mi rumba echando candela
14 – David Byrne – Make believe mambo (club mix)

On Disques Vogue, probably from the sixties, we find this CMDINT 9577.
It is the very last one listed at their Discogs discography without year of
release. Ry-Co comes from Rythmes Congolais and was initiated in 1958.
Based in Martinique from 1966 to about 1971. Their records are kind of
hard to come by. Radio Martiko re-released one of their albums in 2018.

Hi groovers, so we had us two albums with singer Ryco from Guadeloupe.
Today we have a record with M’Bilia Casino who used to take part in Ry-Co
Jazz, something totally different. Ry-Co or Ryco Jazz a was founded in Congo
in 1858/59 by Henri Bowane. They spent four years in Martinique where their
music was very popular. After returning in Africa in 1971 the group split up.
Members like saxophone player Jean Serge Essous and others each went their
own way. M’Bilia Casino made this album in 1976. It contains styles like rumba
biguine, bolero and merengue. Enjoy listening ..

    Alberto Montiel, front

The lp we have today has appearantly been property of Radio
Sincelejo. You can see how some enthousiastic worker changed
the frontsleeve, pitty but okay, it’s all about the music anyway.
The vallenato is from 1981 and you can hear it getting more
modern. Full bass and produced differently than in the earlier
seventies. The songs are strong however and the jumpy
basslines take you to the dancefloor automatically.
    Listen to the wounded acordeon..

    tracks;

    01 – Acordeon herido
    02 – Amparito
    03 – La rabiosa
04 – El hombre que llora
    05 – La china idalide
    06 – La india caderona
    07 – El guayabito
    08 – Matando plagas
    09 – Honda herida
10 – El hijo ajeno as cabezon
    11 – El martirio

    Jimmy Pedrozo, front

In 1986 Globestyle released the album ‘Fiesta Vallenata’, part of
the series ‘Accordions that shook the world’. it contains a few
songs that captured me from the very start. Lo mas sabroso
by Jimmy Pedrozo & Franklin Ariza struck me like lightning.
I had never heard such music before and it was more or less
the beginning of my search for more. The lp is available here.

Other songs that hit me instantly were the other two Jimmy
pedrozo songs and ‘India Matea’ by Miguel Duran. I’m still on
the look out to find the album containing that song. Yesterday
my buddy Sanjay payed me a visit and a big surprise came
along with him. After 30 years finally I found volume 2 of Jimmy
Pedrozo & Franklin Ariza. In fact, Sanjay is the man that helped
me searching and he found it in Bogota. What a special moment
when listening to it first time. The song ‘Lo mas sabroso’ must be
on volume 1 so the search continues but for now we are so lucky
to be able to listen to “Paso la vida pensando” by Jimmy Pedrozo
con Franklin Ariza y su Conjunto, hope U like..

    tracks;

01 – Paso la vida pensando
    02 – La visuaca
03 – Pa’ todo el año
04 – La huella de tu amor
    05 – El loro
    06 – Sirvientas modernas
    07 – Por sapo
    08 – Zumba que zumba
    09 – Amor de papel

    Orchestre Stukas, front

Orchestre Stukas, on the floor in Club Rex

Lita Bembo’s Orchestre Stukas always finds a happy
listener. Only last week, one of our loyal visitors told me
how much they had changed his life. Well Matthew, I guess
this is your lucky day, I just found us this killer album
by them at the last big record fair in Utrecht. I think
it is super nice, hardly possible to stay in your chair,
those guitars keep going and going, man I bet
you’re bound to break loose, haha..
    I challenge you..

I was playing this lp and studying the sleeve when my eye
fell on the words “photos réalisées au Rex Club”.
Was this really true? I know that place..I’ve been there..
Wow, it must have been in 1982 when I was on a trip to Paris by bus for
the weekend. We were with a large group of volunteers, all workers behind
the bar in ‘de Tagrijn’, a youth-center and stage in my old hometown.
It was on this trip that we accidentally ended up with a little group of four,
we were with two boys and two girls but just collegues and good friends.
Initially we thought we were going to a reggae-club. Some dread in the
subway had pointed us there. We came in a bit early I think, it was still
empty so we took a drink and waited for what became one of the greatest
nights of my life. When people started to fill the place, reality opened up
before us. We were the only white visitors in this wonderful African Club.
I remember like it was yesterday, saturday night at Club Rex, Rue des
Bonnes Nouvelles. A night, complete with Mister and Miss elections,
& dance competition. Now I come to think of it, it must have been just
around the time when Lita Bembo and his buddies were there.
We drank, smoked and danced till closing time, made plenty
of friends, oh my, it was such a wild, funny and happy
experience, I could never forget.. wow & damn..
    how time flies, astonishing discovery..
I loved it there. Felt as black
    as can be..

    tracks;

    1 Guelord – 4 saisons
    2 Muana pauvre
    3 Djodjo
    4 Lupiano
