Late post tonight, I blew a recording earlier and had to start
all over. What have we got ? This is an album by one of the
greatest juju masters. Sir Shina Peters and Segun Adewale made
their name with the band of Prince Adekunle but reached much
bigger public than their teacher did. Although less known world-
wide, Prince Adekunle’s music belongs to Nigeria’s very best.
Most pages state this LP is from 1975 but this label clearly says ’76.tracks;

This is a classic album by a group that even Bob Marley had
great admiration for. Justin Hines and the Dominoes made this
’76 album with the Black Disciples, the same group, Winston
Rodney alias Burning Spear made some records with in the same
period. Have you seen the movie ‘Rockers’? It ends with the song,
this LP opens with. What a splendid film, starring some of the
greatest reggae artists as themselves. Gregory Isaacs, Robbie
Shakespeare, Dillinger, Burning Spear and Jacob Miller among others.
I found this fantastic scene at Youtube in which we see Leroy
‘Horsemouth’ Wallace, the famous drummer with Richard ‘Dirty Harry’
Hall entering a typical disco discotheque, check out what happens.
Classic scene from a classic movie you really must have seen.
This one’s for you Gonzalez.tracks;

In 1985 we had this pleasant surprise. I never thought I would
appreciate this type of music before it. ‘Lost in the Stars’ is
the name of this project in which many famous artists do an
interpretation of a Kurt Weill song. Something different for a
change. I used to spin it quite a lot in those days. We’ll round
up this year, posting a mixture of styles, for now, enjoy this.tracks;
1 Steve Weisberg – Mahagonny Songspiel
2 Sting and Dominic Muldowney – The Ballad of Mack the Knife
3 The Fowler Brothers with Stanard Ridgway – The cannon song
4 Marianne Faithful and Chris Spedding – Ballad of the soldiers wife
5 Van Dyke Parks – Johnny Johnson medley
6 Ralph Shuckett & co. – Alabama song
7 Armadillo String Quartet – Youkali tango
8 John Zorn – Der kleine leutnant des lieben gottes
9 Lou Reed – September song
10 Carla Bley with Phil Woods – Lost in the stars
11 Tom Waits – What keeps mankind alive ?
12 Dagmar Krause – Surabaya Johnny
13 Johnny Adams & Aaron Neville – Oh heavenly salvation
14 Todd Rundgren & Gary Windo – Call from the grave
15 Charlie Haden & Sharon Freeman – Speak low
16 Van Dyke Parks – In no man’s landPosted by Moosat 9:23 PMCategories

…and now for something competely different…
Somehow, when we come to this time of the year, I start to
play old stuff like this one by Al Bowlly. It makes me think
of the Dennis Potter TV series; ‘The Singing Detective’ ? I always
loved it, it is filled with this type of sound and plays back in
the days. Most of these tracks were taken from movies from the
30’s and accompanied by ‘Ray Noble and his Orchestra’ and the
‘Savoy Hotel Orpheans’. It’s the music my parents danced to
when they were dating. Great nostalgic atmosphere.tracks;
1 All I do is dream of you
2 Guilty
3 Stay on the right side of the road
4 Sweet and lovely
5 Did you ever see a dream walking ?
6 Twentieth century blues
7 When my little Pomeranian met your little Pekenese
8 Hold my hand
9 Pettin’ in the park
10 Wanderer
11 Hang out the stars in Indiana
12 Here lies love
13 Brighter than the sun

I could not resist posting another album today. This one by the
African All Stars is without Sam Mangwana but with a couple of other
greats. Dizzy Mandjeku, Lokassa ya Mbongo, Kanta Nyboma and on drums
K. Moya Lotula Ringo. What a great band this is, better do not miss !
Made for the Nigerian Albarika Stores label.tracks;
