Oswaldo Sargentelli was a Brazillian radio and t.v. host. He called
himself a black man in a white body. Crazy about samba he was
the main force behind his Quadra Geral, the name under which
he released a number of samba albums with various artists. The
one we find today is from 1972 and presents several singers.

Hij zag zichzelf als een zwarte man in een blank lichaam. Gek op samba
was hij de man achter zijn Quadra Geral, de naam waaronder hij diverse

uit 1972 waarop we meerdere zangers horen. Voor mij de meest

Thanks to the great Zecalouro of the Loronix Brazillian music
blog, that unfortunately stopped years ago, we are able to
listen to this nice record with Alberto Mota e seu Conjunto.
It concerns samba from 1963, a little jazzy, but just good.

naar deze fijne plaat met Alberto Mota e seu Conjunto luis-

We just got back from a short break spent in Portugal. April 1st
there was some 8 cm of snow in the Netherlands so the timing
to leave was perfect. When coming back yesterday we found
20 degrees Celsius, quite a lot better. What have we got for you
today ? A samba album with Joel Teixeira, when posting one
almost ten years ago it was received quite well. This one is
from 1981, first released in 1979 Joel was loyal to the
seventies sound. Happy and solid listening here ..

Zojuist terug van een korte vakantie in Portugal. Op 1 april lag er
zo’n 8cm sneeuw hier in het Gooi dus het was een perfecte dag
om te vertrekken. Toen we gisteren terug kwamen troffen we
20 graden aan, heel wat beter. Wat hebben we voor je vandaag ?

Elza Gomes da Conceição overleed afgelopen donderdag op 91
jarige leeftijd. Elza Soares leed een lang en veelbewogen
leven. Op haar 12de werd zij door haar vader uitgehuwelijkt.
Op haar 13de kreeg ze haar eerste kind en op haar 15de had ze
er al twee verloren. Op 21 jarige leeftijd werd ze weduwe met
vijf kinderen. In 1962 ontmoette ze Garrincha, de beroemde
voetballer die samen met Pelé twee maal wereldkampioen werd.
Ze trouwden in 1966. Het huwelijk duurde tot 1982 toen ze hem
na de zoveelste geweldsuitbarsting verliet. Garrincha was
alcolholist en ging graag vreemd. Hij overleed op de zelfde
datum als Elza, 39 jaar eerder. In Brazilië is drie dagen
van rouw afgekondigd wegens Elza’s dood. Lees haar Nederlandse

Last thursday the Queen of Samba, Elza Gomes da Conceição,
died age 91. Elza Soares had a long and intense life. She was
12 years when her father forced her to marry Lourdes Antônio
Soares who’s name she kept using her entire life. Age 13 she had
her first child, age 15 she had already lost two children. When Elza
was 21 her husband died of tuberculosis and left her being a widow
with five children. In 1962 Elza met ‘Garrincha’, the famous soccer
player who, together with Pelé, became world champion two times.
They got married in 1966. Their marriage lasted until 1982 when she
left him after him being violent. Garrincha was an alcoholic and loved
to go out with other women. He died on the same date, 39 years earlier.
The whole of Brazil has been morning for three days after Elza died.

Adoniran Barbosa’s real name was João Rubinato, he was a descendent
of Italian immigrants in São Paulo, Brazil. Adoniran was interpreter of so
called Samba Paulistano and wrote his songs mainly for the poor Italians
from the São Paulo quarters ‘Bexiga’ and ‘Brás’. He used their wrong
Portuguese on purpose. One of his biggest hits was ‘Trem das Onze’.
You may find it on ‘Demônios da Garoa, Trem das Onze’ below.
This record was originally from 1975, this is the 2006 cd release ..

Osvaldo Nunes was raised in charities and never met his parents.
Used to live in the streets of Rio de Janeiro, worked as a whaler,
as shoeshine boy and street vendor and as street artist. He lived
a poor life until he started to visit samba schools and carnival
blocks. He then began his artistic career. His life ended tragically,
found a mysterious death, killed in his Rio apartment ..

Osvaldo Nunes groeide op in liefdadigheidsinstellingen en heeft
zijn ouders nooit gekend. Leefde lang op straat in Rio de Janeiro
en werkte als walvisvaarder, schoenpoetser en straatverkoper,
maar ook als straat artiest. Hij had een arm bestaan totdat hij
de sambascholen en carnaval ‘blocks’ begon te bezoeken en
zijn muzikale carrière van start ging. Zijn leven eindigde tragisch,
op mysterieuze wijze vermoord in z’n appartement in Rio ..

It is a shame this album has an annoying crackle throughout
the first side. It looks very clean, but has this disadvantage.
Side two is perfect. For a record from 1968 I decided to accept
it until a better copy emerges. Maybe one of you can clean it
for us. Meantime I hope you can appreciate the great samba
of Ataulfo Alves with a little background noise ..

Het is erg jammer dat deze plaat een hinderlijke kraak heeft
over de hele eerste kant. Hij ziet er schoon uit, maar heeft
dit nadeel. Kant twee is perfect. Voor een album uit 1968
heb ik besloten dit te accepteren tot er een betere kopie
opduikt. Ondertussen hoop dat je de mooie samba van
Ataulfo Alves kunt waarderen met enige ruis ..
