Way back in 2008 we had one album from Curaçao, one of
the Dutch Antilles. Today the second here at the GG. Macario
Prudencia comes in with this strong piece of I don’t know how
to call it. When I found it they told me it is salsa but I don’t think
this is the right description for this type of music. What ever the
proper name is, it sounds wonderful. Happy dancing tunes..

Zo’n tien jaar terug alweer hadden we eens een plaatje uit Curaçao.
Vandaag hebben we dan eindelijk een vervolg. Macario Prudencia en
Continental Combo zijn hier met een sterk staaltje, ja wat eigenlijk..
Toen ik de plaat vond werd me verteld dat het salsa is maar ik denk
dat dit niet helemaal de juiste beschrijving is voor dit soort muziek.
Hoe het ook heten mag, het klinkt heerlijk. Blije dans tunes..

De hoes van de plaat zegt 1980 en het label zegt dat hij uit 1981
komt. We zien dit vaker. Ik ga altijd maar uit van het vroegste, dat
lijkt me het meest logisch. Hoe dan ook, een elpee met twaalf juju
nummers waarvan er weer eens eentje bijzit waarop I.K. Dairo de
accordeon speelt,(#10) dat hoor ik zo graag. I.K. Dairo mocht op een
mooie dag optreden voor de Engelse koningin Elizabeth II. Ze vond
het zo mooi dat hij werd onderscheiden met de titel MBE, Member
of the Brittish Empire. De hoogste eer ooit aan een Afrikaanse
muzikant door een Engelse koningin gegeven..

The sleeve of the album speaks of 1980, the label of 1981. We see
this more often. I always settle for the earliest year, seems to be the
most logic thing to do. One way or the other, an album with twelve juju
songs, one on which I.K. Dairo plays the accordion,(#10) just love to hear that.
I.K. Dairo once had the opportunity to play for the British queen Elizabeth II
when she visited Nigeria. She liked it so much that she honoured him with
the title MBE, member of the British empire. The highest honour ever
given to an African musician by a British queen..

Over the years we have seen quite some sambistas from the
old days. Many great names of dito artists. Here’s a short list
of singers we saw on solo projects or on collector albums.
The singer we want to introduce to you today wasn’t on any of
them so far. Ataulfo Alves is the man. Born on may 2nd, 1909 and
passed away april 20th, 1969, only 59 years old. He wrote many
songs which are still played by samba artists today. if you know
Portuguese, check his Wiki page ..

De afgelopen tien jaar hebben er heel wat sambista’s uit verre
vervlogen tijden de revue gepasseerd. Hierna volgt een lijst met
grote namen van dito artiesten die we reeds te gast hadden met
solo projecten of op verzamel albums. De zanger die hier vandaag
wordt voorgesteld is er een die nog niet eerder langs kwam. Ataulfo

Een van de dingen die het maken van een blog als de GG boeiend
houdt, is de diversiteit ervan. Sommige blogs specialiseren zich in
een bepaalde muzieksoort, ik vind het juist fijn zo eclectisch mogelijk
te blijven. Hierdoor gebeurt het wel eens dat een bepaald genre even
niet aan bod komt. Door het commentaar van Martin werd ik er gisteren
weer aan herinnerd dat het tijd is voor een Ghanese post. Van Kakaiku’s
Guitar Band hadden we reeds volume 1 en 2 dus is het vandaag de beurt
aan ‘Adadam Paa Nie vol. 3’. Hij kraakt wel een beetje hoor maar dat moet
je met dit soort platen voor lief nemen. Ondanks dat veel luister plezier..

One of the things that make maintaining a blog like the GG fascinating is
its diversity. Some blogs specialize in posting one type of music only, I
especially like to keep this page as eclectic as possible. Variety is the fruit..
well you know. This sometimes results in the fact I forget or neglect a
certain genre for some time. Through Martin’s comment yesterday I
remembered it is time for a Ghanaian post. From Kakaiku’s Guitar Band
we already had volumes 1 and 2 and so today we have ‘Adadam Paa Nie
vol. 3’. It does have quite some background noise but hey, we’ll have to
take that with records like this. Listen to it with pleasure anyway..

