- Sunday October 4, 20094 comments on Sam Mangwana et l’African All Stars, Celluloid 1982
Sam Mangwana started out in the early 1960’s with Vox Africa and
Festival des Marquisards before joining Tabu Ley’s Afrisa. In 1972
he switched to OK Jazz for three productive years before returning
to Afrisa. Eventually he set up a splinter group in West Africa called
African All Stars, with whom he developed a pan-African sound with pop
and Caribbean rhythmic undertones, which has been the basic for a
successful globe-trotting solo career.

About a year ago I found a bunch of Mecican 10″es on the Utrecht
bi-annual recordfair. The next one is in november and I’m already
waiting for it. Trio Tariacuri is a group I didn’t know before,
they play mariachi like we used to hear it in them old Mexican movies.
I particularly like this little album for it’s atmosphere, ooooy ooooy.tracks;

For the past few days I’ve been working a lot and didn’t find the
time to make a post. Today I do but can’t decide what album to pick.
Since the GG is still some 4 months behind with it’s Samplers, it
seemed logical to use this moment to make the next one.
This Sampler covers posts made in the month of May. Hope U like it.tracks;

Good afternoon groovers worldwide, summer is now really coming to an
end in the Netherlands. It was long and sunny but autumn is breaking
through. To keep that warm feeling, we learned a couple of tricks like
playing tropical musictypes. Today’s choice is an album by Nigerian hero,
Oliver de Coque. One of the last ones to make old fashioned Nigerian Highlife.
On his covers he used to appear dressed quite extravagant but on this one
he and his wife keep it simply white. If you want it, do not hesitate.
Rapidshare is going to change some rules in october. Files that are not
downloaded for 90 days will disappear in the future. Better take a good
look around here at the GG. I am not sure yet how I’m gonna solve this
new little problem so please tell your friends to come visit us and keep
our files alive by sucking them in. Enjoy.tracks;

Remember Mama Cathy ? This the second LP by David ‘Féfé’ Diambouana
on Eddy’Son and on this page. What do you think ? Is that nice high
voice we hear, Théo Blaise Kounkou ? I am only sure for 90%.
The backsleeve tells us nothing about vocals. The albums made on the
Eddy’Son label always sound so natural, like it’s just a bunch of
friends playing with their instruments on a sunday afternoon.
Great relaxed atmosphere, get it while you can.tracks;

Although this cover looks very vague and worn out, we got us a real
nice gem here. The more I regret to tell you, track number 2 opens with
a disturbing hiss. I washed it several times and it looks clean but still.
Class A Highlife nevertheless, you wouldn’t want to miss.tracks;

Last sunday was an all Congolese day, this sunday will be all Nigerian.

but it seems the list of LP’s he made is endless. This is another one from
1987. Again all tracks are melted together as one, hope U like.tracks;

Rounder Records is a label that stands high on my list of favourites.
They use to release lots of historic music, I became a follower after
finding a load of old Calypso on it. This album contains tracks from the
late 30’s (they sound like that too) untill mid 60’s. The roots of juju
do not sound like the juju we know today but you can hear some basic links.tracks;

A little samba on fridaynight can’t hurt. Here’s another OKeh release
from the early 70’s. Again the artistic direction was in the hands of
Zuzuca. He took care of the vocals on track 3, 8 and 10 himself,
Baianinho on track 1. Contains some great dance tracks.tracks;