In onze top twintig van meest gedownloade albums mag Colombia
dan de winnaar zijn, de meeste reacties komen nog altijd op muziek
uit Congo. Veel bezoekers hadden Congo hoger in de utslagen gehoopt
of verwacht. Vandaag weer eens een elpee in dat genre. In de categorie
Congo vinden we veel platen van zangers, bands maar eigenlijk nauwelijks
vrouwelijke artiesten. Ongetwijfeld zijn er naast Mbilia Bel nog wel andere
dames die mooie platen hebben gemaakt. We hebben Franco met Nana en
Baniel, die is mooi. Van Abeti en M’Pongo Love zijn er vast mooie platen
maar ik moet ze nog ontdekken. Onder de bezielende leiding van Tabu Ley
maakte Mbilia Bel een reeks pracht platen, waaronder deze ‘Beyanga’ uit
1987. Op het Genidia label en met Orchestre Afrisa..

In our top twenty of most downloaded albums Colombia may be the one
best represented, however the music from Congo is still the category that
gets the most reactions. Many visitors had hoped or expected Congo to end
up higher in the list so today another record from Congo. If we look in this
category we find lots of band and singers but hardly any female artists. No
doubt there are a lot of great female singers from Congo but part from
Mbilia Bel, Nana and Baniel who performed with Franco, we have not got
much. Abeti and M’Pongo Love must have made good albums But I am
yet to discover them. Under the inspirational guidance of Tabu Ley, Mbilia
Bel made a bunch of great records of which this 1987 ‘Beyanga’.

If we look at the countries represented in our download top
twenty, Colombia is with seven out of twenty the clear winner.
For years I thought African music would be, only because of the
amount of reactions it gains. If I look at the countries and their
amount of visitors, the USA is on top and Colombia is second.
I guess it is a language thing. Not so many Spanish speaking
people leave messages, maybe because I only write in English
and Dutch. My Spanish is not sufficient, and I guess their English
isn’t. One way or the other, it is only fair to give our Colombian
visitors the first next day. This is an album by one of Colombia’s
greatest. Calixto Ochoa deserves a bit more attention. With only
five albums on the site and a huge pile on the shelf, it is about
time. Calixto appears on this 1978 elpee with singer Luis Cuadros.
..just love the smashing basslines..

Als we kijken naar de landen die vertegenwoordigd zijn in onze
download top twintig van gisteren, is Colombia met zeven van de
twintig de duidelijke winnaar. Ik heb jaren gedacht dat Afrikaanse
muziek het zou winnen, alleen al door het aantal reacties dat we
erop krijgen. Als ik kijk naar de bezoekers aantallen van de Global
Groove, zien we de VS op één en Colombia op twee. Ik denk dat het
met taal te maken heeft. Niet zoveel Spaanstaligen laten reacties
achter, wellicht omdat ik alleen in Engels en Nederlands schrijf.
Mijn Spaans is helaas niet toereikend, en waarschijnlijk het Engels
van Spaanstaligen ook niet. Hoe dan ook, het is gerechtigheid als
eerst volgende post een Colombiaanse te doen. Dit is een plaatje
van één van Colombia’s grootsten. Calixto Ochoa verdient wel wat
meer aandacht. Met slechts vijf albums op de site en een grote
stapel op de plank werd het wel weer eens tijd. Calixto brengt
dit album met zanger Luis Cuadros.

A short time back we already had that marvelous Panamenian
record with Kike Subia. The same day I found that one I also
stumbled upon this one, and in the same Amsterdam store.
Another great find from Panama but this time with Calypso.
Twelve nice songs by five different artists. I hope there will
be no censoring in the USA for there is a
nipple on the frontsleeve..

Kort geleden hadden we reeds die fijne Panamese plaat met
Kike Subia. Op dezelfde dag dat ik die vond, liep ik ook tegen
deze aan, in diezelfde Amsterdamse winkel, wat een mazzel.
Nog zo’n leuke Panamese elpee maar dit keer met Calypso.
Twaalf toffe songs door vijf verschillende artiesten. Ik hoop
dat hij door de censuur komt in de USA want
er is een tepel in beeld..

I didn’t use it for years but after re-installing the old tape-deck
to record Musica Angola, I dived into the archives for some old
tapes. Here’s another one I found back. A tribute to Marco, or
Marc Samb, the trumpeteer who found his untimely death in
an accident. The Super Etoile sounds wonderful on this 1983
release. Great vocals and instrumentation..

Na jaren in de kast te hebben gestaan heb ik deze week m’n
oude tape-deck weer eens geïnstalleerd om die Musica Angola
tape te kunnen digitaliseren. Nu vond ik nog wat oude tapes
waaronder deze. Een ode aan de in een ongeluk gestorven
trompettist Marco, ofwel Marc Samb. De Super Etoile klinkt
geweldig op deze uitgave uit 1983. Pracht vokalen etc..
